L'Escargot - Carmel
I cant say enough about this great establishment the crew and food is the best in Carmel !!I cant say enough about the Chef Owner Unbelievably great !!! Its the kind of place you need to keep going back to enjoy !!
L’Escargot is a charming spot that turns out nicely presented and delicious classic French cuisine. We went the frog’s legs and escargot route and we’re not disappointed: delicious garlicky butter and lemon bathed both appetizers. The Prix Fixe menu had nice options and was a very good value for pricey Carmel. Main entree portions were generous (fantastic pommes de terre), and the wines offered by the glass offered a good variety of selections.
Always a quality dining experience. Delicious food with great service. That’s why we keep coming back
I must say I was a little disappointed. Partly my fault. I had heard such wonderful things about this place and being my birthday we decided to try it out. I did not think much of the ambience. I have traveled and eaten at many french restaurants all over the world. Nothing looked french to me. The lighting was horrible. It would have been nice if they had had some table lighting. They did have white tablecloths, the booth chairs were dusty. The restaurant was very hot, although it was a very warm night but I only saw one window open. I thought they would serve french bread, we got sourdough. I started with Pate. I did not like it. My bad choice ,. my wife loved her muscles. I orders steak frites for my entree. The steak was cooked to the right temp however it was as tough as old boots. Nobody came to our table to ask if we were enjoying entrees and (my fault) I never complained. I was offered a choice of two desserts ( they knew it was my birthday., we were greeted with wishes upon arrival ) I picked the lemon tart. It came with a candle :) The pastry crust tasted like fridge burn, like it was old and left in the fridge, yuck. When the bill arrived I was charged $11.95 for it. LOL. I did question that on the bill and they said the bill was correct. The restaurant was packed so may be it was just my bad luck. I think they need more table staff. I only ever saw one server and his assistant. I won't be going back.
We celebrated our first date (1995) with dinner at L’Escargot. My husband wore a sport coat as he believes in dressing up when we go to special restaurants. L’Escargot was quiet with excellent service. Both of our dinners were wonderful (Duck Confit for husband and Scallops for me, we ordered a lovely Pinot that the waiter was very excited about. We ordered dessert to go, the lemon tart. Oh, we also had your delicious French salad. It was an excellent dinner and a perfect way to celebrate our first date!
Great French Restaurant tucked away in Carmel. We had a wonderful evening here and cannot say enough about the food, setting and service. This restaurant is the real deal and worth it in every way. Loved the food Escargot of course was perfect in the traditional sauce but waiter recommended I do it in mushroom caps and really was good. Rack of Lamb was tender and done perfectly - sauce was also very nice. All around a real fine dining experience and we would make it our first choice if back in Carmel.
Service was great, food was outstanding
A great little find in Carmel. The chef has taken good care of preserving a tradition. Excellent food choices, wine and service.
A great spot for a quiet date night or special dinner. Escargot are great, so is the pork loin and roasted chicken. Best French im the Central. Coast.
Wonderful meal, our best in Carmel by far. Steak frites was to die for and the veal was great too.
Always a treat!
L'Escargot was a true dining experience. You cannot say that about many restaurants these days.
Thank you and we WILL be back!

The food as always was perfection ! Wait staff and owner always a delight.
I've lived in Carmel for 1 year and it's by far the best food in town. We give it A++ - as well the service is wonderful. I highly recommend L'Escargot
Went there for wife's birthday, so wanted a special experience and was not disappointed. From the moment we arrived the staff went out of their way for our every whim. When we arrived I was invited to choose the section of the restaurant we preferred, and got the best table for two in a quiet area. When we asked our waiter about wine choice, he said he had not personally tasted the selection of interest and immediately got advice from others on the staff -- and their recommendation was spot on.
All the food was outstanding, and special requests were responded to with enthusiasm. We discovered a hidden gem that we expect to return to.
Disappointed in our experience. The waiter was overly pretentious to start.
We had the sand dabs and their special beef Wellington. The fish was dry, over cooked. The Wellington was over cooked as well but the wine sauce was very nice. We didn’t ask the price of the special which was our mistake but it was 50% more than any other entree on the menu. Don’t order a special without asking the price. It wasn’t worth what charged. Overall experience will keep us from going back.
As always, perfect.
Delightful restaurant, excellent food and presentation. Pleasant ambiance, great service. Look forward to a return visit.
Great classic dishes and knowledgeable service set in a quiet and attractive small space. Escargot is offered several ways ( we had the classic version in the shell). An interesting and reasonably priced wine list. Our only disappointment was that rabbit was no longer offered due to a lack of sales. Salmon and the veal with mushrooms were perfectly prepared. A really nice evening in a town of great restaurants. Will certainly be back the next time we are in Carmel.
Great classic French in an out of the way Carmel setting. Don’t stay around as long as they have without quality.
The food, service, and ambience were all fantastic. The services provided by the professional management and staff are the main reasons that we keep coming back. The old world elegance is a rare thing, and we value their focus to make sure that everything about the dining experience is excellent. I highly recomend this restaurant.
Outstanding as always. Consistent no matter what event may be in town...
Grrreat food, I am a regular. You can actually have a Conversation over dinner.
Food is exceptional as always
This has to be one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. The food is amazing and the service is stellar. I cant wait to go back again.
Always good. Nice serving staff and delicious food every time.
Lovely food, service and ambiance! L'Escargot is a charming little place, tucked away from the street, and it is the perfect place to take your companion for a romantic dinner. We both had the beef wellington and it was fantastic! Our waiter was great and suggested a bottle of wine that we just loved. We will definitely be back!
My favorite place for dinner! Every time we are in town it’s a must! Food is delish! French onion soup and roasted chicken is my fav!
Hidden gem in Carmel.
Excellent prixe-fixe menu options at unheard-of value for Carmel, great service, quaint and intimate atmosphere. Will be back frequently.
This restaurant was spectacular. I had made a mental note to try it out last year and I was not disappointed. The most amazing dish was the veal sweetbreads in a wine cream truffle sauce. The ambiance was charming and our waiter was so sweet and helpful. I will be returning every chance I get when I return on my annual vacation to Carmel.
Enjoyed this place so much that I’ve booked another reservation.
Always outstanding! Lovely atmosphere. Friendly attentive servers.Food excellent!!
Loved our meal again .... scallops were outstanding
Butter lettuce salad delish, great sand dabs !
Simple and very thoughtful wine list was wonderful !
We will keep going back whenever we’re in town for sure.
L’eacargot is our special place for anniversaries and birthdays. It’s a small quaint French restaurant with fantastic food and a great selection of wine and drinks. the effort here is to be more classy than trendy. Make reservations. It’s almost impossible to walk in as seating is limited. The wait staff is also great and pay a lot attention to details.
The staff and food never disappoints us! We are regulars and will probably always be regulars. They are so kind and gracious. IE... they changed the topping on one entree...I asked if I they still had the previous topping and the answer was no problem... It is Carmels number one fine dining for locals. in 10 years never had one issue with any of the food. Put it on your bucket list!
Amazing food, one of the best dining experiences we have had. Really good
Enjoyable. A real French feel. Good specials for entrée and desert.
Really, the rating should be 3.5 overall. Did not meet our expectations. Service and ambiance were average. Food was good, but not outstanding. We had the salmon and duck, which were both flavorful and prepared correctly (not over cooked), but not really French or nouvelle French cuisine (in our opinion). Nice wine list.
While nice, we would probably not go again.
Was really excited to come here. Lamb chops were cooked perfectly. Escargot could have used a little salt. I added some at the table. Husband liked dish, though I can't recall what it was. Wine by the glass selection was large with good options. Service was adequately friendly, but absent at times and somewhat ambivalent toward us as they and the chef were too busy trying to accommodate some obnoxious doctor and his family at another table who wanted to plan a party. We were the only other ones there, so it wasn't very busy for a Saturday night. which surprised me. I think they cater more to an older early dining crowd.
Regulars. No matter where we go on the Monterey peninsula nothing compares to the food , ambiance, service and atmosphere. Priced appropriately for the area. Thank you for never serving a questionable meal in over 10 years.
