This is an experience...dining at la Basque! We enjoyed the meal and found out we really don't
like tongue...not because of the tastes..just the idea of it...oh well! But, the lamb chops were tender and really flavorful, the soup delicious. You should try it!
We have dined at this restaurant a number of times. Unfortunately, it appears a bit tired and that perhaps the attention to detail isn't what it once was. The food quality was only so-so. The wait staff was pleasant, though the person checking folks in seemed to have had a bad day. I suspect we will all continue to frequent this restaurant out of respect to its rich history in Reno, but as other restaurant locations become available, I suspect this option will be less and less.
We went on a Sunday night at 8pm. It was dead quiet. But the food and service was great. Looking forward to going back and seeing what it is like when it's packed with customers. Long communal table seating which is fun to chat and meet new people. Would be a completely different experience on a busy night.
Louis is fantastic Basque food served family style. It's a classic and and fun every time. The steaks are done superbly and the Basque dishes are delicious, the French fries are to die for. Our kids ask to go to Louis whenever we can...yummy
When we arrived we were informed that Louie's Basque Corner was no longer with Open Table and they did not have our reservation
I was disappointed overall with this trip to Louis' Basque Corner. The salad was not good, just too much oil and vinegar dressing and it could use a few more ingrediants. The soup tasted more like they had combined two soups together and it was suppose to be beef barley, but it hardly had a piece of beef in it. We ordered the sweetbreads, because we can hardly find them anywhere else, but they tasted like chunks of beef that were overcooked. Sweetbreads are delicate and their preparation is a lot of steps. It tasted like they skipped a couple. The beans were basically tasteless, as we added alot of other table sauces and salt to give them some flavor. The best thing on the table was the chicken dish that came with the dinner. Nice and tender, even the white meat. Lastly, the bread was absolutely tasteless...please find a better source for that!
The first time I ate here was with my parents in the 1950's. Every time since that I have visited Reno I have made an effort to eat here because of the delicious dinners, the variety of offerings, the opportunity to visit with folks from all over and the great ambiance. I don't think you can find another place offering such a variety of Basque entrées, offering seconds if you want them (I can't imagine taking seconds since there's such ample servings to begin with - we couldn't even finish those). Try the beef tongue served with typical Basque-style with tomatoes, onions and bell peppers. I love the leg of lamb and especially the huge lamb chops. And you won't find better French fries anywhere.
This is a fun place to go with a group (with folks ordering different entrées so that you can share). Don't forget that a sizable glass of wine is included as is "dessert" (vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce or some very dry but great jack cheese). You simply can't find a better deal: soup, wonderful green salad, first course (changes often - in our case it was the beef tongue), great beans with Spanish chorizo (nothing like Mexican chorizo), main course-several listed on menu PLUS daily specials (prime rib, salmon, shrimp, and oxtails the 2 days we were there), dessert (see above) and wine. Try their special cocktail - Picon punch for $5 ($4 during "happy hour"). I can't wait to get back to Reno.
We had Prime Rib which is a special on Fridays. Was excellent.
We had a group of 18 to 20 and we all had a great time. We finally moved into the dining room so we could talk. It gets way too loud at the bar.
We did think the pecan punches were a little light with the liquor.
If you like Basque family style dining and Sweetbreads you will love this place. Low key and informal but good hearty and generous portions.
Holiday dinner with family
We chose to come here for an office Christmas lunch. It was a different choice than we normally have, but was a huge hit. Everyone really had a fun time and the family style helped it seem more like a group conversation. Service was excellent.
Best Top sirloin I've ever had, better than a Filet. A little noisy, but that's the style ( a lot of people having fun). Great food, enough leftovers for lunch the next day
Entrees are kind of unnecessary, you can fill up on all the good family style eats first. Our table ordered five different entrees and I think the consensus was the beef tongue was the best. Loud parties going on in both rooms but that's what happens there!
A very typical basque restaraunt with group seating. We enjoyed our meal and our table mates were great but it is not the place to go if you need to discuss personal matters. The lamb chop was cooked just right and very tasty. Crisp fries and a good salad. The soup average. All in all a fun experience with good food but nothing extra ordinary.
As always, it was a pleasant experience with great food and excellent ambience Well worth the money!!
I have been going to Louis for over twenty years and have never been disappointed. I am friends with Luis, Frank and Debi.
Took my kids here (4) for my oldest daughters 21st brithday. We had a reservation and showed up early. Had to wait for our exact res time, even though it was 80% empty. When they did seat us at a family style table of eight, in an empty back room next to the swinging kitchen doors that kept hitting the back of my sons chair throughout the meal. They wouldn't even let us move over to the other end of the table that was empty the entire time we were there. Food was adequate, but plentiful. Wait staff was good, but the busser was excellent. Will only return to visit the bar!
We dine here often. This is one of the few old time Reno restaurants left.
Very good Basque style food with large portions. The sweetbreads and anything lamb are must haves ! Very good bar with reasonable prices. Reservations a must on weekends.
All food was very good with the exception of the entrees. The beef ones were badly burned and overdone in the flame. The lamb roast had lots of fat.
I had forgotten about the Basque tradition of being served family style and eating with people you have never met. Even though that is not what we were expecting our dinner was amazing. I had a NY Strip Steak that was cooked perfectly, and much more then the I could ever eat. My friend had Sweet Breads, something I have never tried but I now might order for myself. The wait staff was wonderful, and helpful. We will definantly go again!
We've been dining at Louie's since the mid 70s. Seen it under go an ownership change as well as an interior redesign. Food is always consistent and very good. One of the best traditional Basque dinner houses in the area. Be prepared for a great meal and a possible wait even with reservations. If you go try a Picon to get the evening of to a good start.

Louis' is an old tradition in downtown Reno, just a few blocks from some of the major casinos. The seating is at long tables and are seated with people who have just recently come into the restaurant whom you likely do not know. But, you get to know them quickly. What a nice experience, becoming acquainted over some of the best home-cooked comfort food around. It is traditional Basque food, the style brought with the Basque people settling in the Reno area from the Basque region of Spain and Portugal, I believe. Just a great overall experience.
We were moved from the family dining area to the bar area because we wanted to order sandwiches and salads. We were served bread without having ordered it and then told we would have to pay for it. We had to ask for silverware and napkins and were given four place settings for five people. After 45 minutes, our sandwiches had still not been started. The resturaunt was not half full. We were told we could leave or wait and get our food half price. When we got our bill, only about 15% had been taken off. We asked why and the waitress said her manager had told her to do it. We asked to speak to him and she said he wasn't available. She eventually gave us the discount.
Great food - big portions - good service! We enjoyed it very much and will certainly go back. The prime rib special was exceptional!
Food was great. Good variety and delicious. More than we could handle. Really enjoyed meeting the people seated next to us (this is family style dining). Almost did not want to leave at end of dinner. This is not a fancy upscale restaurant, and the location is a bit rough....but food was great. Highly recommend.
I like that when you come as a couple, and sit at a table with other people, you make new friends. The food is good and the sharing makes it fun.
We've been to Basque restaurants in Europe, East Coast of the U.S., Morgan Hill and San Francisco in California and a number of other locations. The food tasted good and it was served family style, but fell short on the entree selections. Other Basque restaurants also give a bottle of wine not just a glass of wine with dinner.
We were in Reno and was looking for a place to eat that wasn't a casino. We enjoyed ourselves very much. I thought the prices were on the high side.
