Lobster Box a classic New York seafood and steak restaurant. New York is famous for both its extravagant seafood entrées and massive steak dinners. The Lobster box epitomizes both of these things. Located on City Island, the Lobster Box gets all of its seafood in fresh daily from the nearby harbor. Despite the decadent nature of the food on the menu, the restaurant itself is decorated in a very laid back and relaxed style.
The Lobster Box is open for both lunch and dinner, with dinner mainly serving having larger portions than the earlier meals. The menu is very large, with plenty of variety and options. Some of the appetizers include mozzarella sticks, jumbo shrimp cocktail, buffalo wings, baked clams casino, oysters Rockefeller, fried calamari and many more. As for dinner options, guests can enjoy dishes such as Alaskan king crab legs, broiled lobster tail, sautéed salmon filet and pan seared scallops.

Lobster Box Ratings and Reviews
We frequent this restaurant every summer with the kids . This is our go to City Island spot . We've always had an excellent experience. My daughters graduation dinner, wasn't exceptional . This is the first ( and I hope the last time ) service will be less then perfect .
I normally dislike writing negative reviews as I know it can harm or hinder a business so this review is mainly about the manager that worked on Saturday 6/25/2016 around 9pm. My boyfriend and I decided to go on a date night in city island. First issue, when we first arrived no one was at the front to greet us or seat us. We had to go to the bar to ask how do we get seated and that we had reservations. Second issue our waitress disappeared for an hour. I had to get up and ask a near by waiter if they could find our waitress or the manager as we were waiting for our food for an hour. 3rd issue, 20minutes later the manager arrives with our food and a very aggressive and rude attitude probably because he knew the service we were receiving was terrible! I politely asked what the hold up was as I know and understand things can happen, its life. His response "there is no hold up waiting an hour for your food is normal in a restaurant" At this point we had been waiting an hour and 30minutes. He was very unapologetic as well as the waitress. I told him there had to be a better explanation and if there wasn't I would no longer like to dine at this establishment. He then snatched our plates away and muttered something under his breathe and walked away! This manager needs to be re trained on customer service as well as people skills! I will never dine here again as there are plenty of other options on city island. If your reading this I recommend you select another restaurant.
We have been to many restaurants on City Island. This has had by far the best food. i had a seafood risotto that was amazing. The portions are very large. Took a lot home and has it for lunch the next day. Very friendly staff, our service was very nice and very helpful. She gave us suggestions on what to order. Will definitely come back.
Disapointed. I took my husband for Father's Day and it was not a good experience. The food was not good and definitely not worth the money we spent. What was worse was we had a terrible waiter. He actually disappeared at one point and we had to wait 20 minutes to get the check after asking multiple people to tell our waiter we were ready to leave. We will not go back ... ever... nor would we recommend it to another..at least no one we like.
I was disappointed in The Lobster Box. There was only a small menu available, even though their website said the Dinner menu would be available upon request. The "Holiday Menu" that was available, had a limited selection, and was quite high in price. I feel the restaurant's food was not worth the high prices.
Had an early Father's day lunch. There weren't many people there, so I was surprised that the table wasn't clean when we sat down. It look like salt had spilled. We asked them to clean it off, and the person cleaning it sprayed the blue cleanser on the table, not on the towel. I tried not to breath it in and covered my utensils and hoped none of the cleanser got on it. Other than that, the service was fine and the food was very good. Although, I'd say it was pretty standard Italian Seafood.
Food was amazing my friends all enjoyed their food. The waiter was very helpful and took great care of us and all our needs. A great example was my friends daughter only wanted a burger but with bacon in a seafood restaurant and the waiter got her order complete.
It was a beatific day out yesterday so I grabbed the family and took them out to City Island to our FAVORITE Spot THE LOBSTER BOX!! They never disappoint and yesterday was no different . The kids loved their favorite pasta the Lobster and shrimp fettuccini Alfredo. My wife and I split the Paella and it was not only delicious but massive! We had to take some home and we're happy to do so lol. Can't wait to go back
Understandable I went on Mother's Day so I knew the wait was going to be crazy. Had reservation so the initial wait wasn't bad just too much confusion when entering and speaking with the hostess. Water and bread was given to the table but we had to pour or own water. Not the biggest deal as I can pour my own cup. 45 minutes into us being seated we had to grab someone attention to place our order. No one acknowledge us or checked in with our party to see if we needed anything. Once or server arrived he didn't greet us nor exchange names. At this point we were all hungry so we placed our order food and drinks included. Waited an additional hourand still no food or drinks. At this point I'm upset because it shouldn't take you that long to bring drinks to our table. I'm getting inpatient my kids are complaining their hungry and no form of communication between us and the server. After feeling ignore which is what basically happen I has to find the server to see the status on my order. 5 minutes after tracking him down our food and drinks were served. At this point I was completed upset. I understood I will have to wait it's Mother's Day everyone out and about but to truly ignore a paying customer is beyond disrespectful. Communication is key. why do I have to track down a server to get serviced? Keep me posted come to our table and see if there's anything we need. Having to wait an hour for soft drinks is crazy. The bus boy was more attentive then our server. The food was delicious that's probably the only reason I would ever try to give them a second chance. The menu was prefix for the most part so we didn't get to view their regular menu. My review is strictly on the customer experience which was extremely unprofessional and horrible.
The food was delicious. The only problem was the menu! The regular menu was replaced by a very limited Holiday menu, which was very disappointing to all of us. If a restaurant is going to replace the regular menu, they need to inform their customers before they arrive so that they have the option to go elsewhere for the menu items of their choice.
Service was slow. I know it was Mother's Day but that's why they offer a limited menu. Also no excuse for keeping us waiting at the table with the waiter not even addressing us. My steak didn't come how I ordered it and I believe my menu came with vegetables or a salad, which we never got. Didn't bother complaining because I was just happy to get my food. Location was beautiful.
My wife and I stopped at the Lobster Box on our way from LaGuardia to Westchester County this past Friday evening. My wife had been to City Island many times with her family when she was growing up. I had never been. The Lobster Box was established in 1946 and all of its best attributes are still present. Fresh seafood served in a classic casual yet somehow fancy dining room by attentive servers for a very reasonable price. We had a dozen oysters and the Broiled Captain's Platter. Both were excellent! Julius, the manager, stopped by a couple of times too. He's a very capable, friendly young man. Highly recommended!
So this Valentines Day I took my date out to City Island. Every restaurant was slammed and had three hour waits. I was about to give up and leave the island until I saw The Lobster Box. I had never been there so I figured id go in and give it a try. They were packed yet had less then an hour wait. We decided to stay and give it a try. The food WAS AMAZING! Servers were attentive and prompt which was mind boggling considering how busy they were. The manager even stopped by to see how we we're doing. I can't wait to go back. Thanks for such an amazing night !
Always great service and consistent quality. Generous quantities, lovely decor and as expected in City Island lots of seafood dishes. Their steak and seafood for two is generous and will easily feed three and potentially a 4th.
Their menu is full of several good pasta and non seafood dishes as well.
Great for families and their bar is very inviting as well. Our choice in city Island whenever we take the ride from Queens.
We were greeted immediately and seated by the window. We recognized our server Cosmo as he has worked in some of the other spots on the Island. He treated us like royalty. Thank you Cosmo. I had Paella- delicious, my husband had shrimp scampi and we were pleased with our selections. My daughter had a chicken dish and loved it. We had enough for Sunday dinner. As we were leaving Julian our previous server who I think was promoted to manager remembered us and invited us back.
Great food, great company and great staff. We will go back.
My wife wanted lobster dinner for our anniversary and she's been wanting to go back to city island for a while so we decided to go to the Lobster Box.
Everyone that worked there was very friendly and courteous...from the hostess to the waiter and other waiters saying hello.
The lobster bisque was to die for, the fried calamari was a bit tough but the surf and turf was cooked to perfection. The portions are generous in that we didn't have room for dessert.
It was a lively place with parties going on in different private rooms.
Overall a very nice dining experience!!!!
Got lost traveling from Manhattan to City Island. Reservation not a problem, since the place was pretty empty when we got there.
The lobster roll sandwich was excellent - more generous than most and on a warm toasted bun.
Difficult to rate the ambience since there were no more than perhaps two other occupied tables at any time during our lunch.
Food was excellent, but need an opportunity to test the location when it is busy.
However, the trip from SoHo to City Island was made worthwhile by the lunch at Lobster Box.
Dined here on a Friday night with friends. Huge woody ocean front restaurant. The visit started with a heap of garlic bread being brought to the table...pretty good. The menu was quite extensive. We started with Calamari which was large and tender. Our entrees, Shrimp Parm, which my friend said was "amazing", Lobster & Shrimp Alfredo, DELISH! and the broiled Captain's Platter, fresh and nicely cooked but a little dull, were hearty portions. We all had major leftovers. The others were stuffed but I left room for dessert and thank goodness I did! The Tiramisu was more of a layer cake style...light, flavorful and yummy. Tab for all this, 3 glasses of wine and one mixed drink was $170.
Our waiter and all of the staff were attentive and very pleasant. The maître d made us feel warm and welcomed. City Island is not a place I've frequented but now that I've found The Lobster Box, I'll definitely be going more often.
This will be my third time visiting lobster box , and every time they never disappointed me. My server Honest Abe was fantastic , outstanding service ! I ordered the Snow crab legs special , OH MY GOODNESS it was delicious and flavorful . The free sangria with my dish was mouth watering . The staff is so friendly and nice , I had every staff member attending to me like as if I were royalty ! The customer service was appreciated and amazing. I will be going to lobster box regularly now ...
I love this restaurant!!!! I ordered the Snow Crab Leg Special and its was absolutely fantastic! The service was impeccable, ambience fantastic, and the drinks simply to die for. I can't imagine going anywhere else on City Island. I love this place and I can't wait to go back! Lobster box for life!!!
My lady and I on date night. We show up driving from Manhattan. Valet parking. So far so good. Nice greeting by young hostess who takes us to a window side booth. So far so good. Our waiter brings us drinks and we order. I ask him about the lobster stuffed with crab meat. Listed at $38. He says it's not the most popular dish. I order it anyway. I get served the lobster plain. No crab meat stuffing. I ask for the right dish - they say sorry - it was a confusion I thought you said no crab meat, etc. Then when the bill comes my dish is listed at $50. 38 for the plain lobster, 12 for the stuffed crab meat side dish they brought. I ask my waiter to rectify the bill. No can do. His name is Cosmo. I got overcharged. All they had to do was to buy me a cheap drink and I would have been fine with it. Short sighted people.
I've eaten at Lobster Box numerous times and each time they never fail to provide good food and service. This time my family of 18, including young children, celebrated a wedding anniversary in a private room that provided more than enough space for seating and the kids to play. We brought our own projector and tried figuring out where to project our slideshow. The waiters brought out a projector screen for us and extra extension chords on the spot. They were extremely accommodating and patient and the food and drinks are always delicious. We called the day of the event to also include a tiramisu cake. We thought we would see the whole cake, as if to blow out a candle, but they brought out pieces for everyone instead. That was our only concern but everything else was excellent.
