Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I created a stop off here on the way from San Francisco to LA to come to this restaurant. It has always been one of our favorites and never disappoints. To me it seems like the perfect restaurant: consistently good food, somewhat ambitious but totally unpretentious; wonderfully efficient and friendly but unobtrusive service, fantastic and very reasonably priced wine list; very pleasant decor and style, pretty good value.
We sat outside to have a slightly more quiet, intimate evening and it was all we'd hoped for. The staff teamed up to bring us whatever we needed quickly and efficiently. We always come here for the unique and creative pizza selections. The crust is light and airy, consistently delicious. The Central Coast wine selection is off the charts and you can browse to your heart's content. They may be tired of any Sideways references but for us it reminds us a favorite film we can still enjoy over a bottle of Andrew Murray (any Andrew Murray!)
First we were running late for our reservation. We called he restaurant and the hostess was very accommodating and called us back to let us know it was not a problem.
My wife and I shared the beets and burrata salad. We also shared the pork chop from the specials and everything was delicious. The wine list is extensive and I highly recommend the bread.
Good service and friendly staff.
This was our first time at this restaurant and we will definitely be back. I had the ravioli which, upon request, they were able to lighten up for me. The pizza that we shared was also very good - it was the special of the day which was an Italian beef pizza with spicy sweet peppers. Wine list is very good and service was prompt and attentive without feeling rushed. There were a lot of families there the night we were there so it is also a kid friendly restaurant.
Great restaurant with good food options, and extensive wine list. Service was a bit slow with bringing bread, but I guess it was being baked! It ended up being a bit pricier for dinner, so probably would go there for lunch next time. Most of the meat/seafood dishes are over $30.
We had a dinner planned for a large party of 9 and unfortunately the room was very loud which was okay but then they completely forgot to put in one of our party's dinner orders! The dinners came slowly as it was, then half the table first, half the table multiple minutes later and then we realized one was still missing, they figured out they never put the order in, apologized but nearly 15 minutes later one of our party members still had no dinner, we ended up sharing because at this point the rest of us were nearly done and this was just ridiculous. We cancelled the order, but shockingly besides an apology and a free glass of wine the waiter and bus boy really seemed to care less a member of our party went without a meal. VERY disappointing.
Ambiance is nice, especially next to the fireplace. Wine selection is extraordinary, as one would expect for a restaurant that also sells wine in the tasting town of Los Olivos. The food, however, was a bit disappointing. It was fine, but not at the level one expects in the wine country. The rack of lamb special was strangely not that flavorful, and the rack had not been trimmed the way I expect, with the fat cap trimmed off. So it was fatty but still not that flavorful and frankly too big with 8 ribs in a single portion. The lamb shank was better, although the meat was a bit dry. The overall flavor was helped by a delicious sauce that had pomegranite and other nice earthy flavors. The suggested wine pairing was fine, but not as good as I had hoped for a wine merchant.
I would have rated this restaurant with 5 stars but for the fact that when we arrived they had no record of our Top Table booking. They then tried to push us into the rear of the building which had two very noisy parties. The rear is drab and is nothing to do with the main dining area. If booking, avoid it at all cost. When I enquired about an empty table I could see in the main dining room we were told that was for six people and we were only five. I refused the noisy table to the rear and at that point rather than lose our business they offered the table just refused to us a minute before. We felt angered and humiliated by their poor behavior. After that things improved. The wines were well priced, the food very good and we had no further complaints. To avoid our experience you should call the restaurant to check they have your booking and not rely upon confirmations and reminders from Top Table.
This is the second time the I have eaten here recently. I used to love this restaurant, but after two times recently I will not be going back. The food is mediocre at best. Over priced and not great wait staff. The pizza is absolutely underwhelming. We had them pack up our leftover and to make matters worse they did not give us a pizza box and just stacked the pizza in a to go container. Save your time and your money. There are plenty of other really great restaurants out there. If you want wine, it is perfect, forget about the food.
Stopped by on the recommendation of a local wine merchant. The food was good - service was a tad inattentive, but wife had the Sopressata Pizza, which was excellent, as was the Turkey Burger. After lunch, we did the wine tasting, which was OUTSTANDING. Prices were reasonable.
We were really looking forward to dining there for the first time. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the hostess, who was not friendly at all and a bit rude about our table request. Really set a bad mood for dinner. I contacted the restaurant afterwards and spoke with the accountant who said she was going to have the manager contact me. Didn't get a call from the manager which was disappointing.
Amazing food and service! The list of local wines is very diverse and the merchant manager was very helpful recommending wineries according to our preference.
We always enjoy our time in this beautiful local restaurant.
Our friends had a great first time experience and they will be back.
This is a very cozy restaurant, but with a touch of elegance. Entering, you pass by a wall of wines that stretches an almost intimidating length. But separately to the right is the restaurant, a room that, by contrast, feels almost intimate. The gas fireplace, which was lit this night, adds to how comfortable you soon begin to feel.
The food was quite good, but the kitchen perhaps tries too hard to be creative. I began with a squash caprese salad. The slices of cooked squash, replacing tomatoes, were good in and of themselves, but, of course, they were hot. They warmed the mozzarella, changing its taste and consistency somewhat. It was still a good dish, just a bit odd.
The main course was a soppressata pizza, generous in size. It was tasty.
I was most impressed by the friendly, attentive service. My waitress, perceiving that I was perhaps no great lover of the squash caprese, offered to bring me the soup (about which I had asked her in deciding what to have). While I did no avail myself of her offer, I appreciated it.
I would certainly dine here again were I to pass near Los Olivos.
What a lovely restaurant. The service was prompt and friendly. We started with the cheese plate and it was beautifully presented. The house made fig jam was exceptionally good. We ordered the salmon and farro and the gnocchi for main courses. Both were very good with interesting touches. Highly recommend!
We have been here previously, and this time was somewhat disappointed. We were at end of one server's shift and we were uncomfortable with his attitude. We needed to ask for bread and he wasn't around much to check on our order. His replacement was much better.
We sat at a table near the bar area and the TV was on the Dodger's game, while exciting was not what we wanted to hear especially spending over $100 for dinner and trying to celebrate a birthday.
The Gnocchi was very tasty and my husband had the chicken sausage which was very tender with a lot of Garlic which we like. The Appetizer Arancini di riso was fabulous! and the wine the Bernat "Intrigue" 2010 was one of the best red wines I have tasted in a long time, mostly because I myself don't like red wine, but this was very tasty. If your in Los Olivas this is a must.
We took out-of-town guests here for lunch as it is one of our favorite spots when in Los Olivos. Food is very good- service was great even though they were extremely busy. Had a couple hiccups that our server fixed right away so we are very happy folks as things happend that the server cannot control.
Wait staff is very friendly and attentive. As a VERY long term resident/local, it is one of our ''go to places'' where quality is consistent and local wines are available. Some ''side by side'' seating in a somewhat European style, but also individual tables and nice bar seating. Prices are reasonable and competitive.....if not moderate ......considering our small town has been adopting LA prices at a rapid rate.
