As a local, Little Savannah is our "go to" for business and personal eating. The food is outstanding, the bartender is fantastic, and the staff and owner are friendly and engaged. I recommend this restaurant for both business and personal meals. It is a quiet, relatively undiscovered Birmingham treasure.
Reservations were made. However, my friends and I were seated in the bar area at a table next to the door. I would have thought if reservations were made, we would have gotten preference to dine in that area. In the future, please be mindful where your hostess seat new comers when reservations are made in advance. That is so important to me in an atmosphere like that. The food was ok but we were not asked how we wanted our meat cooked. My friend's meat was too rare to her liking and mine was ok. The waiter was very nice and that goes a long ways so hands up for that.
They had our reservations for our anniversary dinner, but the host had a hard time seating us. Eventually, they put us at a 2-seater near the window. There must have been a draft in the window because we were absolutely freezing. Kept our jackets on. The wait staff was a little while in delivering the menu. Menu was little light with not much on it, but everything looked good. Wife got beef tenderloin, which was delicious. I got gumbo and a salad. I didn't like the salad, but the gumbo was pretty good. Apps were good: warm bread and olive oil and some crab claws. Wife said she'd come back. I'm not as sure. Her tenderloin was delicious, though. If I go back, that's what I'll have.
My friends and I had a wonderful meal a Little Savannah. The appetizers were very good. My crab cakes were as close to perfect as can be expected. We all had a different dish and each was delicious. The service was good, but not overbearing. Chef Holt was very helpful and gracious to us and even suggested what I eventually had for my meal. I would recommend Little Savannah for anyone looking for a quite place to eat with friends or for a date.
We visit Little Savannah 2-3 times a year and always have wonderful meals. Friday night was an exception. I ordered the crab cakes and they were filled with shells. The tomato risotto that accompanied the crab cakes was delicious and could have been a stand alone dish. I ordered a specialty cocktail and was displeased with the flavor. The bubbly cocktail was mixed with gin and was not a pleasant combination. My husband enjoyed his specialty cocktail, a ginger-based drink. The dessert left little to be desired. We ordered the pound cake with strawberry anglaise. It was incredibly dense and not buttery at all. The finely chopped basil that was sprinkled on top of the pound cake was not needed and clashed with the flavors of the cake and berries. Overall, we were expecting a 5 star meal and left feeling like we had a lackluster experience. I am wondering if the food’s quality was lacking because the executive chef was wandering around the restaurant schmoozing with guests instead of managing the kitchen and handling quality control. I wish the experience had been different, as we have always listed Little Savannah as our favorite date night restaurant.
Little Savannah is in a quaint revitalized neighborhood. The building is obviously very old with some history. We loved the atmosphere, especially the art work. The staff was fantastic and the chef/owner makes an effort to speak to every customer -- he especially engages the children (we had our grand daughter with us).
The brussels sprouts are great.
The Chef offered up a different way to enjoy the sriracha Brussel sprouts appetizer and we went with that recommendation— great decision. My date enjoyed her crab cakes and my Redfish was expertly prepared.
We had a super dining experience and didn’t have to rush to make it to the concert.
I have been going to Little Savannah for many years, and this was an atypical and awful evening...and we were bringing a friend who had evacuated from Hurricane Irma, so the experience was embarrassing on top of everything else. The waitress didn't know how to properly open a bottle of wine, we waited over an hour for our appetizers, and equally as long for the entrees. She never came to check on us except when serving the food, never offered an apology for the delay in the food. She got the orders mixed up, and at the end when we were paying the bill, got the tickets mixed (wrong items despite us telling her we would help her split the bill). It was painful. And as we were getting our tickets, the owner came over to finally apologize and offer a free desert. it was too little too late. We just wanted to get out.....it all took place over 3 1/2 hours! The food was good, just not worth the agonies of the poor service.
We found Little Savannah to have friendly service that promptly honored our reservation time. The place is very small. We felt cramped on the bench seating between two other couples. The noise level was loud and nearly made it impossible to have a conversation, much less a private one. If you can enjoy dining with strangers and have no romantic conversations planned, you can get some seriously good food here. We enjoyed crab claws marinated for an appetizer. The wedge salad was delicious with the homemade blue cheese. Our entree, braised pork needed some salt, but the sides were exceptional and the plating was beautiful. The coffee is AMAZING! Even the decaf. We finished off our meal with a creamy chocolate mousse.
We had a great time. I've gone to this restaurant before and it wasn't my favorite. Happy I tried it again though. They have spruced up the entrance and the bar area. The dining room leaves a little to be desired but the quality of the food made up for that. We had great appetizers and the entrees were delicious. The chef came out to speak to us and told us all about the local farmers and farm to table use for their current vegetable choices. Try the Spicy Shrimp and Chicken Pasta, Fried Okra (whole) 😉 and the Fried Oysters. Everything was seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection! Yummy...We will return!
There is nothing more comfortable than the patio in nice weather. The food and service are wonderful, but what is really special is the easy atmosphere. it is fine to drink, talk and eat in a leisurely fashion, nobody brings a check or makes you feel like they are eager for you to give up the table. The place may not be as fancy as some , but the food is equal to any of the other fine dining in Birmingham.
This place was insanely over priced for the quality of food. I love fine dining but I was highly unsatisfied with all 3 meals I ordered. I would not recommend. Also, it took an hour and a half for our food to come out, and we didn't even order any meat. Sitting there for that long was miserable. I have no idea why this place came so highly recommended but I would not recommend it to anyone.
