Local Chop & Grill House
Farm to Table is the mainstay of our eating philosophy. That’s why we work with community food producers to support organic, sustainable, LOCAL farms, and put the finest, freshest foods on the table for you. We’re serious about making choices that are environmentally sound, from the food we carefully hand-select to the aprons our kitchen and wait staff wear.
Casual and fun, The LOCAL Chop & Grill House brings you world-class dining with a decidedly LOCAL flavor.
This is the third time we’ve been there and call three times have been excellent. I would highly recommend it
We had a very delicious and lovely dinner on Friday night. Reservations are a must here as this is really one of the few fine restaurants in town. My son’s steak was fantastic, the shrimp cocktail was the perfect appetizer. And that bread ❤️ I will say that my pork chop was tasty but dry. These days pork should all be brined (IMO) for tenderness, but the presentation was beautiful. We had a terrific waiter and support staff most of the way through but then they seemed to disappear for awhile. Odd. The Caesar salad was unimpressive and had no anchovies for that kick. We had delicious coffee but no dessert. Although some of the things weren’t perfect, we had a lovely time, enjoyed our experience and would go back again. We would recommend it!
Food was delicious. Expensive but worth it. Drinks were good too. I would go back for sure.
Once again we had a delightful meal at the Local Chop & Grill House. We shared a tasty Smoked Paprika Calamari and I had the Salmon Filet while my husband enjoyed the J&L Green Pork Chop. Our sides were also good and we both loved the special side of cabbage and apples. It was my birthday celebration and they made it special with some mint chocolate bark with a lovely greeting. My only wish for this restaurant is that they would consider putting lamb on the menu.
Ok, 5 stars and Chris provided excellent service. Now , this is why I use Open Table; especially when, I travel. I felt so proud among my friends ; because, the restaurant was my choice.
Waiter was very attentive and explained in detail the specials not listed on the menu!! Food selection was amazing. Each course arrived at the appropriate time. The food itself was unbelievable. Steak that was ordered was extremely tender and the accompanying sauce and sides were delicious!!
I had been here before in 2015 and wanted to bring my wife and daughter here when visiting her at JMU. Was every bit as good as I remembered. Loved the building, ambiance is great. Waitstaff very attentive and friendly, it's a team approach with multiple individuals serving the table. Our waiter Chris in particular was excellent. Focaccia had just the right amount of salt, I'm not a bread eater but couldn't resist. All of us had salads and steaks. Portions were decent-sized and uniformly well-prepared, perhaps a little over-priced, but I left feeling fully sated without the stuffed pig sensation you might get at other steakhouses.
Total for three was $175, including tip but no alcohol. Not a cheap meal, but no doubt one of the best in town.
Disappointed in the temperature of meat. Asked for medium well and got just medium. One person in our group had to send back
Great, as always!
We come to town once or twice per year and love this restaurant. The food was very good - as expected - but the service was terrible. We made the reservation for our son’s birthday. Service was SO SLOW that my son needed to leave before we could even have dessert. Our server said he had a large table upstairs ... which I am guessing impacted the service. Seems that either he or mgmt should be able to sort this out.
We look forward to trying the place again on our next trip — hoping for an overall better experience.
Food excellent. Service fair. With many open tables all around us on the second floor, we were seated at the worst table and had to request to be moved. For an obvious upscale place and price not sure why this would be??
Great sevice and food. We always come when we are in town.
When asked on reservation, made it clear this was a 21st birthday celebration but other than “Happy Birthday” no special offering was made. Also when called about seating prior to dinner said that I used a cane and stairs would be difficult. In spite of early (5PM) reservation, and empty tables on the first floor when we arrived, we were told that they had already been reserved for other handicapped diners. Really? Need to fine tune to make this a really exceptional experience.
We went to Local Chop & Grill House during Parents' Weekend at James Madison. They had a special 3 course Prix Fixe menu. Food and Service were outstanding. Food comparable to high-end Chicago / NYC steak houses.
Parents weekend dinner delish!
Great atmosphere. Food was amazing. Yummy! Nice to have such a lovely dining experience. Can't wait to go back.
Loved the setting, the food, the complimentary valet. It’s an excellent place to date, anniversary, or special occasion. It is a bit spendy, but very comparable prices for the quality of meal and experience that we enjoyed. That coupled with local meats and produce when available make this spot worth checking out. The local beers were also very good.
We were staying overnight in town and decided to try out the Local Chop & Grill House. Service was great. We actually are in the lounge area (same menu as restaurant). We will definitely try to visit again as we travel through the area.
They had amazing food, great waitress, affordable price.
We love this bar and restaurant. Everyone is wonderful and the food is delicious! Stop by early for a signature drink at the bar.
The food was excellent. Our waiter was friendly, however, our meal took THREE HOURS from start to finish. The place was practically empty when we arrived and we watched table after table arrive, order, get served, pay,and leave while we waited for either our food or service. Our water glasses were not refilled the entire time we were there. We were a group of five with no special meal instructions or excessive requests. We all either had one or two alcoholic drinks. Some had dessert. Our bill was over $300. We were trying to celebrate a special work accomplishment and left very disappointed. Our waiter was probably disappointed too because we felt we had no choice but to only leave him 10% gratuity. We are normally very generous tippers. Sorry for him and sorry for our unpleasant experience.
We had a wonderful meal with great service and high quality food
Amazing food and amazing service! Would go again when in the area
Chop House is one of our favorite places in Harrisonburg. We were seated promptly for our reservation and Michelle very capably outlined the specials. We started with the green pea arancini and a special salad of grilled eggplant, charred tomatoes, red onion, goat cheese and honey vinaigrette. The salad was very good but could have been outstanding with a bit more attention to the eggplant - it was barely grilled and extremely firm. We ordered the filet and ribeye, both perfectly cooked. Sides of chèvre Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were great, but the asparagus we both ordered was woody, not properly trimmed and underdone. More attention needs to be paid to the vegetables. Dessert sounded better than it tasted - a brownie sundae. Brownie was a bit on the dry side but the sesame ice cream was delicious.
Service was outstanding but there was a lengthy pause between starters and mains, I suspect due to several large parties. All in all a good meal but room for improvement. We’ve eaten here numerous times and the kitchen just wasn’t on their A game.
Local Chop is one of our favorite restaurants in our travels up and down the east coast. The food is consistently excellent and Service was extremely attentive. Always a repeater when we're in Harrisonburg.
Amazing food - superb service. Great portion size.
The Local Chop has been Harrisonburg’s référence for consistent high quality dining with a menu offering fresh locally sourced produce and meats. Our party enjoyed a seasonal green tomato gazpacho as starters and had steaks, scallops, fish and chicken as entrees. All were cooked extremely well and the seasonal vegetables, duck fat fries and pimento grits were top rated sides. Upstairs was quiet, and the bar downstairs is always a good choice for a lighter meal and great local beers. While the chefs have changed over the years, the management of the restaurant and the service are second to none in the area. Highly recommend for any occasion meriting a great meal.
This is our second time at the Local Chop and Grill House...we will be hard pressed to go anywhere else when visiting Harrisonburg as the whole experience was so memorable.
Anna, our waitress, made it a memorable experience. Food and wine were excellent as usual. We live in Ky and always look forward to eating there when we visit. If you love seafood their U-10 scallops are a must.
Garret took care of us tonight for our date night tonight. We ended up being the first table sat in the restaurant so it was VERY quiet. We were very impressed with pretty much everything tonight!! Garret took fantastic care of us the food was excellent (even though both of our steaks were over cooked, they were so delicious we didn’t send them back and we both ate almost all of it), and everything was fantastic. Thank you for a great evening!
Service was terrible.
Very good service. Friendly staff. Had a large party upstairs that caused over an hour delay on our order. Reservations were for 7:30 and we didn't receive our meal until 9:30. Will be eating there again.
A wonderful experience--a beautiful evening with my wife, sitting on the glassed-in porch
May be the best restaurant in the Harrisonburg area. The cuisine is fresh and local and the service always good.
The Local Chop and Grill house was fantastic. Our waiter Chris was very knowledgeable about the menu and food, charismatic, and humorous. The food was very delicious, ambiance was great, and we actually had the entire area too ourselves for most of our meal.
Business meeting - was a good place to take a client etc.
We were a party of 6 celebrating identical twins 75th birthday. They seated us in a quiet alcove, at a large round table; where we could all see each other. It was like having our own dining room.
All of our food was of excellent quality and presented beautifully.
Well worth the prices for such a special occasion. An extensive wine list with moderate price wine also.
The birthday girls were each presented with a special dessert.
Excellent food, from the bread to the salad to the entree! Excellent service as well! Once of the best duck breasts we ever had - tasty and cooked to perfection! Our daughter just started JMU, so we look forward to many more dinners at Local Chop & Grill in the future!
Best steakhouse in Virginia. Outstanding service. Will return always.
Overrated, overpriced, nothing special here. Service started out ok until restaurant started filling up. Long delay after our appetizers till entrees came out, diners seated after us were getting served before us! All dishes came out lukewarm at best. If I didn't know better, I'd swear they were just sitting in the kitchen. Had the ribeye...was probably the size described on the menu, however, was thin and chewy. Whipped potatoes should not have lumps. Duck fat fries nothing to write home about...McDonald's just as good. Everything overloaded with salt, not properly seasoned. The only thing that was done right was that we were offered a few free desserts. Overall, portions are small (for a steakhouse) and overpriced for the quality of the food. Do yourself a favor and try a chain like The Palm or Ruth Chris and see what experience what steak should be.
