Lotus Thai is a Thai restaurant in San Diego that has been repeatedly voted the best Thai in the city by several media outlets. As soon as diners set foot through the doors, they are greeted with the gentle sound of Lotus Thai's indoor waterfalls. This, paired with its stone Buddha statues and beautiful flora create a peaceful, relaxing ambiance in which to dine.
Lotus Thai's menu is full of classic dishes of Thailand, bringing in the signature spice and flavors of the region. It also has several takes on Chinese dishes that will be familiar to most American diners. While spicy and flavorful chicken and beef are found throughout the menu, there is also a large selection of vegetarian options, making this an ideal place for those that prefer a meatless diet.
Food was disappointing. We were a party of 6 and mistake on one order. Correct order did not arrive until everyone else wasfinished eating. No apology, no offer to adjust bill. Would definitely not return
The food was excellent throughout. We started with the veggie dumplings. For main course, we ordered Panang curry with Tofu, Drunken noodles, Spicy Eggplant, Red Curry with Tofu, and Spicy fried rice. Red curry was spicy even for our spicy palette but every thing else was tasty. Service was also bery good. Overall a memorable experience.
Traveling in San Diego when I found this gem. A half hour walk from my hotel was worth the effort. Green curry was tasty, well-seasoned and good portion size. Will definitely return on my next trip.
The restaurant is nice in a convenient location if you are visiting and staying close to the convention center. It took a while for them to get my order. The food was ok. A little on the bland side to me in comparison to other Thai restaurants I have been to. I ordered the fried banana w/ ice cream dessert and it took a while to come out. When it finally came out the ice cream was half melted and it was not that good. Nice staff, but I would not go back if I were back in town.
Excellent Thai food. Served unique dishes plus the standard Thai foods. Appetizers were especially unique. Portions were large and service was excellent.
Excellent service as always from Alex. They are happy to find gluten free alternatives.
Cheap dinner dishes and lovely restaurant
Green shrimp curry, cashew nut with pork (bit into chile, suffered intensely), red shrimp curry, and Pad Thai (a bit greasy on the egg).
Very tasty, good service, manager was kind and responsive to turn down thumping beat which disturbed dining comfort, and substitute more gentle music.
Our food was delicious, however the service was very slow. My husband was not acknowledged when he sat down, he waited 20 minutes to get a drink. It took even longer to get our order in. It was not too crowded, however, the waiters did not know who was taking care of our table!
The portion sizes were great. The mango sticky rice is awesome...sweet but salty...warm rice with cold mango, it's delightful. They were playing Sirius BPM club type music, but it wasn't loud creating a hip fun atmosphere. Dining outside only for small groups...dining inside is romantic with more ambiance. Overall great!
We had good food but the service was super slow tonight. We waited 30 minutes just to place an order. The table next too us left after waiting 45 mins for 2 beers.
The place was nothing special, it was medium sized and the food wasn't anything extraordinary. However, the Thai vibe in the place and the lighting made it much better. Because it is a smaller place, the service is better. Overall I was satisfied, so was the prom group I went along with
Thoroughly enjoyable dining experience for a family & friend celebration in the heart of the Gas Lamp district, San Diego. Wait staff was attentive and accommodating to us in every aspect by providing us a semi - private dining section for a leisurely dining experience. Every dish more more delicious than the last. We sampled the appetizer platter, fire chicken, duck stir fry, eggplant with pork, pork with pineapple, and a variety of vegetable dishes and rices.
Had to have a quick lunch - ordered off the lunch menu so we were in and out in less than a half hour.
Wandered in from out of town (2x now). Made reservations through Open Table both times but wait staff didn't take my name to make sure they confirmed we were there. That said, the food was good and prices terrific. We went back the second time specifically for the lemongrassitini, but they couldn't accommodate us. Wait staff suggested the ginger cosmo and it was a good alternative. The soup with noodles was awesome, fish with lime pesto terrific. They really do a nice job with sauces and the happy hour deals can't be beat!
Food is good and reliable.
Kinda nice they have some dimsum on the menu as well.
Service attentive.
At lunch the folks don't chase us out if we want to talk or work a bit.
I have to walk further to get to this restaurant than other Thai around downtown, but worth the walk.
start with Tom Kah...must have for the table...good for up to 4 people. I like the seafood mix but shrimp or chicken works as well. Other appetizers are also good so don't skimp. Been several times and the only dish i wasn't "wowed" about was the sea-bass they they pitch. Not sure if was just a one off...but the claim is this is a signature dish. I may try again just to see.
Absolutely horrible service. The food was good but the clumsiness and carelessness in their service was completely uncharacteristic of any Thai restaurant I have to.
Three adults ate at Lotus Thai on a Sunday evning and encountered the worse service eperience.
Intial drinks took 20 min to find our table, first apology, apps arrived on time, attempt to deliver another table apps to our table, entree took 1 hr to find our table with an apology, asked twice for seasoning sauce, 2nd set of drinks came with bill at end of our meal with apology.
Food much better than service and hope Lotus Thai realizes there are too many choices in San Diego to eat if they do not improve their service.
Outstanding service! Very friendly! Happy hour menu was phenomenal, great prices! Food was delightful!!! One of my fav Thai restaurants!
Alex the waiter was great at doing his job, he sat in down and went over the drink menu with us and explained what was avaikbe. Then moved on to the food menu and had a lot of knowledge about the food on the menu and explained us all the different dishes. He was very attentive to us and what ever we needed, he did a great job at waiting and I will definitely be coMing back to eat again.
I tried the Lotus Sampler Platter that had a variety of appetizers and dipping sauces. It was all really good. The peanut sauce for the satay was great (doesn't taste like watered down peanut butter). Most of the items on the platter can purchases during the daily happy hour for about $5. Also had the shrimp stir fry. The portion wasn't huge, but the prices are reasonable.
Our waiter was friendly and attentive.
Had a great time, loved the pumpkin autumn themed curry, very excellent!!
The pad Thai was awesome so was the pad se ew. Excellent sparking pear sake and service! Can't wait to go back!!
Decided to make reservations here for the night of the Paul McCartney concert. Turns out this restaurant was NOT prepared. Show up and was told they were not honoring any reservations made for tonight because they didn't prepare for such a rush. No apology just told it would be a 30 minute wait. Why not at least call that you are not honoring your reservations?!
Had reservations at lotus before the Paul McCartney concert. Clearly they didn't know about the concert as they were very understaffed. 2 in our party had to leave because it had been over an hour and still no food. Wait staff instead of taking our dirty dishes, added dirty dishes from another table on to our table and left them! Lots of others waiting past their reservation and still no table. People were not getting their food or bills so tables were not turning over. Food was fine so they might be an OK place to go if nothing is going on downtown.
Server turned on the charm early then disappeared. It wasn't busy. Food runner brought the main course for my two friends. Didn't bring my food. Server never checked back. My friends ate their whole meal (slowly) before they had to walk up to the service staff and tell them my food never came. They comped my main course (which was nice), and the food was amazing, but "boooooo" from this former seasoned server.
Great food! Try everything on the menu, there are some real gems. The fried rice is amazing and any leftovers are great with eggs the next morning. I'm a real fan of their curries as well. And for those who like it spicy, they aren't afraid to bump up the heat when you ask for "Thai spicy".
Spent the day at Safari Park and was very tired and hungry. Parking on a game night is horrific! Took 20-minutes and $10. Ignored for 40+ minutes, after being seated. By then few tables remained, watched as waiter cleaned and mopped, asked hostess to help us, another 10+ minutes passed, waiter finally took our order, got another waiter to help us after waiting again for about 40+ minutes for our appetizer, were told there was a mistake with our order. We believe it was never turned in. If the food was not SO good here, we would have just left. It was 10:45PM or later when we were finally able to leave. The food was awesome as usual. This all started at 8:00PM. Ridiculous!
Food was good as always. Noise level was very high and it was difficult to talk across our table for 4. Waiter messed up our order. Brought 3 of 4 dishes and we finally got the right 4th dish much later. Not a terrible thing, but disappointing.
Came with a group of 20. Everyone was very happy with the food, drinks and service
Delicious food and wonderful service. I think what I chose to eat did not settlt well with me as I had intestinal problems the next day.
After travelling around the US eating some pretty mediocre Thai (we prefer healthier options over some of the calorie rich American food) - we finally found a place that knows spice and chilli. We asked the waiter to make a beef salad authentic Thai - and that is what we got- super spicy and full of flavour. Thank you - and the wine and beer was great value too.
Best thai food downtown and the ambiance and service is spectacular! Real authentic thai cuisine with exceptional chefs cooking right in an open kitchen:)
What a great find. This restaurant is just a block or so outside of the core of the Gaslamp but well worth the extra block. Food was excellent. Our server was so kind, professional and genuinely interested in helping us have a wonderful meal. Ask for Alejandro-he was terrific.
Excellent food, fresh ingredients, good service. I came with my family and everyone was happy with their meal. I appreciate the availability of vegetarian items, including the Tom Kha soup that came with lunch.
Was on vacation and the wife and I wanted some thai food. Heard good things about this place and tried it out. Food was great! She had beef pad see ew and I had the red curry with chicken. We were both very happy with out dishes. We would go back if we are in town again.
I planned a special dinner for my daughter, myself, and five of our dearest girl friends. When we arrived at Lotus Thai that Friday evening, our table was already set. We were seated on the far corner of the restaurant with the bench on one side and chairs on the other side of our table. I gave the waitress our orders and we were served drinks and the main dish in a timely manner, which was exactly what I had hoped. My daughter and I were able to share our gifts and presentation without interruption from servers. Then, dessert followed. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed our evening meal. In retrospect, we might've also enjoyed the table with all chairs and also have a better window view and try brunch for a quieter evening.
We had a reservation for 8:45 and sat by 9. We were taking our time ordering appetizers and drinking wine until our last friend came. Unfortunately, we felt rushed by our server. She wasn't very friendly and seemed to be in a hurry. I know we were one of the last tables but it's never nice to feel like you have to hurry up and that you are somehow an inconvenience. If there can't be good service at 10 pm then the restaurant should not take reservations past 8 pm. Hope this helps!!
Good value comes to mind. For example the squid in my Tom Yum soup was generous, large pieces, tender, and fresh. I was pleasantly surprised! The flavors of all the food were excellent. This place has done a great job making the atmosphere nice for a Thai restaurant too. I highly recommend it!
