About Logan - An American Restaurant
LOGAN Restaurant opened in November 2004, with a commitment to providing Ann Arbor a unique and truly sensational dining experience. We are a small, independently owned and operated business. As such, we feel we can be attentive to the small details that separate great restaurants from the rest. For example, Chef-Owner Thad Gillies and his staff prepare from scratch each day the culinary components that are the base of everything we do. When they combine these elements for your dining pleasure, they transcend the French cooking techniques used to create them, in fact, they also transcend the many culinary traditions our kitchen draws from to create our “New American Cuisine”. Great food alone does not make a great dining experience, though; we feel that great wine, beer, and spirits are an essential part of that experience, as well. We are seek to offer you the very best of all of these we can obtain, always with a focus on excellent value.

We hadn't been to Logan for a while(You need to book ahead!) but finally snagged a table for my Birthday celebration. One of our hosts, Kevin, greeted us at the door with hugs and "Welcome Back!" We put ourselves in his good care for our wine and food pairing and as always he did not disappoint! Our meal was fabulous! The service was perfect, yet unobtrusive. The servings are perfectly portioned so that you can enjoy an appetizer, entree and even dessert if you wish without feeling overwhelmed. Looking around we felt happy to be back and lucky to get a table as it was a full house! Another treat is that Birthdays include a free dessert! We look forward to our next visit and just need to remember to book ahead!
Wonderful cuisine. And the secret is in the sauce! We started with the Asparagus Tempura and the tamari and sesame dipping sauce was "magic" as defined. My spouse had quail for the first time. Perfectly prepared and she gnawed every last tasty morsel from the bones. Her sauce was a roasted chicken black garlic reduction. Marvelous! (I did steal some for my potato pave.) I had the confit of duck leg and substituted the potato pave (you must try these) with a super savory duck reduction sauce. At one point, as we were diving into our dinners, my spouse commented that we weren't talking (and we are very conversant). Food was just too good for words. May have to move to downtown Ann Arbor so I can eat here daily...
I have been a great fan of Logan for so many years. The food is prepared with high-quality ingredients and great culinary expertise. The menu also provides a wide variety of dishes for people to choose from. Some great all time favorites are duck leg confit, leg of lamb, short rib bourguignon, Thai Scallop, etc.. They also have the best warm cookies served with milk. Kevin, the sommelier, is so knowledgeable about wine. So, you can discover some nice bottles of wine at the same time as having a great meal. All the staff is very professional and friendly.
Second time coming to Logan and was very happy with the food. One of the things I really appreciate about Logan is that they take my unusual allergies seriously and find a way to make what I'm interested in without items I'm allergic to, and don't make a fuss about it. The food is amazing (especially duck confit). Only complaint this time (which was not true the last time I came) is that the service was unbelievably slow. We sat down at 7:45 and ordered our full meal including entrees at the earliest opportunity, but were still there until after 10 PM! It's a fancy restaurant, so I didn't expect to eat quickly and then scoot--I expected to sit and enjoy my meal--but I felt that was a little extreme.
Logan always exceeds expectations. During our most recent visit, the cocktaiks were a pleasent surprise. The service is top notch and the menu is more interesting and daring than I remember.
Logan is an understated gem in Ann Arbor. Lots of pleasent restaurants in Ann Arbor claim many things, but Logan quietly sets themselves apart without doing anything other than BEING a great restaurant.
What a treat.
Enjoyed the entire meal from start to finish. The tempura asparagus was light and tasty and I can't stop thinking of the Thai scallops. Lovely craft cocktails. Our server was a bit slow but not entirely his fault - but he was covering the entire patio and just us inside. He was lovely and friendly. Can't wait to be back!
Food was generally very good, though several dishes featured highly spiced Kimchi. That's a very distinct taste and heat you would expect in a Korean restaurant but not one we recall from our last very enjoyable visit to Logan about two years ago. We could not ignore this odd appendage to several dishes.
We had an excellent bottle of a 2013 Michigan Sauvignon Blanc from WaterFire Vineyard, 25 miles northeast of Traverse City on Torch Lake. This very limited bottling is worth seeking out! KUDOS for including the item on Logan's wine list!
Walleye Cheeks appetizer was good. Perch entree was tasty. Veggie sides of Roasted Asparagus and Brussels Sprouts, too, were good. None were exceptional. Crab and Avocado appetizer lacked fresh, tasty crab. Bread Pudding was an unusual interpretation of this dessert staple. A drizzle of sauce on the molded "bread" cake would have imbued some needed moisture. On the other end of the plate, however, was one of the most delicious blueberry and raspberry compotes I've ever tasted. That wowed my palette! I wish the dry, bread component had been a better match with the berry compote.
Service was rote, spotty and lacking sincerity. Our server needs coaching on customer engagement, attentiveness, use of repetitive phrases and not rushing to get plates-still-in-use off the table. This was a major factor in our decision to give a three-star overall rating.
On our two prior dining experiences at Logan, two or three years ago, we'd have most enthusiastically awarded four or five stars. Tonight's experience, therefore, was a decidedly disappointing three. We'll hope our next visit brings this cozy spot back to earlier levels of culinary and service eminence.
Chef Thad never disappoints. We've experienced tastes here that we've never experienced before. What's more, I have several very restrictive dietary constraints, and if I give the chef several days advance notice, he prepares culinary delights within those restrictions.
Had a great dinner with some good drinks. We tried the appetizer special of duck wings. The amount of meat was small but the flavor was great. Had the scallops and lamb which were as good as we remember. The sauce for the scallops is hard not lick off the plate.
We eat out quite frequently and many menus have become monotonous, cookie cutter and stale in the fine dining world. Each course at Logan carefuly married the flavors of multiple cuisines in unexpected combinations with great success. The spicy shrimp pasta was spectacular and by far my favorite dish of the evening, the bacon and egg salad was a close runner up. We will happily return the next time we have the pleasure to visit Ann Arbor again .
Our first time at Logan, and very enjoyable. Meal was superb. We shared the Logan salad - simple green salad house dressing. I had the steak; grilled perfectly with a rich sauce. Spinach and potatoes set it off. Service was attentive without being annoying at all.
About the only area I'd want to improve would be a few more choices in the wine list in the $30 to $60 price range. We enjoyed the wine we had but spent a bit more than usual. But, this is by no means a complaint.
The food was very good although it was the last night they would be opened for the next three weeks. (We did not know this at the time of booking) The waitress finally came to take our order only to tell us of the impending closing for renovation and informed us that they didn't have what we both ordered------in fact, she said they didn't have it all evening---so why not post it or have the wait staff inform patrons upfront what wasn't available!!!!! Perhaps she should have told us this from the start?!?!? So we went with our second choice, which was fine. Another reason for lower scores: Our reservation was for 7:30 and we were promptly seated. Our appetizer arrived at 9:00PM and our dinner arrived at 9:30PM. Our waitress informed us that the "kitchen was backed up tonight". If that was the case it was curious that all diners around us were getting their meals before we did and had arrived at the restaurant considerably after we did. Due to the delay in our meals, she comped us for 2 free desserts although when our check arrived we were charged for them. I pointed out her error and she quickly redid the check. So, overall it wasn't the most seamless dining experience.
We did the tasting menu, and I honestly felt like I would have gotten much more food for my money just ordering off the menu. I left feeling like I still wanted something to eat, which I should not have felt after a $70 meal. It was absolutely delicious, just not the value for the cost I would expect.
Had our anniversary dinner here and went for the tasting menu. The amuse bouche was a delicious tomato lobster bisque (I think they always have the complimentary bite regardless of whether you do the tasting menu). We started the the lemongrass shrimp which looked interesting based on the menu description and it was a perfect appetizer. Next was the appetizer special, opa, kinda of like tuna but lighter and was nicely done with an asian flavor. There was palate cleanser in between, then the perch which we've never tried. I really liked the sauce. The last main course was the short ribs which we have never had either and was very good. Dessert was the bread pudding which was pretty good but I probably would have chosen something else if I had the choice. Overall great dinner that allowed us try things we'd never had before. Cocktails were on point too. It was super quiet that night and we were the last there well before closing. Not sure if it was just the holiday weekend. Either way, we'll be back!
Service was outstanding. The wine steward knows how to pair and recommend wines and spirits. Server accommodated my food allergies with tasty substitutions. Pasta was fresh and nicely seasoned. My lamb was cooked perfectly medium rare and deliciously tender. Nice use of spices through out the meal.
