Finally made it here after a few years living in RVA. It was my partners birthday, so needed something special and they delivered. The food and cocktails were delicious and our server explained a lot of things along the way. The decor is wonderfully weird.
Pretty sure this is my favorite restaurant in probably the whole WORLD
On my original visit, I was lucky and sat at the bar (small), as reservations usually need to be made well in advance.
I started with my usual Grey Goose up very dry martini with 3/olives(which could have been LARGER), and my partner had the bartender's special of the evening, both very good.
I started with a fig appetizer, and then had the filet of beef 'swellington', while my partner had vichyssoise soup with white asparagus followed by 2 large crab cakes. The Chef's presentation were amazing.
Extraordinary. The food, service, wine list and place. One of the best restaurants I’ve experienced. Can’t wait to return.
We love this place. It was amazing as always!!
Food and service were fantastic. Loved the quirky music, including an Algerian version of theme song from Shaft. Will definitely go back.
Magical taste experience: how to sum up the food: southern, French? all of the above? The chef has a dreamy, courageous palate with a beautiful presentation of perfect fish or meat or the pate and the desert *sigh* Just a lovely, mysterious, interesting place. Go there.
Excellent as always. Took some friends for their first time and they were blown away. Loved the special coccktail
Great restaurant, fun vibe, great food. Drinks were good, service was very good
Everything was over the top amazing! My wife had the Beef Swellingtion and I had the Scallops and Fat Back. Y’all need to read the menu to know what is it that makes them sooo good. They were both full of flavor. Best Restaurant in this part of the state by far.
I found the atmosphere at L'Opossum very eclectic. I loved the decorations on the walls and the people who patronize the restaurant. Most of all, the food was very delicious. I really enjoyed the appetizers and my entree. I look forward to coming again to try other dishes.
Food was not good and too expensive. Too bad. The previous time we were there, the food was great. Something has changed. Will be skipping this restaurant in the future until it improves.
My wife and I love exploring the ever expanding RVA restaurant scene but had still never been to L’Opossum, which has been raising the bar for several years. Too me, it was kind of like going to a cabaret of sorts, a feast for the eyes in a French Bordello sort of way( I’ve never been to one, but what I would imagine). Comfortable, cool lights hanging all over, dark walls and an eclectic huge assembly of over the top artwork and sculpture etc. She called it hipster, but I thought it was cool and very unique in the local landscape. Between that, the extremely clever menu and the solid music playing in the background, that alone set me up for a great experience. I could tell that someone even cared enough to create a very expansive set list with music from classical to alt country playing in the background. Noisy place, but still able to carry on a conversation at our table.
The menu is what I consider to be the perfect size, diverse but not overwhelming, much attention paid to execution and details and interesting cast of flavorful characters and mixups.
As I said, just reading the menu is an adventure. We had the French onion dip and grilled Caesar and our friends had the oysters rock. All were tasty and enjoyed. For entree,I had pork belly and scallops, which I would never think to put together but it worked well with some other unusual ingredients such as cranberry beans. My wife had the lobster Mac (swankbank) which was HUGE in portion and had a reasonable amount of lobster. She said it was ok but not awesome, and a little salty. Our friends had the chicken and Arctic char, which both were well thought out. I can’t do the menu description justice, I think it’s all on their website if this review intrigues you.
Service was great, very professional, attentive and unobtrusive. They all worked together as a team and everyone in the place working was happy to be there being hospitable. I recommend checking this place out, nothing else like it anywhere.
Delicious restaurant. Server wasn't very friendly, but the atmosphere and food made up for it.
The Best! You are not going to get better in Richmond!
Great food, great staff, great atmosphere. I could say great one hundred more times, but you get the point.
The place is GREAT!
Elegance, theatre, hedonism, generosity, deliciousness. If you dig all of those things at the same time, L'Opossum is for you. It certainly is for me.
Had a wonderful birthday dinner and won't wait until my next birthday to come back! So glad I finally experienced the incredible food and service that I heard L' Opossum is famous for and I was not disappointed!
This was without a doubt the best dining experience of my life . Everything was beyond perfect !
Outstanding food and service....will definitely go again!
The service, atmosphere and food were extraordinary!
Beautiful food and presentation. The cocktails were delicious. Service was professional and courteous.
The food and atmosphere were terrific. I would definitely recommend eating here.
One of the best dinners we’ve had in Richmond. Would reserve for a special occasion or exercise restraint in ordering as the charges quickly add up. Delicious food and the perfect level of attentive service.
It’s always wonderful dinner at L’Opossum!
Little too kitschy decor bit we liked the ambiance. Some of the dishes were outstanding, but didn’t feel it quite lived up to expectations. Waitress was top notch. Friendly, funny, and knowledgeable, but not overbearing. My steak was slightly over cooked and she immediate took back and had comp’d. We’d go back but not in a big rush.
Great place and the service is excellent. Our waiter was the best, very knowledgeable and attentive. However, I must say that the food was not up to their usual standard. While it was very good, it just wasn't great, and in the past it was always great. It might just have been an off night, so we'll definitely be going back to find out. That said, it's still a fun night out and the food is still very good.
Celebrating a birthday
Best restaurant in Richmond EVERY time!
Excellent food, great service, cool atmosphere. A little pricey but well worth it. My only complaint is how long we had to wait for a reservation. Two months for 6pm Saturday night
Amazing as always! The food and service are top notch!
Great food, great company. Always amazing at L’oppossum. Never disappoints!
Really excellent service and the food was worth the price - unique and delicious.
Was in Richmond for a conference and came here on the recommendation of a friend. Enjoyed every aspect of our evening. Loved the ambiance, the food was delectable, and our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu.
Food was wonderful. An atmosphere like no other.
Small, mostly cozy, artsy ambiance. Very pleasant greeting. Pleasant, courteous, professional service. Interesting, creative menu ...... grilled caesar! venison carpaccio! pork belly/grilled scallop! Large, diverse, very affordable wine list. A "must" place to stop when in Richmond.
A culinary experience -- outstanding food and decor
I loved the food, the decor and the music, once the music was adjusted to be a little less loud. I think for the upscale nature of the food etc, the servers could have been somewhat more attentive, checking back with us, for example. My napkin fell on the floor and it took a while for me to find someone , though the restaurant did not seem that busy. Maybe I am overly picky, but it seemed to me that the quality food and great decor should have been matched by really great service. Long ago I worked as a server in a fine restaurant and I was expected to be really on the ball, offering extra plates as needed (this did not happen here), replacing or offering additional napkins, attending to water, offering to pour from the wine bottle on the table if it seemed appropriate....an overall focus by me on any needs the customer might have...I did not have a sense of this at l'opposum, though i have in fact recommended it since we ate there. I liked the casual atmosphere, but the service need not be casual to be really first-rate. As I say, maybe it was an off-night, somehow.
My husband loved the sweet breads as well as his drink. My crab cakes were average and there wasn’t enough bernaise sauce, my drink was great. Their homemade bread was very good and the service was great. Everyone was very knowledgeable and friendly. We travel to France quite often, so I tend to compare their food to our attempt at French food which probably isn’t fair, because there is no comparison.
It was an amazing experience. From the food being delicious to the service being outstanding. Our server was very knowledgeable and did a great job at recommending orders to us. We ordered the drink special and a lovely French onion dip appetizer. When we ordered the entrees (beef swellington and the swank bank- both so good) she informed us of the special they were running which included fresh grated truffles done by a server wearing a crystal encrusted glove a la Michael Jackson. It was a very fun experience. We followed with dessert and since it was a birthday dinner, they brought out the dessert with a candle which was a delightful touch. Overall, L’Opposum continues to exceed our expectations.
