Local 188 Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I had dinner at Local 188 and were so pleased. The food was creative and delicious! The beer and wine list is extensive and offers wonderful local and imported choices. The staff are so pleasant. Our waiter was incredible and such a joy. He offered great suggestions and was always present but never intrusive. We cannot wait to return! Wonderful night out!
A great place with ample seating on the Peninsula. We go here often for drinks and since it's near our house, we eat here often as well. They have a huge open space for intown and the menu is wide and varied from small plates to large. Plenty of open seating and you can look at the kitchen as well if you want, something we enjoy.
Some standouts are deviled eggs, the mussels (tried it with red this time, very good!), the goat cheese au gratin, and the mushroom risotto.
Staff and bartender are attentive but not obtrusive. And the food is really top notch. Plus they take reservations and walk ins.
My favorite bartender in my city of Providence suggested this restaurant to me. We love Spanish tapas and Local 188 didn't disappoint. Those were the most perfectly cooked mussels I have ever eaten. The staff was accommodating. Even though our reservation got a bit mixed up they made up for it with a genuine interest in making us happy. I would also suggest the octopus and the montaditos. Our server was pleasant and helpful! Such a great night out!
We came in for an early dinner last week. We showed up a little early but got seated right away. We were able to order drinks even though the kitchen didn't open until 5:30. They have a nice assortment of cocktails. I had one with whiskey and ginger (don't remember the name) and my wife had the Great North Woods - delicious! We shared the hummus and flatbread to start. This came out in an unexpected way - one giant piece of flatbread with the hummus on top. It definitely worked for the two of us but I was trying to imagine a group sharing this. (It would have been a little difficult, and maybe a tad unhygienic.) The flavor was great though. I had the mushroom risotto for my dinner and it was very good, well-seasoned and the rice was cooked perfectly. My wife ordered the sirloin and while the grits and leeks were delicious, the meat was a little overcooked (more of a medium-well than a medium). I wonder if it had died a bit while the risotto was going. She thought the flavor was good though. Two things that really stood out were my surprise about the portions (very generous!) and I love the great beer variety, many of which are local (they will even let you buy samplers if you don't want a full glass of something). Overall a good dining experience!
I used to love Local 188 but our most recent experience was really disappointing. Very slow service, sub par food and a nice but not helpful waitress. When she asked how everything was I told her that the food was a little cold. She said, "Oh, that's a bummer." Did not offer to take it back, no discount, no apology.
Overall, overpriced with a high and mighty feel. They need to up their game. We won't be back.
We went to Local 188 during Maine Restaurant Week. We arrived early and opted to enjoy a cocktail at the bar prior to dinner. The bar atmosphere was very friendly and there were great selections to chose from. Our dinner selection was a fixed price Cajun theme with pairings. From start to finish, the meal was fantastic! Preparation, presentation, and pairings were perfect! Our server was attentive without being overbearing. We'll definitely return and have added this restaurant to our list of places to bring company to for dining.
Ny husband and I appreiated the thoughtful presentation and contemporary flavor combinations (carmelized fennel panna cotta with parsnip ice cream!). The service was excellent and the food beautiful and delicious. We look forward to dining there again on our next trip to Portland.
The menu seemed quite promising, with dishes from several cuisine traditions. the presentation was good, but the flavoring of the dishes was a bit disappointing.
It was difficult to carry on a conversation with more than one person. The restaurant atmosphere is visually pleasing, but the large room and tin ceiling are designed to create a lively atmosphere that is -- frankly -- noisy.
We frequently go to Local 188, great tapas for sharing and main meal if you do not feel like sharing. The deviled eggs are a favorite, we also shared the cheese platter with a generous amount of cheese and the meat platter and lastly shared the hanger steak (which is a meal for one). Our service was wonderful and the people fun to be around
Many times I have walked past local 188 - this was the first time to stop in and what a treat - a hidden gem in plain view- staff were very informed as to the wonderful choices on the menu - food was out of this world - beautifully cooked and presented - drinks were good too!! Hope to return soon.
we were a group of 3 vegetarians, one of whom is gluten free and one with no diet restrictions. There were plenty of delicious, tasty choices. Wonderful choice of tapas (a bit expensive for the deviled eggs and fried garlic) but really no complaints in taste and we enjoyed them. The risotto was very flavorful. Creative cocktails. Good desert. The banana cake was amazing. Noisy. Great service and a fun time.
Our party consisted of six women. We were seated promptly in a relatively quiet area as we had requested. The menu was varied enough so that we all found several selections to choose from. All our entrees were well prepared and very good. Our waitress was professional and attentive. The restaurant itself is attractive and has a comfortable evening vibe. This was my third visit and I will go again.
