Locanda Del Borgo Ratings and Reviews
The total experience at Locanda del Borgo was excellent as usual. I have been a customer at the restaurant for about nine years now and the consistency is always something I can count on. The staff is friendly and the service great. You will not be disappointed ... 😀
This is a very good neighborhood restaurant with excellent food. We have been there many times. I had the cioppino and it was very tasty. The special of the day was a fettuccine with chicken and cheese and it was also very good. The fritto misto was an excellent appetizer and the clams/mussels are also great. The wine list is very reasonable with lots of Italian wines. We had an excellent Barbara di Alba. The tiramisu was also outstanding and the best I had in quite awhile in the Denver area. Overall, this is nice Italian restaurant with a varied menu, helpful and attentive staff, and a great way to spend an evening.
Normally I would give this restaurant a great review, but the last two time, the wait staff has been an issue. The previous time was the host was filled with attitude and not at all welcoming. We were glad not to see her and this time the host couldn't have been nicer. However our server was the issue this time. When he finally got to our table, he ran through the specials so fast you could hardly understand him. It was also very loud in there that evening and when we asked him to repeat a couple of the specials, he acted like we insulted him. He carried that attitude for most of the evening. Food was good, not great as I've had before. The Cioppino was a disappointment, it was on such a heaping mound of pasta, it lost its fish stew feeling. Won't be back for a while.
Every time I go into Locanda I want to like it better than I do. I likely will skip it in the future because it's always average-ish. The food is fine...a few things are very good, like their orchiette but most of it is just, uhm, fine - average. The pasta that came with my chicken milanese was not cooked properly - the kind of result that several strands stick to themselves. I made some pasta a few weeks prior to our dining at Locando; it came out just like it did at Locanda and I threw it away. I wouldn't even serve it to myself! They should pay better attention to pasta and not serve it unless it's steaming and perfect!
In general the service is lackluster and the wait staff rarely engages well. Our guy literally plopped our bill on our table while he was talking to another table, without saying the typical, "great to have you here" fare. He never checked on us during the meal. Not once. This isn't unlike other times we've been there, so it wasn't just this one time. So many things they could do to make this place remarkable...and I always hope they will. But they don't. So we will stick with Piatti in our neighborhood.
We came after reading some hit or miss reviews, deciding to give it a try. The restaurant inside is beautifully done and much larger than you might think from the outside. We were a party of five and were surprised that we had no trouble getting a table - the place was almost empty on a Sunday night. The hostess seating us was very friendly and attentive. Several of us ordered dishes with salmon, all consistently dry - that is a disappointment. Others got pizzas - the crust was nice and charred on the edges (in a really great way that wood firing creates) but the finely crumbled sausage was for some reason strangely all piled in the middle of the pizza. I'm not sure if this is the way it is intended, or if was just distracted pizza compiling. At any rate, this was no big deal to me, but my hubby was not happy as it was his pizza. The wait staff was also oddly ambivalent- very strange energy coming from the waiter and support staff filing water glasses - extremely bored is how I would describe it. In and of itself, not a deal breaker but does not make me enthusiastic to come back when you feel as if the waiter is doing you a favor, even if not openly rude. I would stop in for a drink in the bar as the ambiance is very nice. As for food - in general, not terrible (if you can forgive dry salmon) but for the price we will go elsewhere next time. Too bad, as it is so close to our home!
