AVerage to slightly above average - a good spot for consistent 'good' food. Reasonable price, average menu.
Nothing outstanding here, but overall a good local venue
Great food, great service. Can't wait to go back.
great value. Portion sizes are more than ample. We had a combination of the mussels, beef short ribs, and squash salad. First rate.
Great place for a group. Staff was very attentive to our needs. Food was amazing!
Most everything was great. Prompt service, the drinks were good, food was good. The only complaint is it was too loud. It was hard having a conversation
We had a reservation for 7:30pm and showed up a few minutes early (so we wouldn't hold them up) only to find that we had to wait for 25 minutes to be seated. We were seated just before 8pm. It wasn't really a problem to wait but we couldn't get near the bar and the service for just standing in the bar area was less than helpful. Had they been more helpful we would have dropped more $$ on a bar bill but couldn't get waited on in that area. The food was great but the staff doesn't know how to make guests feel comfortable while waiting.......and they could have gotten more bar business from us had they been more helpful.
Good food, ambiance, service, and parking .
Unfortunately, two appetizers were unavailable when we appeared at 8:30 p.m., both of which I would have ordered!
Other than that, the mussels and pollock were delicious, and the service was incomparable. We requested seating away from the entrance and in a quiet spot, ahead of time, and were accommodated. We will definitely return.
A neighborhood spot, easy to get to with parking - a huge plus. The food is always very good and hits excellent/outstanding some evenings. The wine list is great and we always find something that pleases. The servers are pleasant and helpful. Sometimes it is a little noisey but even then the energy is always positive.
The Dining Style for Local 188 on this website is characterized as ‘casual elegant’. We disagree. It is not elegant, it is irritatingly noisy. ‘Casual ebullient ‘, or just plain rowdy are better descriptors. It was impossible to hear anything above the din in the dining area. But, then again, the dining area included the bar area, the lounge area and the kitchen. The banging of the pots and pans helped contribute to the noise in the room. People were yelling at each other in order to be heard. My wife and I found conversation to be impossible. We did not have a quiet evening together as we enjoy and expected. We were very disappointed.
Local 188 is a gem. The staff is ALWAYS happy, attentive, and accommodating! The food is always delicious, fresh, and creative. It is great for brunch on the weekends, but get there early for a table. They fill up FAST!
Thank you Local 188, for gracing the neighborhood!
Excellent food and service for variety of occasions. Highest recommendations.
As always, we had a fine meal at Local 188. The flatbread starter was more than enough to share for two, and was delicious. The hanger steak - a great favorite of mine - seemed even better than ever, and oh that blue cheese potato gratin. The house paella was full of shellfish, chicken and chorizo, and was excellent. This place remains a favorite.
Outstanding dinner. Chic but not snobbyish, tasted like real food with a gourmet attitude. Chicken liver tapas was a terrific surprise in value. My partner had the smoked chicken which was really smoked, not just flamed over wood chips. Two minuses: my prosecco was not properly chilled and the flourless chocolate cake was just plain, not very memorable. Other than that, dinner for two was great value. Would go again.
Never have a bad meal here, but this was the first time the descriptions didn't match the dishes. After a disappointing perusal of the menu, it tuned out in the end the meals were actually better than described.
Delicious memorable food and service. A great place for those who love food!!
Food is good, but portions are small for the price. Very enjoyable with no real complaints.
I typically don't write reviews but I wanted to express my disappointment with Local 188. I love the atmosphere and the service is always wonderful but I'm finding that the prices have become unreasonably high and the menu selection is not as good as it has been in the past. They've made some changes, not for the better. I used to love the paella but they've increased the cost and made the portion size smaller. It was also very salty. They used to have a paella selection without fish, but there isn't one anymore. Given the number of reasonably priced restaurants in Portland, I don't think we'll be visiting Local 188 again soon. On a positive note, they make the best mojito I've ever had.
Local 188 is a gem. It is my favorite restaurant in Portland. Reliable quality, creative food, reasonable prices, and hey, I can walk there in 10 mins from home. It doesn't get any better than that!
Absolutely no complaints. We always have a great meal. The food is fresh, seasonal and well-prepared
Great spot! Three of us went here on a Friday night and the place was hopping. The food was fresh and delicious. My husband had the Casco Bay hake which was incredibly fresh, I had the gnocchi (very nice), our friend had the chicken and we all shared the mushroom appetizer (a special).
We are really glad we tried this local gem, service was thoughtful and not too rushed.
Staff very friendly and will do what ever it takes to make your visit enjoyable. Food was very good presentation was good. I would recommend everyone to spend an evening at Local 188 for dinner with good food and casual atmosphere.
Local 188 is a great find. The flat bread and mussels are outstanding. Had the short ribs and it was tender, full of favor, and quality for the price. Did not have room for dessert, but looking around I wish I had. The serves was on time, attentive, and served each course with care. The old time beer's were a great find, Schiltz, Blue Ribon etc.. If I come back to the area Local 188 would be on the list.
This was an overall, great experience. Our server was full of knowledge about the menu and very attentive. The food was delicious as well. I definitely recommend this place.
Great food that's innovative, generous a.nd presented well in a friendly and lively environment.
We loved the hangar steak! And the pecan pie was delicious as well.
We made the mistake of going to Local 188 on a Saturday night. Truthfully, we should have left when we got to the maitre d's desk because the noise was overwhelming. It was not possible to hold a conversation at our table without raising our voices--I was horse the next morning. I suspect that mid-week it is different. The service was excellent. The server was really good at being around when needed, but even she had to point to menu items because of the background noise. The food was good and the dishes were plentiful. Be careful about ordering too much. Splitting the appetizer is a good idea. The wine list is extensive and you can certainly find a good match. I think the key takeaway is avoid the weekend to avoid the noise.
Local 188 remains a consistent, high-performer. Considering that Portland is lousy with high-quality restaurants, Local 188 remains one of my favorites. The creative way that food is prepared is impressive and, even after many trips there, I can always find something exciting. I also especially enjoy the flexibility of the menu from small tasting items to appetizers worth sharing. Although not a common concern, the free parking in the back and easy access also make it one of our favorites. This accessiblity is a rare feature in restaurants on the peninsula. I strongly recommend Local 188 for high quality food, whether it be a dinner for two or a large group. One thing to note is the energy does not lend it do quiet dinners.
Fantastic dinner! Great atmosphere! Very creative drinks!
I just wanted to say thank you to the staff of local 188 we had an amazing time and wonderful anniversary and we will be back...
As always enjoyed our meal. We need to remember Local 188 more often.
We had a wonderful time. The service, from the front desk, to the bar, to the dinner table, was uniformly pleasant, helpful and upbeat. The vibe was a little bit funky/eceletic and very comfortable. The drink we had at the bar before dinner was unique and delicious. The 3 tapas we shared at the dining table were creative and delightful. We found the price quite reasonable and it was one of our top meals we have enjoyed this summer! Thanks for making it special!
We were disappointed. After making a reservation, we showed up a little early and were shown to a table, but then it took a solid ten minutes for the waitress to come and intro/get a drink order. We found her to be a bit snobby and she seemed almost annoyed to have to wait on us. We regularly eat at establishments of this "calibur" and therefore we know what the norm should be for service. Once we got our drinks, it took just as long to get her back to even list the specials. The food was excellent, and for that we forgave some of the negative energy, but all in all-NOT impressed.
P.S. I have been to this restaurant several times before and eaten at the bar and had drinks in the lounge area. Service and food was fine...
food was creative,service excellent.
We went with six friends to celebrate my birthday. It was exceptional. Most of us ordered the paella, which deserves its reputation. The service was great, and we'll be back soon
This is what "local" food should be--truly local--expertly and inventive prepared--but not trying to hard. A comfortable interesting low key ambiance--and absolutely impeccable service. As a starter--the flatbread and a hummus with a scallions and melon was a standout--and my friend chose an amazing entree--lavender brined chicken--whoa! Very nice wine choices--and service that was close to the best I have ever had.
Fantastic paella, great cocktail with "homemade" infused gin, wonderful friendly and efficient service. I loved the ambience, too - lighting was great, had a lovely table. Very impressed and will surely return.
Food was delicious as usual. Service was good but sometimes server was hard to find. It was very noisy, but I tend to forget that between visits.
The environment and food was good. I wouldn't give this restaurant 5 stars. The noise was beyond reproach. It was extremely difficult to hear members at the table even when he or she were sitting across from me. Overall, a nice outing and would go back to this establishment for another meal. The best thing about this place were their raisin bread drizzled with some kind of oil. Delicious!
Food was great. I have trouble even giving 1 star for the service. We waited 45 minutes for our server to come over to our table. Not even a drink order....we should have gotten up and left.
