We have frequented the bar at the Local Chop & Grill House for a good while and liked the atmosphere and the beer selections. We occasionally ordered from the bar menu and liked what their offering. For our anniversary we decided to go to the restaurant. Unfortunately it was a MAJOR disappointment. We were offered an 8:30 seating (earliest available) and arrived promptly at 8:25 and were seated immediately because there were a number of open tables (so much for earliest available). We ordered - very limited menu for a chop house if you wanted anything other than steak. Did you ever hear of pork or lamb + they had sold out of the seafood option for the evening. The wine came and was good, followed by our entrees, portions were minuscule - 6 beans, 5 small pieces of meat in an 8 oz. duck breast (Giving them a break I estimate 4 oz) and my steak fries were cold and soggy when they arrived. I might have complained to the waiter but he never returned to the table until I was in the Men's room after completing my meal. Not once during our meal were we asked "how is everything". So on top of lousy food we got non-existent service - because of the good wine and the fact that what food was served appeared well prepared I grudgingly give them 2-stars.
The food is great, with a number of protein options (steak, fish, poultry) as well as several vegetarian options. The waiters are very knowledgable about options - so don't be afraid
to ask for recommendations. Good wine and beer options are available as well. Also - much of the food is locally sourced - and you can taste the freshness!
We live in Colorado now and here for a visit. Chris was our server a couple of years ago. He was our server this time and remembered our prior visit. Impressive ! We celebrated our wedding anniversary and could not have been more pleased with the food and service. Hats off to Chris !
Everything was great! The food was delicious! Our waiter was awesome!
My wife and I went to the Local Chop and Grill for our 51st wedding anniversary dinner. The soup of very good, the service was very good and our steak was just right. A comment or two the vegetables were tasty but just barely warm. We reported to the waiter and he offered to replace but by that time our steak would have cooled down. The table for two was very small.
This was the second visit to the Local Chop house. It has continued to exceed our expectations. Food is excellent Our waiter was very knowledgeable and very attentive. Will definitely return next time we visit the ares
Had a great meal for my husband’s birthday. Only criticism is that they are really not vegan friendly, even the salads had dairy based dressings with no other options listed on the menu. I did enjoy the cauliflower “steak” however and give good marks for having 1 plant-based diet friendly option on the menu.
This is a wonderful restaurant. Great food, creative menu, excellent service, and an attractive decor. It's fine dining without being stuffy. I highly recommend this.
Delicious meal & excellent service by Doug. Only complain, lobster tail, that was ordered along with a filet, was over cooked & extremely salty!
A delightful meal with a beautiful wife! What more could I hope for?
Enjoyed an excellent meal with friends. Food was very flavorful and hot! Service was also very attentive from Emily our server. Reservations are recommended.
This was a great place and the food was amazing! Our steaks were grilled perfectly and the sides were a great compliment to the entree, and the sauces...just superb. We even got dessert, which we don't normally do, the homemade cinnamon and peanut butter, chocolate chip ice creams were a great way to top off an already incredible meal.
Service and food was amazing! From the moment we walked in the door the hostess seated us in a location away from other diners. The waiter was attentive but not overbearing. And most importantly the food (my husband and I both got the ribeye) was incredible!
You kind of expect to order a steak at a steak house, but this might be the best steak I've ever had. I loved the customizable menu, getting to choose your own rub, sauce, and even topping, not to mention the delicious side options. The steak was cooked to perfection. It had a great wine list - we had the 1000 Stories Zinfandel. I highly recommend this bourbon barrel aged California Zin. However, was most impressive was the service. From the complimentary valet, to the friendly front desk who actually took our coats, to our outstanding server Chris who was certainly the best we've ever had. He made me and my date feel welcome and at home while providing excellent food and wine recommendations and engaging us throughout the meal. To say I was impressed would be an understatement. Thanks to Chris and the rest of the staff for an amazing time!
Visiting JMU with family and celebrating bday. Excellent. Would go back
Awesome restaurant! The food and service were excellent. Perfect evening to celebrate my daughter’s birthday!
We were in town visiting JMU and picked this restaurant for our one dinner in town. What a great choice we made! Everything about our dinner was outstanding. From the hostess who greeted us, our waiter and the food. Oh the food! It's been 3 days and I'm still telling people about our wonderful dinner in Harrisonburg. Thank you for adding to a great visit to JMU.
Service was great and food was perfect portions and delicious!!
Great night, great food, and great service!
We stopped here while traveling through Virginia for dinner. The service was excellent and the food was wonderful. Recommend the Pork Belly appetizer. We would definitely go here again !
Our waitess was fantastic! The food was excellent!
Excellent as usual.
Wonderful food, service, and ambiance. It was chilly where we were first seated, and the staff speedily and graciously changed our table. We ended in a small triangular room right next to the door, but it felt very private and quiet.
The food was special. Best steaks we'd had in a long time, and terrific sides. Fine, thoughtful wine list.
Well worth the price! Go as local as possible to truly enjoy this place!
Excellent service, and delicious food. We enjoyed a nice evening of dining in this wonderful restaurant. You should too.
While I understand management's need to maximize table space, this restaurant has attempted to shoehorn couples into a space ill suited for a pleasant dining experience. The table literally was too small to accommodate menus. We had been there before with a couple and were seated in a much better space. This time we were relegated to space that might well once have been a cloak closet. Not impressed.
It was so good the first night that my friend and I went back a second night while on vacation . The food was great .
It was awesome, the best salmon I have had in a long time .
Very good....will dine there again on next visit to Harrisonburg.
Excellent food prepared perfectly and presented beautifully! Service was very attentive.
Overall good meal. Felt filet was little overcooked
Great food, fantastic service. We really enjoyed ourselves.
Delicious local food and relaxing atmosphere. Love their prime rib and scallops. Great service.
Very good server. He was very knowledgable of the menu and had very good recommendations for wine parings.
Everytime I come up to see my son from James Madison Unversity I take him and his friends to dinner and it’s wonderful and when you have a big group they make it work!
Wonderful staff and food.
My favorite restaurant in Harrisonburg. Tonight started with the beet salad; followed with had the NY Strip with red smashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. House rub and horseradish cream sauce. Everything was perfectly prepared.
Our waiter, Chris, was very friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating.
Local Chop and Grill never disappoints.
We were touring James Madison University and it was my granddaughter’s 18th birthday so I was looking For a nice place to take her. I stumbled into the Local Chop and Grill House and it was fantastic. My granddaughter said it was the best chicken she ever had and my scallops melted in your mouth. I loved the fact you could customize your own meal. Caesar salad was delicious, the bread was delicious and they brought my granddaughter the orange raspberry sorbet, which is homemade and to die for. I only wished I would be able to buy a gallon of it to take home. The wait staff was friendly courteous very knowledgeable and attentive. My granddaughter and I both think it was one of the best meals we’ve ever had. I am only sorry we live 400 miles away!
I enjoyed a tasty pork chop. The root vegetables were nicely seasoned. The bread was warm and delicious.
Douglas was an excellent server.
Always a great meal. Good for special occasions or just a quiet night out for two.
A bit pricey, but the food was well prepared and good. Our waitress Emily remembered us from 5 months ago and was fantastic. The sauces were phenomenal. The presentation was beautiful. My only complaint is that I would have preferred my sides (heat) hotter. But I like my food very hot. My family had no complaint.
