Our overall experience was wonderful- my beef short ribs appetizer was quite salty too my sea bass entree was fabulous. My partner had clams and pork appetizer which he loved and the he had the pork belly entree which he also loved . The desserts were amazing. especially the deconstructed cheesecake!! Service was fabulous - all very expensive but great for a special occasion!
Visited from out of town. Am a total foodie so wanted to check this place out. Amazing food, service is great, just manager is NOT nice &/or personable. He seemed very pompous & had an attitude. I was nice but wanted to say more...too bad he’s in charge as he should be more cognizant of his demeanor & how he treats others. I was professional & even gave compliments of food, service & he was snobby. Too bad!:(
My wife’s birthday. The food was fantastic and the staff made it special.
An expensive night out but well worth the investment every once and a while.
Very well informed wait staff with just the right level of attentiveness to personal service.
Excellent wine list and a choice of entrees or an intriguing tasting menu.
A fine night out in Madison.
Fantastic experience from beginning to end. The wine list, knowledge of food and wine and the amazing views are unmatched !!!
We chose to select our own 3-course meal from the menu. Each plate was an amazing variety of complementary tastes and textures. The simple carrot was elevated to an art form, as were the more exotic ingredients such as lamb belly and salsify. They gave us special treatment for our 25th wedding anniversary, but I observed a nearby table getting attentive care for a casual gathering, too. Three courses and a glass of wine were around $100 pp, not extreme given how special this meal was.
L' Etoile's dining experience is lovely. The atmosphere is beautiful, the service attentive, and the food delightful. I would definitely recommend.
Excellent service and atmosphere. Food is ok.
Staff was very attentive. Food was excellent! Would highly recommend the fish!
No surprises. We came for the food and service and were not disappointed. The food was delicious, the service was excellent and our table next to the window with a view of the capital was a perfect way to celebrate a birthday. We did the tasting menu with wine pairing, and each course came with a thorough explanation of the dish and a lot of history about each wine. I had the octopus and NY Strip which was cooked perfectly. Initially, I thought the portion of meat was small, but when eaten with the veggies, and other accompaniments it was just the right size. You get what you pay for, and you will pay for it! We knew this going in, and will continue to go for special occasions.
My wife and I had never dined at L'Etoile and after receiving a gift certificate to the restaurant that provided us with an additional incentive to dine there. We both had the Black Bass as our entrée and we both agreed the meals were delicious. The service was very good and the wine list was deep and one of the best I've ever seen. However, there was one thing that puzzled us and that was the lack of vegetables on the menu. There wasn't a salad listed on the menu as a first course option but after asking if that was an option we were pleased to find out it was so we both ordered one. When the entrée arrived the only vegetable provided with the entrée were very small spring onions and even though they were very good we felt another vegetable may have enhanced the meal. Having said that we both felt the meals were outstanding and the next time we're celebrating a special occasion L'Etoile will be at the top of our list of restaurants to go to.
L'Etoile is always perfect. The food is prepared exquisitely. The entrees are enhanced by careful selection of accompanying vegetables, spices, and perfect sauces. The meal is not rushed and you have a nice amount of time to savor each course. Nancy, our server, was superb. Madison is fortunate to have such a classy restaurant.
Rushed service. Decent food, however, not refined; every sauce had the same starchy consistency.
Overpriced, not a good value!
What an amazing meal. My husband and I had the chef tasting menu, which included seven courses and it included some of the best food I've ever had. We ate at an Asian-fusion French restaurant in Paris in September and also had their tasting menu and this was just as good as high-end Parisian food, if not better. The intensity of the flavors in each dish is what I remember most. Every ingredient in each dish was there for a reason and I could taste and appreciate everything. The tasting menu with wine pairings for two was pricey and I wasn't "full" at the end of the meal, but I was more than satisfied. The experience of tasting such incredible food combinations was well worth it!
Always delivers, never disappoints. Creative and unexpected combinations that are a delight to consume. Have been dining at this restaurant since it’s inception years ago. It has maintained quality standards consistently through smooth transitions with changing owners and chefs.
Valentine's Day. Food, service, ambience all excellent.
I have been enjoying L'Etoile for many years. It is one of my favorite restaurants. I only wish I could affoed it more often.
Did the 7 coarse meal. Was fantastic. The server's were very knowledgeable and explained food very well
Had another spectacular dinner at this amazing restaurant!!
30s across on FOOD/DECOR/SERVICE from the(previously) insightful Zagat rating system
Absolutely wonderful! We each had three courses and all were perfect. Especially noteworthy were the first course pork belly and the New York strip steak entrees. You can't miss with any of the desserts. And don't miss out on the Poinsettia cocktail. It was wonderful. We especially appreciate being able to order a half bottle of very good French champagne. Michael, our server, was excellent, as he always is. My only complaint is not at all with the restaurant, but the appearance of some diners. This is a classy restaurant. Show some respect! No one is asking you to wear a suit and tie, but jeans and untucked flannel shirt shows disrespect to the restaurant and the atmosphere it provides.
Brilliant dinner--everything was even better than the menu description suggested. I could eat the quail small plate every day pretty much for the rest of my life. Only small tweak I'd suggest was to drop the popcorn in the black cod plate. It seemed, well, just silly. Nothing about it added to the flavor or texture, and it was bad popcorn besides. But if you are prepared to spend a good deal of money for an exquisite dinner, this is your place.
This restaurant was highly recommended and exceeded our expectations. We will definitely be returning!
Excellent food. Great service. Super romantic. I would definitely recommend to a friend.
We enjoyed the tasting menu with wine pairing. It was fantastic....inventive dishes, beautifully plated, well-timed service, and incredibly tasty. We enjoyed Owen almost as much as the view of the state Capitol dome.
Food is astonishingly good! Service could not be better. Each time I dine here, I leave delighted, amazed and looking forward to my return.
L'Etoile is known as one of Madison's fanciest restaurants. High class atmosphere, high prices, excellent service, unique flavors, and small portions. My wife and I always wanted to try it once. With that box checked, it seems unlikely we'll go again. We enjoyed the flavors and the service, but we can get comparably delicious gourmet food on the next block for half the price. My wife mentioned she felt a little out of place in the stiff atmosphere, and neither of us were full when we left. I think L'Etoile is helping to drive the Madison food scene, but they're serving a very specific clientele.
Exquisite meal -- my first time at the newer location and the open ambiance with view of the Capitol make this a go-to.
Excellent food and service. Not inexpensive, but you must try it at least once when living in Madison.
Great service and creative food with samples brought by the chef during your dining. I loved it and my 14 year old daughter loved it also. Great view, cocktails and food
Outstanding service. Perfectly balanced Sazerac with 7year rye. Impeccable timing. Everything on the plate was cooked to perfection. Our waiter was perfect.
Best restaurant in Madison. Creative, delicious food. The wait staff is extremely pleasant. By far my favorite place to eat out.
We chose the tasting menu with the wine pairings and were quite impressed. Not only was each dish delicious and creative, but the portions were a good size. The high ceiling of the restaurant must keep the noise level down because it was very pleasant. Each member of the staff was knowledgable about the food being served. All in all a very nice evening.
Great Food and Service, excellent atmosphere, almost at the level of a French Michelin restaurant and more accommodating to dietary restrictions. The amuse bouche was extraordinary, the snapper very good though I found the flavors a little confused, rabbit appetizer outstanding...I will return.
Service by our server and cocktail mixologist was amazing. Really went above and beyond. Fabulous creative food with an exceptional bend of flavors.
Can’t wait to go back!
Wonderful dining!! Great flavors on tasting menu. Wine menu by glass is very limited. Server was very efficient and knowledgeable about items served. Good for quiet conversation. One of my 3 favorite restaurants that I go to.
Extraordinary food; gracious service. A top ten meal.
We love a tasting menu, but oh lord, the food. Course after course of chewy, tasteless, almost raw meat. Almost no vegetables, other than the sulfurous brownish Brussels sprouts and a few other mushy root vegetables. One type of bread, a good roll. Absolutely delicious rose grapefruit sherbet. We enjoyed the beautiful view of the capitol and the good wine, but an expensive disappointment otherwise.
The salsify appetizer was amazing! Always well taken care of at L’Etoile.
It was wonderful! Thank you for the attention, service, kindness and experience. My favorite was the champagne and wine recommendations. My only negative was the toughness of the rabbit that I had. It was really not edible and quite tough through no fault of anyone. It was a wonderful birthday with my favorite person of 43 years, my husband.
Thank you Very much,
