L'Escargot - Carmel
I’ve eaten at L’Escargo several times in the past and it’s consistently been one of the best restaurants in town. My most recent experience was strangely not up to par. The food really was unspectacular, the service was not timed very well, and the wine prices are bordering on abusive. $130 for a wine I buy regularly for $45-$50. It might have been an off night but sadly it’ll be awhile before I go back.
We went on a Tuesday and got nice table in a corner. Service was good. It was quiet enough for us to carry on a conversation. And the food was excellent. I had a great rack of lamb cooked just right that melted in my mouth. My husband had the scallops also very good. For dessert we had the creme brûlée presented in a very unique way served with fruits. Surprising light touch to the end of our dinner.
We celebrated Mother's Day a day early, to beat the rush. L'Escargot has been a go to for us for decades for an elegant, unpretentious meal. It is off the beaten track in Carmel, and has not fallen prey to the hip/upscale movement. The experience is absolutely delightful, and the food top quality. There is a very reasonable prix fixe menu that includes starter, entree and dessert. My wife had the sand dabs and I had the rack of lamb. It was panko crusted and was truly one of the most flavorful and succulent lamb dishes I have ever had.
Consistently excellent food and service. Off the beaten path and worth every penny!
When we initially arrived the entrance door was open and it was too cool to be comfortable. When I asked one of the servers to close the door, he did right away. Although a bit pricey, I enjoyed the evening, and so did my friends.
very interesting little restaurant. It seems to cater to a select crowd but I wouldn't necessarily say it has a greater quality than other restaurants that offer the same type of cuisine. The beef wellington was superb though and I've never had better. What I find surprising is that you cannot get a glass of french sparkling at this french restaurant but you can get one at one of the other fine restaurants in Carmel. The service needs to work on polishing their presentation, I'd expect to hear the specials right from the start so I can consider them before I look at the menu. Not after I've been served my drink and decided what to order. There are other restaurants that offer better service and better french food.
A tasteling delight. Food was truly memorable. The paired wines were outstanding. Only objection was - LOTS OF UPSELLING (better beef, special cheese tray... all that should fit within a bill for two of over $900, tip Included.
At first my guest and I thought the waiters were a little snooty, but as the evening passed they seemed more friendly. "Bowl of olives is the best dish". Loved it. Also, the waiter... gorgeous. Service was wonderful and the food was better. First time eating escargot and frog legs.
As always exceptional food and service. Best restaurant in Carmel
Wonderful service, food, ambiance. Overall an unforgettable experience!
L'Escargot is one of our favorite Carmel restaurants. I'd normally give it a 5 star rating. The only glitch was that the appetizer was brought to the table before we had finished our cocktail and then we had to ask for our wine. Given that, our waiter was very professional and took responsibility and apologized. The restaurant took the right steps with respect to our bill. The food was outstanding and the ambience was great. This is one our must go to restaurants when we visit Carmel.
The best food and service!
We eat at L’Escargot once or twice a month. Authentic country French, all from scratch. One night when we were leaving a looked in the kitchen and saw a massive pot on the stove. Was told they were cooking stock for 14 hours as the base for their sauces. What else do you need o know.
Best quality dining experience in Carmel.... no one else comes close. Absolutely fabulous. So lucky to have this in my little town.
But don’t tell anyone.... it might get too busy 🤣
Our first time and what a great first impression! The place is charming but not stuffy, food was fantastic, I had Scallops and Risotto and my husband had the duck. The server was patient but attentive. Definitely going back soon!!
Very good food, a little expensive for what it offers, but still worth it.
Just so so. Was sad wasn’t what i had hoped. Not as flavorful as would expect. Just ok. Not overly welcoming. Ambiance ok, nothing exciting
For starters, hubby & I shared a goat cheese tart and escargot. They were both good, but nothing extraudinary or imaginative. My husband had duck prepared 2 ways, which was perfect. I had the beef Wellington special, but there was nothing special about it. There were minimal duxelles & foe Gras, and meat itself although tender, was tasteless. The apple tart for dessert was quite good.
This had to be one of the most distasteful and unpleasant dining experiences we’ve encountered. Over two hundred dollars for a bowl of watery, plain mushroom soup, a fairly decent salad and beef Wellington that was a well done cut of old sour spoiled beef wrapped in a mushy pastry. No one in restaurant from the time we arrived until right before we left. That should of been a sign. Kitchen was talking loudly through our entire meal in Spanish with loud mexican station fighting the French music. Was there even a French trained chef on staff? Doubtful. This restaurant needs o be nominated for a Gordon Ramsey spanking or close its doors entirely. Disappointed with Open Table for allowing this restaurant to list.
My wife and I were celebrating her birthday in Carmel and we were looking for French bistro meal íman intimate setting. We decided to try L’Escargot, and we weren’t disappointed! The service was attentive, the food was spectacular, and we will definitely return for more!
This would have been 5 stars across the board except that the waiter forgot to bring my salad. I never got a salad at all.
Had a wonderful Birthday dinner & evening.
Superb all around.
Service was excellent. Food overall great. Mushroom soup was tasty. Duck was perfectly cooked. Unfortunately the halibut was slightly over cooked. Will return again.
Really wonderful food and service, but that back room seemed very bare and barren. Do know we had a fun night and thanks for everything.
We have been to the restaurant before and it was excellent. This time it was ok. Bland vegetables , ok wine list. The entrees were very good. The service very good but the restaurant is getting tired looking .
Great French classics, Escargot, Sweetbreads, Frogs Legs, Medallions of Veal, wonderful service and calming, serene ambiance. Sounds like a winner to me. And on Wednesday nights, all wines are half price. Make your reservation early! We tried a very expensive bottle of wine that we would never have bought because it was so expensive, but at half price, we went for it. It was worth it!
Wonderful dinner. I had the mussels appetizer and they were absolutely delicious. The duck two ways as a main course was great. Confit leg and thigh and breast grilled medium rare. Wednesday is half off for wine by the bottle.
First, We had an exceptional waiter, Mat. The wine was excellent as was their selection.
We started with the mushroom caps filled with escargot & lots of garlic.
We ordered their flambé fish that is prepared in part table side by Mat. It was a lot of fun to watch him prepare the fish.
We enjoyed a delicious cappuccino without dessert of ice cream with a raspberry coulis.
Wonderful decor & ambience for a romantic dinner for us.
Great food and the fantastic service. Top notch would go back for sure!
Great experience. Our server Lance was awesome and cute
I have been there more than once and the factors are consistent: Great service, great food and excellent chef. My favorite is the Escargot appetizer. Prepared just like the best in France I have eaten. Both fish and meat main courses are cooked just right and perfect size portions. Try the Crème Brulee with a Cappuccino.
We had a lovely anniversary dinner with Sean as our server. He has been our server before and is an absolute delight. The food, as always, was impeccable. We had a pate as an appetizer that was a perfect French country interpretation. My partner had the mushroom soup special, which was creamy and smooth without dairy in it. I had the salad with pears. The pears were crisp yet tender and the salad was lightly dressed and had a good blue cheese on it. I had the rack of lamb special which was done just right with just enough pink in the meat. The potatoes were slightly crispy around the edges, which I loved. The vegetables were a bit underdone, which was the only drawback. My partner had the duck breast which he said was succulent with a crisp skin. For dessert, I had the chocolate torte—very, very chocolaty—and my partner had the lemon chèvre cheesecake, a unique concept and very tasty. The wine list is small but good, although a bit pricy. All in all, a very good French meal!!!
Ambience (Parisian cafe), professional, charming waiter (Sean), food (halibut, sand dabs) excellent...a lovely evening...will go back again when in town.
We love this restaurant. The food is great and the atmosphere is cozy and intimate. We choose L'Escargot for special occasions because we always have a great dining experience. I highly recommend L'Escargot!!!
World class food, best dinner we had in Carmel. Endive and apple salad, superb lamp chops, excellent halibut. All fresh, excellently prepared and presented. Service was excellent, with knowledgeable and helpful waitstaff. Excellent wines. Apple tart and warm brownies with ice cream for desserts.
Intimate restaurant near 4th and Mission, Carmel by the Sea. We went for a special Valentine Day dinner and enjoyed the experience. The staff was attentive and courteous. CAUTION there is limited parking in the Area, possibly one block away on Carpenter and 4th Avenue.
Valentine’s Day, everything was perfect! Food and service were excellent. We both had beef Wellington and it was superb.... Romantic place, very quaint and cozy, highly recommended!
Tried this restaurant for the first time after dining in town several times. It’s a bit off the Main Street where most dining can be found, but has been around longer than most. Excellent French food preparation which is one of our favorites anyway. Everything we had was prepared well, and the service was very attentive. Extensive wine list also, however we took advantage of their Wednesday 50% off bottle selection and were not disappointed. Will dine again when we return!
They were not crowded, however service slow and waiter not friendly. Food was fair but over priced and the wines over priced.
Great dining experience for those who focus on quality and service
