I am furious over our experience at Line and Lariat, and I don't know whether to be more mad at the restaurant or Open Table. A full month ahead of time, I made a reservation at Line and Lariat for Easter lunch or brunch when we couldn't get a table at our usual Brennan's or Brenner's. When you check this restaurant on Open Table, the dinner menu comes up, and it looks pretty interesting--lots of Texas seafood. The pictures of the place looked pretty online, so we thought, "Why not?" Understand that Easter brunch is a big deal to us--we like to splurge and have a really nice meal, especially when we have our grandson with us, which we did. I even mentioned on our reservation that it was for Easter brunch. So, we show up at the appointed time after church, and the place looks absolutely deserted. Finally a waiter showed up and we told him we had a reservation. He said there were no managers and they took no reservations, and furthermore, there was no Easter brunch or lunch other than the very limited normal lunch menu. Bless his heart--he could see we were confused and upset, and scooted two tables together (still adorned with last night's crumbs!). He made me a mimosa himself since there was no bartender, and I needed one! At this point, it was past one--we were all hungry, and there was little chance of getting a meal anywhere else. My grandson and I had a bowl of chili and everyone else had grilled cheese and tomato soup for Easter brunch. We might as well have gone to a coffee shop. We're not shallow enough to think this was the end of the world, but we were sadly misled. Why does Open Table take reservations for Easter brunch for this place if the restaurant had no plans to have an Easter brunch?
FURTHERMORE, I accidentally "favorited" this place and now I can't "unfavor" it! Bad experience all around.
I would not recommend the restaurant for anything. After I booked I read the reviews and was disappointed as we have stayed at the hotel several times, just never eaten there and thought the restaurant was in basement, we got there and it is an extension of the bar. We were there for almost 2 hours and there was NOT 1 other guest there, just my husband and I and after we were served we never saw waiter or actually he may have been the host never came back.
The food was good, but extremely overpriced for what we received. Plate of grits and 4 small pieces of beef tenderloin for $43. My husband ordered the fish which was very fishy tasting and if someone had come to wait on us, we would have returned it. Terrible evening out on our anniversary!!
The problem with this restaurant had nothing to do with the food! Actually, the food was pretty decent, my family and I could just not enjoy it because of the lack of attention and horrible service from the staff! I get we were staying in the hotel and had a comp breakfast, but we were prepared to leave a generous tip for great service and possibly order drinks from the bar. The servers and staff could not be bothered with us and there were only two other tables in the restaurant for Sunday brunch! We went to order omelettes at the breakfast buffet and as we walked up we were told they wouldn't serve us because they were already breaking down. After much discussion, they finally agreed to make the omelettes in the kitchen for us.
Fantastic experience at Line and Lariat. Four of us had a late dinner on Tuesday night. Service was very attentive. Great mojito and Manhattan. Tenderloin dish got rave reviews from my husband. Red snapper was heavenly too. Our guests from NYC commented on the beauty of the setting and the gorgeous lobby of the Hotel Icon and the dining area. Quiet, easy to have a private conversation, but lively too and lots of space between the tables. Comfortable, great food, great service, beautiful historic building, subdued lighting with no headache-y glare, no loud music. In a word, PERFECT. We'll be back! Ann Cook
The restaurant was not staffed appropriately which was reflected in the service. The food was good and ambiance was lovely.

This historic gem in the heart of Downtown Houston is a former bank and the original vault sits in the lobby of the hotel, talk about a welcoming wow factor! From the moment you arrive you feel immersed in historic nostalgia. The luxurious look and feel of the lobby, bar, and restaurant Line & Lariat make you feel like you've traveled to a 5 star hotel in New York City or even Paris. Once sat and warmly greeted, the bountiful Texas-sized servings started to arrive at the table. From presentation to taste everything was beyond 5 stars. Do not pass up the craft cocktails at Line & Lariat! The Key to the vault is the signature cocktail and it’s almost too pretty to drink, but after your first sip, you’ll be convinced you have to drink it. I have been back to the L&L bar a few times just for cocktails before a Rockets game and business lunches. Truly a gem in the heart of downtown Houston that will impress your colleagues, date, or guests. Enjoy!
Really like the salad card at lunch. Server seemed bothered we were there. Not attentive at all.
I have Been to this restaurant many times and this time was a huge dissapointment my friend and i went there last year for breakfast and it was wonderful. This time it was not. The room smelled like varnish as they had been working on the floors. It was very profound The buffet was awful and 1/4 of the size. When I inquired they cut it down for the holidays. What? The price wasn’t cut. The service was also really bad. I’m not sure I’d go back. This is the first bad review I’ve written. Awful
set in a lovely room that once was a bank, with the vault door on display - the Hotel Icon's restaurant Line & Lariat is Texan themed. Food was very good (salmon, redfish, meatloaf) and wine reasonably priced. Décor is delightful and atmosphere very quiet compared to the Main St chaos on a Saturday night. Sunday night was even quieter with only one staff on bar and dining room - he did an admirable job but was really worked. Parking block next door $10 - and valet parking at Hotel available $?
Always fresh and delicious! Noise level always a minimal. Service is excellent.
We arrived at 6:02pm for our 6:00pm reservation. There was no one at the hostess stand and not one waiter in the place. We waited until 6:17 and still no one showed. The hotel concierge was rude and not interested that no one was in the restaurant. So we went to the bar and ate there. Ed the bar tender was great! I’d skip the restaurant and hit the bar from now on.
THE SERVICE WAS VERY GOOD. THE FOOD WAS VERY GOOD ALSO WITH VERY DECENT PORTIONS.
Very limited menu - even though we could not get reservations at the time we requested, the restaurant was EMPTY - only 1 other table occupied!
Rolls were awful - obviously placed in microwave to warm up and were so tough they could not be bitten!
Food was so-so - certainly nothing to recommend.
The dining room in the beautiful old world bank interior glowed with lots of gold leaf embellishments. Food was very good and service was excellent. Would dine here again.
The Line & Lariat was good. It had the trappings of a hotel restaurant however-- an overly formal dining room, too quiet and therefore too much awareness of the conversations at adjacent tables, and a relatively safe menu.
The meal was well-prepared, and was welcome to save me the trouble of going out during my stay at the hotel.
My wife, one of our friends and I had a very pleasant dinner at Line & Lariat before the symphony. Our friend had just a Cobb salad but it was a dinner sized portion and he enjoyed it. My wife had a cup of chicken tortilla soup and I the gumbo. We then split the redfish entree. All were tasty and prepared properly with fish cooked just right; they also served our split entree on two plates.
Great service and delicious food. Environment is a please open area.
Made Mother's day reservation for the brunch...arrived with mom excited, valet parked, walked in and they had CANCELED THE MOTHER'S DAY BRUNCH due to low reservations. I never received a call. I was LIVID AND EMBARRASSED. The waiter Tilman and the Front desk manager was our saving grace. That's why I rated the service. They help make situation better by giving us grilled chicken and turkey wrap with dessert. Hotel Icon has changed. New ownership and it's horrible. The entire spirit has changed. Used to be one of the top hotels in Houston....that is of the past. Never again!!!!
Our server was very nice, I felt bad for him since he can't be making very much money as there were only a few tables in the whole restaurant and when we went there was only one other table occupied.
We read really good reviews and had high hopes however we were worried as soon as the stale bread came out. The menu was very small and we wanted to try the cheese plate, a staple of ours for fancy date nights. We got it and the grapes looked amazing, the pita bread was warm but also not fresh-likely from a bag and the cheese left a LOT to be desired. The portion was large but each of the three cheeses were indistinguishable. Each was nearly the same texture and was not good quality. We had planned to order the sliders but decided to leave early and go to another restaurant. We spent nearly $30 on one glass of okay wine and a horrible cheese plate.
I would not recommend this restaurant when there are so many incredible places in Houston at around the same price point, serving the same style cuisine with FAR FAR superior food.
The waiter didn't seem to be normally a waiter. Barely spoke two words to us. Food was good for a fair price. Restaurant was very empty for being in the more active areas of Houston.
We had Easter brunch at the Icon hotel several years ago; I am afraid this year's brunch was rather disappointing.
The dining room is nice, but was not decorated with any flowers or Easter décor. The buffet was too high for the kids (although found this place on a top 10 kid friendly brunch list) and did not offer plain waffles or pancakes. The waffles were mixed in with jalapenos and the kids did not want to eat them. The website had promised an Easter bunny, but none appeared. The price was expensive for the quality and variety of food offered.
Food was excellent, brussel sprouts were just amazing. We actually ordered seconds as everyone at the table devoured them.
We want to go back to try the breakfast. I wished they could serve breakfast all day. There were a gnat or two flying around. The view was nice. This was our first visit.
This was a pre-theater meal on Sunday afternoon. Restaurant is in a hotel lobby, but don't let that scare you off. The food and service were very good. Portions were large. Each course was large enough to be the meal. We will go back and eat here for dinner.
Husband and I stayed in Hotel Icon 8 or so years ago and loved lunch at the L&L which was a lovely nouvelle cuisine, very elegantly and well done. The restaurant has gone waaaayy downscale now to have just a few sandwiches, soup and salad. Big disappointment. We will not be going back.
Really enjoyed the meal had the special and wasnt disappointed. The bar tender Hurbert has a real wealth of information about the downtown scene.
Read some great reviews on this restaurant...but it is nothing to write home about...tables are essentially in the lobby of a hotel. Our table was the only table ocupied when we arrived and only two others by the time we left. If I was staying at the hotel I might eat here...but otherwise no.
Steak was not as tender as would have liked, but overall the meal was excellent
Quite disappoitnig despite the fact it was in the top list of resto's in Houston. Would not recommend it. Slow service (despite almost nobody there) and quite plain food.
Not going back. Quiet because no one was there. It was Easter and we went after a play. Early dinner. Maybe bad timing. Weren't impressed.
Ambience is simply amazing, as the Restaurant is set in Historic 1911 Union National Bank with marble columns and the original vault still intact. The bartender started me off with a fresh twist on French 75, one of my favorites! Enjoyed the filet mignon which was cooked to perfection, along with caprese salad, and mouth watering chocolate mousse cake. The wine recommend was superb! My first time and I will definitely be returning!!
Line and Lariat again gave us what we bargained for. We sometimes want a quiet, elegant place as opposed to popular bustling hot spots. Of course the food must be good but we'll settle for less than the latest and greatest to get other amenities. Line and Lariat consistently delivers.
Brought a friend here to show him a Texas restaurant. It was just a plain old place to eat. Nothing special. The food was good, but nothing special that you could not find at 200 other places in Houston. It was almost empty in the place, and I can see why.
We stay at the Hotel Icon 6-9 times a year for opera weekends or to attend the ballet. We've always been pleased with our meals there...breakfast, lunch or dinner. This experience was great. We especially enjoyed our gumbo.
The food was well prepared, but the service was distinctly second-rate. The waiter obviously knew nothing about wine and appeared bewildered when asked a few basic questions. Set in a very large lobby, the ambiance is anything but intimate. But it has a great-looking bar. I'd recommend this restaurant, but not too enthusiastically.
I am in Houston once a year on business and I always make sure I eat at Line & Lariat. Truly delicious and interesting food, beautiful decor in an old bank, and never crowded or loud.
My husband and I have been here 4 times. The first time was during Restaurant Week a few years ago . The restaurant was relatively busy and food was good. We've gone back and consistently enjoyed our meals. Our other visits have been much less crowded. We love the ambiance and decor.
Only criticism on the food is that it's sometimes over sauced (too much dressing on the salad, too much sauce on the steak). If that bothers you, I recommend just having it served on the side.
Each year my wife and I have dine here before attending Houston Ballet's The Nutcracker. We love the ambiance, the wait staff is wonderful, and their steaks are cooked to perfection. We can't wait to dine here again next year.
