Our parking lot is located on the corner of East Washington and Webster Street, behind the American Exchange Bank. L'Etoile is known as one of Madison's fanciest restaurants. High class atmosphere, high prices, excellent service, unique flavors, and small portions. My wife and I always wanted to try it once. With that box checked, it seems unlikely we'll go again. We enjoyed the flavors and the service, but we can get comparably delicious gourmet food on the next block for half the price. My wife mentioned she felt a little out of place in the stiff atmosphere, and neither of us were full when we left. I think L'Etoile is helping to drive the Madison food scene, but they're serving a very specific clientele.
We chose the tasting menu with the wine pairings and were quite impressed. Not only was each dish delicious and creative, but the portions were a good size. The high ceiling of the restaurant must keep the noise level down because it was very pleasant. Each member of the staff was knowledgable about the food being served. All in all a very nice evening.
Great Food and Service, excellent atmosphere, almost at the level of a French Michelin restaurant and more accommodating to dietary restrictions. The amuse bouche was extraordinary, the snapper very good though I found the flavors a little confused, rabbit appetizer outstanding...I will return.
We love a tasting menu, but oh lord, the food. Course after course of chewy, tasteless, almost raw meat. Almost no vegetables, other than the sulfurous brownish Brussels sprouts and a few other mushy root vegetables. One type of bread, a good roll. Absolutely delicious rose grapefruit sherbet. We enjoyed the beautiful view of the capitol and the good wine, but an expensive disappointment otherwise.
It was wonderful! Thank you for the attention, service, kindness and experience. My favorite was the champagne and wine recommendations. My only negative was the toughness of the rabbit that I had. It was really not edible and quite tough through no fault of anyone. It was a wonderful birthday with my favorite person of 43 years, my husband.

The tasting menu was inventive and seasonal. Wine pairings were well chosen and thoughtfully presented. There was one small hiccup when the wine pairing for a particular course was not brought out on time, but the other servers rushed to bring it when they realized it had been forgotten. Altogether it was a memorable meal in a lovely venue with attentive, yet comfortable, service.
I went to L'Etoile by myself. The service felt a little cold and while I felt welcome, I didn't feel completely wanted or appreciated. Thank you for refilling my water a lot, that was very nice. The quail was by far the best dish. The portion sizes were perfect. Not too much food yet I left feeling full. The drinks were fantastic, the orange peel in the cider was genius. Thank you for a very fine evening. I think that if I were to come back, it would be for a very special occasion and with my family so that I could drink.
We had a splendid meal; excellent food, great service. We were not hungry enough to try the tempting tasting menu, but we did very well with the a la carte menu. The individual items in the appetizer of duck confit were each succulent (preserved lemon, black garlic, sunchokes), and combined well together. Our diner who ordered the mushrooms and escargots was equally impressed. For entrees, two of us had the guinea hen and one the red snapper - again both beautifully prepared and very tasty. For dessert, the hickory nut cake with Seckel pears was up to the standard of previous courses, but the apple cider donut was a slight disappointment. Wines by the glass were good. A superior dining experience. We will come back when we again visit Madison.
By far the best gourmet food in Madison. Prices commensurate with urban fine dining in other cities. Frank and the other waitstaff made the experience truly wonderful and memorable. We received excellent attention (and education) from the very well informed sommelier even though we chose the less expensive wine pairing. This is our go to restaurant when looking for a true fine dining restaurant in Madison.
Absolutely exquisite! The food is hard to describe. Every dish is well thought out, cooked perfectly, and the ingredients blend together so well. The dessert was heaven on a plate. Wonderful, attentive service. It is expensive. So what! You get what you pay for. We could actually sit at a table and converse in a normal tone of voice and hear the background music. I am so tired of having to put my mouth inches from my husband's ear and yelling in order to be heard over the din of so many restaurants. Take your time, enjoy the meal. And leave the poorly behaved kids at home. This is not the restaurant for them.
The food was creative and tasty, but really skimpy. We ordered a small course, a large course and the wine pairing. Service was the best, view of the capitol was wonderful, atmosphere was great. But the size of the portions was teeny weeny. A "pear" the size of a big grape, and they only served half of it. I had the octopus small course - only a couple of small pieces of octopus. Then the langoustine main entry - about 2 shrimp, 2 scallops, the smallest slivers of "Norway lobster" you can imagine, and some veggies. Artfully arranged on the plate, but I would like enough food so that I don't leave hungry! Plenty of wine - more than I usually drink. And the dessert was similarly delicious but tiny. I went home and had to eat again before I went to sleep.
3 of us spent 3 hours sharing one skate entree, one 7 course chef's tasting menu, plus two extra desserts. Everything was truly divine, a real culinary adventure. Loved attending to every ingredient and reading the farm source list. This is not a pre-theater event. This is the theater event, and should be savored for every minute and every bite. A high art happening. We all loved the whole experience. We are two seniors, and one 18 year old adventure seeker, who was as thrilled as we were.
L'Etoile is the perfect place to celebrate a special event - we just went for my 50th birthday. The service, food and overall experience is always several notches ahead of any other restaurant in town. Always.
We went with the tasting menu and it was worth it - every course was delicious. We skipped the wine pairing but instead took the server's recommendation for a wine that would work with the menu and it was fantastic.
