Elegance, theatre, hedonism, generosity, deliciousness. If you dig all of those things at the same time, L'Opossum is for you. It certainly is for me.
This was without a doubt the best dining experience of my life . Everything was beyond perfect !
Outstanding food and service....will definitely go again!
The service, atmosphere and food were extraordinary!
Beautiful food and presentation. The cocktails were delicious. Service was professional and courteous.
The food and atmosphere were terrific. I would definitely recommend eating here.
One of the best dinners we’ve had in Richmond. Would reserve for a special occasion or exercise restraint in ordering as the charges quickly add up. Delicious food and the perfect level of attentive service.
It’s always wonderful dinner at L’Opossum!
Little too kitschy decor bit we liked the ambiance. Some of the dishes were outstanding, but didn’t feel it quite lived up to expectations. Waitress was top notch. Friendly, funny, and knowledgeable, but not overbearing. My steak was slightly over cooked and she immediate took back and had comp’d. We’d go back but not in a big rush.
Great place and the service is excellent. Our waiter was the best, very knowledgeable and attentive. However, I must say that the food was not up to their usual standard. While it was very good, it just wasn't great, and in the past it was always great. It might just have been an off night, so we'll definitely be going back to find out. That said, it's still a fun night out and the food is still very good.
Celebrating a birthday
Best restaurant in Richmond EVERY time!
Excellent food, great service, cool atmosphere. A little pricey but well worth it. My only complaint is how long we had to wait for a reservation. Two months for 6pm Saturday night
Amazing as always! The food and service are top notch!
Great food, great company. Always amazing at L’oppossum. Never disappoints!
Really excellent service and the food was worth the price - unique and delicious.
Was in Richmond for a conference and came here on the recommendation of a friend. Enjoyed every aspect of our evening. Loved the ambiance, the food was delectable, and our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu.
Food was wonderful. An atmosphere like no other.
Small, mostly cozy, artsy ambiance. Very pleasant greeting. Pleasant, courteous, professional service. Interesting, creative menu ...... grilled caesar! venison carpaccio! pork belly/grilled scallop! Large, diverse, very affordable wine list. A "must" place to stop when in Richmond.
A culinary experience -- outstanding food and decor
I loved the food, the decor and the music, once the music was adjusted to be a little less loud. I think for the upscale nature of the food etc, the servers could have been somewhat more attentive, checking back with us, for example. My napkin fell on the floor and it took a while for me to find someone , though the restaurant did not seem that busy. Maybe I am overly picky, but it seemed to me that the quality food and great decor should have been matched by really great service. Long ago I worked as a server in a fine restaurant and I was expected to be really on the ball, offering extra plates as needed (this did not happen here), replacing or offering additional napkins, attending to water, offering to pour from the wine bottle on the table if it seemed appropriate....an overall focus by me on any needs the customer might have...I did not have a sense of this at l'opposum, though i have in fact recommended it since we ate there. I liked the casual atmosphere, but the service need not be casual to be really first-rate. As I say, maybe it was an off-night, somehow.
My husband loved the sweet breads as well as his drink. My crab cakes were average and there wasn’t enough bernaise sauce, my drink was great. Their homemade bread was very good and the service was great. Everyone was very knowledgeable and friendly. We travel to France quite often, so I tend to compare their food to our attempt at French food which probably isn’t fair, because there is no comparison.
It was an amazing experience. From the food being delicious to the service being outstanding. Our server was very knowledgeable and did a great job at recommending orders to us. We ordered the drink special and a lovely French onion dip appetizer. When we ordered the entrees (beef swellington and the swank bank- both so good) she informed us of the special they were running which included fresh grated truffles done by a server wearing a crystal encrusted glove a la Michael Jackson. It was a very fun experience. We followed with dessert and since it was a birthday dinner, they brought out the dessert with a candle which was a delightful touch. Overall, L’Opposum continues to exceed our expectations.
I recently had a business dinner at L’oppossum and it was amazing. I usually find something wrong with every restaurant but not this time.
Wonderful meal. Love the food, service, music, ambiance. A real artist in the kitchen
Everything was incredible. I've never had a meal so wonderful in my life. You can tell with every single bite you take that the chefs love what they do and have poured their heart into each and every dish.
Wonderful service in this quiet avant-garde atmosphere with delicious rustic cuisine! A must!
Amazing ambience, unmatched service, outstanding presentation and fabulous food. Best place in Richmond for a romantic evening and fine French cuisine. L’o is at the top of our list when we come back into town!
I.scheduled this for my 50th birthday. Why? It never disappoints. I’ve been there many times The service and food are always on point. The decor is kitchy but that’s part of the charm
We had the venison, escargot and pork belly and scallops. Everything was great. Escargot had the right amount of seasoning for our taste.
Always enjoy our dinners here. The food is absolutely delicious and the cocktails are fabulous.
Excellent food. Fun atmosphere. Waitress wasnt very pleasant
One of the more fun and delicious evenings. Highly recommend.
We "met with L'Opossum" in January 2015 : ), and since then had "many, many dates" with this absolutely unique place.
We "fell in LOVE" immediately, and almost were afraid to share our LOVE with the world, because we suspected it'd do us no good in ability to make reservations (which unfortunately for us proofed to be true on OT) . But how can you keep such a jem to yourself?!.. So, of course we've spread the word, and that is why:
When I (and my DH) am in there I feel like... "Alice in the Wonderland". Everything (from the ambiance, music, food, service, value) is unpredictable but in amazingly good way. I feel like for a couple of hours I was magically transferred into some ferry tale with a "happily lived after" ending.
My only regret that we have a long distance relationship with this restaurant because we are in Baltimore, MD and L'Opossum is in Richmond, VA. But on the other thought these rare dates (2-4 times a year) we have feel so much more cherished that you wish them go on "forever" : ).
Huge THANK YOU to the Chef and Owner David Shannon for creating this magical place, and to our absolutely wonderful, knowledgeable and very professional waitress Susan for making us feel this way.
Definitely the most romantic place for dining.
This was the best meal I’ve ever had I my life. I will never forget it.
Most consistent fine dining restaurant in Richmond. Not surprised by the James Beard nomination
Susan made an dining experience e ceptional with her knowledge and recommendations of menu
We have been trying to enjoy the L'Opossum experience for nearly 2 years. After a couple cancellations and missed opportunities we finally got in, and BOY did it live up to the hype! Absolutely did not disappoint! The food was absolutely amazing and so unique. the price of the meal was absolutely in line with the quality, drinks are a little on the expensive side, but not extreme.
We have eaten at many "high end" places and I cannot think of many that are as good. Amazing to have such high quality with the frequency in which they change the menu. Talent, Talent, Talent!!
The food is absolutely fabulous! A bit noisy and the service was not quite up to its usual standard, but not a better restaurant in Richmond.
