Honestly, I had heard great things about this restaurant, but they exceeded my expectations! This was honestly the best meal I've had in Richmond
Excellent from start to finish. The hostess greeted us warmly and took us to our table. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and answered all our questions. The specialty cocktail selection was interesting and varied. And the food… wonderful. The grilled Caesar thrilled my husband, and I had escargot a la ham biscuit. Hands down the best escargot preparation I’ve ever had. Plump escargot seasoned with a lovely sauce and bits of ham, and a delicate, flaky ham biscuit. Our entrees were well cooked and deliciously different. The star was the Beef Swellington - perfectly cooked filet in a wine sauce over root vegetables and onions, topped with a beggars purse with the duxelles and fois gras. My husband wanted to lick the plate. For dessert we split an apple tart with caramel creme fraiche. The tangy creme fraiche balanced out the sweetness of the tart perfectly. We also split a bottle of wine and liked the heavily-French wine list. This is a wonderful restaurant for a special occasion or splurge. W
This was a great dining experience! The food and service were fantastic.
WYSIWYG on the website. Short menu but excellent and unique options. Very enjoyable experience. We'll be back.
A copiously bountiful creative atelier where you have muse and autonomy to produce your delicious memory. Flow and relish in the experience.
We loved e eclectic dining room. It was a magical experience from start to finish!
The crab cakes and filet mignon were fantastic. The faberge egg app was very imaginative and fun. Our sever just seemed like she hated us which was a little off putting.
From the moment you walk in, you are transported to a different place and time where any stresses fall away. Lighting and music lead the way while flavors created in the larger than expected portions surprise and delight.
Terrific splurge restaurant. Love the quirky, European themed ambiance. Menu is spot on with great layered flavors.
We love L’Opossum. We had the deviled eggs with caviar and the escargot as appetizers. The escargot is always a go to for us when we visit, it’s the best! For the main course we ordered the lobster Mac n cheese and the beef swellington. I can’t say enough good things about our entrees. The Mac n cheese was a very healthy portion that required a to go box to bring the rest home and the beef swellington was cooked to perfection. The owner came over and personally greeted us and thanked for dining with them and the wait staff us incredible. Kuddos to the kitchen staff as well as the food was amazing.
I’ve dined at L’OPOSSUM several times, and brought two friends last night who have never been. The experience was sheer perfection, from the ease of reservations to the excellent service by Beth. The atmosphere, quality of food, music selections, and fresh flowers in the dining room window combined for a cosmic experience, right in Oregon Hill. L’OPOSSUM is simply a must!
Very quirky little restaurant in a very unassuming building in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Very eclectic decor makes it even more fun. It took quite a while to get a reservation at a decent dinner time, but we were so glad we did. We ordered the escargot and squash soup for appetizers, both were good. For our main, we had the filet and the crab cakes. Both were delicious. Steak was cooked perfectly and the crab cakes were almost nothing but crab. We did not order dessert - as we don’t drink, it would be nice if they offered a dessert that was not alcohol related. Service was excellent. Prices were about what you would expect for an upscale dining experience. Would definitely dine here again for a special occasion.
The only time we could get a table was at 5:30 PM about two months out. If that tells you anything, we were expecting a fabulous experience. The food was excellent! Service was excellent. Wide variety of music which was perfect! Not many choices but definitely all we ordered was outstanding!
Such a beautiful evening. They went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and comfortable.
Great food. A little of a French intrusion into the menu, which does not make it better, but it is just the flavor of the place. There is a nice mix of flavors in the spices. We can tell that each dish had been thought through, and not simply put together.
The dish selection is a limited, less than 10 entrées, which I think let the cuisine focus on each dish properly.
Worth every penny! Our waiter, Heather, was phenomenal!
Best restaurant in Richmond
Not what we expected before we got there. It appears to be a house turned into a restaurant located in a residential section of the city. Every course of the menu is very upscale however do not be intimidated as the server will break down every choice in great detail. These servers are the most knowledgeable and patient I have ever seen. My wife and I had the Beef "Swellington". The Filet was more than adequate in size and cooked to perfection. The vegetables were outstanding as well. Grilled and peppered with plenty of spices. My wife had the pineapple dessert and I had the chocolate dessert. Both were very different but excellent as well. We chose an Sonoma Cabernet which complimented the steaks quite well. Eclectic atmosphere with a wide variety of music playing though the speakers from ranging from current folksy traditional to Loretta Lynn!
Outstanding food. Probably one of the best restaurants in Richmond.
I didn't want to leave the booth. Everything was perfection and so full of flavorful surprises. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly without being over attentive. The music was expansive. I will not think about food the same way again. Go. And get the whole damn fish.
Awesome. Great food, cocktails, ambiance, art combined with top notch service.
L'opossum by far best fine dining in rva...cozy eclectic atmosphere, best background music and the cuisine and presentation is outstanding!
Have had many dinners there and it is so consistently wonderful, a real Richmond gem
The most joyful restorative within one hundred miles of Virginia’s Capital. If you know, you know, now go.
L'O delivers again with Will at the bar on a spectacular Friday sundown. A sophisticated sautéed Bronzino aka Mediterranean seabass triumphs in a début. Usually favoring shellfish, beef, fowl, and infrequently pork, I'm a novice at fin fish, but this dish offers the crème de la crème to grow the appetite. Served as the "whole damn fish," but you won't need a bigger boat as this delivers it all.
Savoring meaty, adeptly filleted filets of white tender, juicy, flaky fish with a clean, gently sweet taste. The filets are served over crispy, seared coconut rice that delivers a perfectly appealing consistency for the buttery fish. The most extraordinary fork-ready and delicious, whole fish I've ever gobbled.
Garnishes include Asian-inspired papaya salad and two subtle sauces to use as you choose. For les aficionados poisson à nageoires, the head, tail, and silvery skin are included for plucking and enjoying the robustly flavored meats, especially the trendy cheeks and collar. This fish dish offers it all and is essential order. Uncontrollably at the end of the meal, I exclaimed that this was the best damn fish I've ever had. Imagine that.
Awesome food and ambiance as usual.
The food, the cocktails, and the decor are an eclectic, rich, sophisticated combination of high and low….honestly just a lot of fun. If you are a twin peaks fan get the Laura Palmer cocktail.
Wine list very short and prohibitively expensive. Decent wine by the glass list.
Food was well prepared and very well presented. Much better experience than my last time here.
L'Opossum always hits it out of the park on every point - ambience, service, drinks, and food. I go out to eat a lot and I think it's the best restaurant in Richmond.
With Beth at the bar. The limited engagement heirloom tomato salad is marvelous, especially the velvety burrata that is mouthwateringly flavored. As an omnivore profoundly contorted carnivore, Hey, Smoke Up Johnny! will not "short" you on layers of savory taste, texture, and temperature. We only met once, but it changed our lives forever.
Decadent and delicious. We got the filet, which was in the top 5 steaks we’ve ever had. Perfectly tender with a lovely port reduction, and delightful accoutrements. Fave apps were the faberge egg and the peach/burrata/pesto salad.
Also highly recommend the limoncello creme brûlée!
We had the petite mort for a second dessert, which was decadent but actually too rich for our taste. Should have gotten a second creme brûlée instead.
Ambiance is romantic, dimly lit, with retro music, and David statues or homages (we counted at least 12) or other art everywhere you look.
This quirky, fun little restaurant is one of my favorites, and not just in Richmond. The staff has always been terrific, knowledgeable, responsive, proactive, and accommodating at every turn. The food has always been exceptional, and always changes. It is sometimes tough to get a table, and this last time, I booked about a month in advance, but well worth the effort to have dinner here. The location is a little isolated, as there are not many other options for drinks in the immediate area, but plenty of awesome drinks inside.
The service was great, the food was great and they had several vegan options for my boyfriend.
L’O always knocks it out of the park. Superior quality and creativity delivered by super cool, highly knowledgeable teammates.
Gazpacho is an ideal sweltering day reprieve, and L'O's preparation is quintessentially unlike any other we've ever devoured. A tantalizing array of fresh, crisp fruits with flavors persuaded by the sizzling summer sun, bathing with basil in a cool translucent ripe tomato water that is refreshingly piquant in a presentation as beautiful to the eyes as it is on the palate. As the vessel empties, we hunch closer and nearly surrender to picking it up and drinking the rest.
Experienced diners may instinctively pass over chicken on menus, but you should always study a chicken course at L'O. Examine the recent Euskal Herria region laudable preparation of skillfully pan-roasted young chicken embedded in an elaborate swath of colorful sweet peppers, little wrinkled potatoes, green olives, embracing spices and sauce that is undeniably delectable. Likewise, Filet of beef is bursting with juicy flavor, the absolute best steak. Reserve, anticipate, and go.
The most fun, whimsical and delightful experience.
I've heard a lot of good things about L'Opossum and have wanted to plan a special dinner for quite some time. Last night, my husband and I celebrated my birthday at this special venue. The whole experience was. . .amazing. The restaurant is rather unassuming from the outside. Then, as we entered the door and pulled open beautiful velvet curtains, we were enchanted by the ambiance. We were seated at a booth (which we love!) and sat quietly at first, taking in the soft lighting and the lovely music. Our waiter was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed an appetizer of escargot and one with eggs and caviar. Yum. As an entree, my husband enjoyed halibut while I had a decadent bowl of pasta with lobster. Oh my goodness. Amazing. Our dessert was an otherworldly combination of chocolate, ice cream and cream. We adore this special place and look forward to celebrating again soon. . .
