We had a good meal. The problem was that it took an exceptionally long time to get our food. We don't know why. The restaurant wasn't packed when we got there, and it was almost empty by the time we left, so we don't think that the delay was due to the kitchen being overtaxed The waitress was knowledgeable but offered no explanation for why it took over 50 minutes from the time we were seated until we got our entrees.
Serious classical culinary skills (a nod toward French cuisine in particular) mated with a delightful sense of whimsy. Rainbow Spoonalicious, for example: lemon bars that were better than any lemon bars I've ever eaten, with a healthy dollop of creme chantilly and a scoop of gelato, plus some berries and some sparky sprinkles. A tarte tatin with fennel in addition to the apples. Beef Swellington (a deconstructed beef Wellington that was to die for.) A treat for the senses in every possible way.
Exceptional experience, as always!
We make reservations quarterly because we love this place it’s something to truly look forward to
Great staff, host, and SUSAN Worsham provides the most illustrious description of each course, beverage, and even the water! Love her and the whole experience. xx
My husband and I went here for the first time for a Friday date night, and the experience was amazing! From the moment we walked through the front door, we knew this was going to be a great experience. The host was super friendly, fun, and welcoming. The ambiance of the space was fantastic! It was beautifully well lit, and lots of interesting decor and quirky art adorned the walls. Our servers were also so nice and really knew the menu very well. I will admit that the place is expensive, but you DEFINITELY get what you pay for! This is not a place to be stingy; this is a special place with delicious food worth the extra money to have a special and DELICIOUS evening. We will absolutely be back again!
The atmosphere is fun and funky and the vibe is chill and slightly Bohemian. The menu is wittily written and varied—good for any type of diet... The service is professional and polite. The food is good and prepared well. But I wanted a bit more originality from the dishes. My chilled corn and crab soup was good but not a revelation. And the addition of cherry tomatoes and pepper oil created conflict with the delicate flavors of the crab and corn. My roasted chicken was expertly prepared—flavorful and tender. But the vegetable melange roasted with the chicken was just too much—in quantity and in variety. The dish reminded me more of a stew in the end. The chicken would have shone brighter on its own. I would absolutely return to try other dishes. The prices are reasonable and the food is tasty. But this is not the temple to innovative cuisine I was expecting.
Wonderful French American food experience with over- the-top decor along with kitschy music that somehow works. Service is on point and are quick to offer recommendations if stuck between 2 excellent choices or a wine pairing. Food is innovative and fun, foie gras bread pudding has ruined me for all other bread puddings. It is a must have!
It was everything we have heard and more. We have some fantastic servers in Richmond, L’Opossum takes it to another level!
Always wonderful. Our first choice in Richmond for great food, service and atmosphere. Delicious cocktails too.
Seldom do I find a restaurant live up to the reviews I've read but L'Opossum far exceeds the 5 stars it routinely gets. The food is INCREDIBLE -- the service is second to none and the decor is perfect for the experience. Simply stated -- GO -- go and enjoy a great evening of dining all the way around. Thanks for a memorable evening! We'll be back!
It's an OK restaurant - the food and everything is not as fantastic as expected. Tried this place as it was highly recommended by a colleague - had high expectation but nothing really impressed us much. Just didn't feel it was worth paying so much. Not bad food - just average.
Always amazing. Everytime.
Always amazing. My favorite place to dine
Just disappointed. We both had the famous escargot with ham and biscuit. Both arrived tepid at best, and we sent back. Very nicely, we were comped the appropriately hot replacements, but the taste was not as transpiring to us as others. I liked the ham and biscuit best. Although we placed all orders very quickly after arriving for our early 6 pm table, we did not receive our entrees until nearly 7:15. We kept looking at our watches. Though the place was full by that time, most had arrived between 6:30 and 7. I very much like my Beef “Swellington,” but my wife was less enamored with her Arctic char on white beans, feeling the chef simply was trying too hard to be creative. I must also add that we’d carefully studied the sample menu online. Fine, it was a sample, but a TIN of online reviews for well over a year mentioned the two dishes we’d planned on ordering: coq au Morocco, and Pork Belly with Scallops. We’d really thought they were menu staples but they weren’t on the menu or available. A restaurant of this supposed caliber should have its current menu online, period. Next time we’re in Richmond we’ll try another of their fine restaurants.
Fabulous service, a fabulous meal. Highly recommended.
Best meal in town. Everything about it was fantastic. The service, the drinks, the food, everything. Love this place.
As a first time patron of L'Opossum, I had heard all of the hype but wasn't sure what to expect. I had made the reservation months in advance as a dinner date for a second anniversary, and when the time finally came to sit down and eat, L'Opossum didn't disappoint.
As an appetizer, we ordered the Les Escargot a La Ham Biscuit. I'll admit, I'm not the biggest fan of escargot, however, this dish was amazing - the escargot really took a back seat to the ham biscuit and Sweet Garlic Beurre blanc.
For the main dish, we both got the filet mignon of beef "swellington". Perfectly cooked, flavor was on point, and the mushroom filled puff pastry on top was a great touch - overall an interesting way to change up spice up the classic beef wellington. My only gripe with the dish was that it could have used something of substance to go along with the steak - maybe a potato of sorts?
Dessert was the only real let down for me from this meal. None of the desserts on the menu really caught my attention, but I found myself ordering just to try something out. I decided on the apple and fennel pie, while my girlfriend chose what was essentially a chocolate cupcake with rum-infused ice cream. Neither were great, neither were bad, they were just alright, however, in the context of the overall meal, alright just didn't it.
Overall, between the food, the atmosphere, the decorum (as a star wars fan I enjoyed the star wars trinkets up on the walls), and the service (and despite the dessert), this was a great meal. Makes for a great anniversary date spot, and I'd 100% go again!
We love L’Opossum and have been several times. We often brag on the food AND the service, which we consider the best in RVA. We told our friends who hadn’t been before all about the level of service they could expect, and they were excited. Unfortunately, last night our server was S-L-O-W.
After being warmly greeted at the door, things went slowly (pun intended) down hill. We were not able to order drinks as we waited for our friends. When asked for a few more minutes to review the menu, we received 20. Cocktails for the four us took another 20. Overall, our night neared three hours...on a Thursday (school night!). Perhaps on a weekend night this wouldn’t have bothered us, as more time in this funky fun atmosphere is normally a great thing. Another party of four that arrived an hour after us was seated, ordered, ate (with dessert) and was out the door before us (different server).
We love L’Opossum and will be back, but three hours is a bit much and the lack of attention by our server was unusual (a first here). This rating is all about our service. The cocktails and food, once again, did not disappoint, nor did the apparent service received by the other diners in the restaurant.
My husband and I came to celebrate our Anniversary. Everything from the person welcoming you, the waitress knowledge and description of the menu and the wonderful eclectic music did not prepare us for the amazing culinary experience. The food/herbs/alcohol pairing was out of this world. We will be back. Loved it.
This was a special occasion and long awaited opportunity for us. The experience did not disappoint - server was the very best- timely, informed and gracious, food was simply outstanding. The only disappointment was the host who met and seated us - not a smile or welcome. Not a great start but the rest of the evening was special!
One of the top meals we have had! Best use of multiple flavors in each dish.
My appetizer (ham and escargot) and dessert (bread pudding) were phenomenal. My entree, the Beef Swellington, was a little under seasoned, but the cook was perfect. Very nice meal.
A Richmond culinary staple. Excellent food, one-of-a-kind ambiance. Not to be missed!
One of the finest restaurants in Richmond and certainly one of our favorites for a special occasion!
second time we are here and it was as good as first time. service excellent. food terrific. what more can I say
This was our second visit to L'opossum. We go out often and have been to all the top rated restaurants in the Richmond area. There is no question that L'Opossum is the best. We started with tasty cocktails, especially the Woodford with hot spice combination. There were three of us but we ordered five different appetizers, all of which ranked 11 out of 10. The rack of lamb was perfect and the foi gras with duck butter was spectacular on top of the perfectly cooked prime filet. Every plate was artistically presented. Very good wine selection that would meet anyone's price point. Service was highly professional and extremely helpful.
Great. Just great.
Definitely best restaurant in Richmond
Service was terrible. Food was so so. Overrated
This is a true gem in every way.
A dining experience that charms with the funky decor. The menu descriptions are clever and campy. The food is phenomenal: French flare with a southern influence.
Drinks equally artful and delicious.
L’Opposum is truly a special place to enjoy a meal.
Food sensational. Service excellent.Decor truly special!
Our Virginia favorite. Always wonderful food and service. Love the vibe and joie de vivre in this setting. Equally perfect for a chill dinner and quiet conversation or a festive night with friends.
Susan was an excellent waitress with detailed knowledge of each item. Food was excellent & only suggestions are a bit more light (I used my phone’s flashlight to read the dessert menu) & lower volume music.
We had a fantastic night with you. The server was top notch. The way he described the drink special and told us about it benefiting FeedMore was done like a poet. It was with such passion that my husband ordered the drink (he never order a mixed drink). The food is always an adventure in delicious fine dining. It is such a treat for us to be able to get a reservation at your amazing restaurant. We look forward to coming again soon!
My dinner at L’OPPOSSUM was one of the top five meals of my life! It’s a foodie’s dream menu.. I waited a long time to be able to dine here and it surpassed my expectations! Super friendly service topped off a stellar experience! ❤️💥💥
Food was amazing. Will, the bartender, was personable, and very creative. What a great time!
Anniversary dinner. Great all around experience
Would appreciate if music was a little less loud, but I did like the selection of music.
