Lemaire at The Jefferson Hotel Ratings and Reviews
Hotel dining has almost died out in the US and in many other countries due to the proliferation of so many fine restaurants in cities. In general, the restaurants in city hotels have been relegated to aging dowagers in various states of disrepair and seediness, frequented mostly by nostalgic old-timers. Lemaire, situated in arguably the finest hotel in Richmond, the lovingly restored Jefferson is extraordinary in many regards. The public rooms including the dining room are at their neoclassical best featuring the extraordinary workmanship of a past era. This alone would almost be enough, but the restaurant really surpasses expectations by serving truly excellent and creatively prepared dishes like the three luscious scallops suspended in a broth containing shrimp and vegetable puree. It seems that you cannot miss with anything with the Chef's skill and love coming through. The wine selection offers a broad choice of styles and prices with many reasonable priced bottles and glasses. Service was thoroughly professional, non-intrusive, helpful and efficient. This may be the only hotel restaurant that I am aware of that is worthy of a journey rather than the default place to eat during inclement weather.
Our anniversary dinner at Lemaire was wonderful!! Lemaire never disappoints. Our usual table wasn’t available due to a private party, but the table reserved for us was even better. Our server even arranged to have a bottle of champagne that our friends dropped off taken up to our room and chilled for after dinner. We look forward to many more wonderful evenings at The Jefferson and Lemaire!
Love that it is quiet and you can talk in a normal voice! Service and atmosphere were perfect for our anniversary dinner. Menu choices were so so, nothing too exciting. Food was prepared well with very nice garnishes, accompaniments! Only bad was I had the special, Kobe beef, and it was stringy, with unchewable fibers! Nothing like the Kobe I've had before.
celebrated my birthday at Lemaire. I am gluten free and appreciate the numerous selections available and some can be modified. The service was attentive without being over bearing. The food portions were just right, beautifully presented and delicious. I like the smaller dining rooms that provide a quieter atmosphere for conversation.
Overjoyed is the word that describes our feelings when we entered the hotel and saw that the seasonal decorations were still surrounding us as we waited for our table. We purposefully arrived two hours early to enjoy hot chocolate and the ambiance that is the Jefferson Hotel. When it was time for dinner, we were seated by the fireplace and enjoyed an exquisite meal! This is our favorite restaurant for celebrating our anniversary.
Magnificent and atmospheric dining venue and bar in a beautifully decorated hotel. Pre-prandial drinks at a cozy and comfortable bar and then dinner in one of the restaurant's small dining room with fireplace. The food is well-conceived and prepared and served by waiters knowledgeable about the dishes and their ingredients. A fine time!
I know it was New Year's Eve and expectations should be moderated, but this experience was a lot less enjoyable than we had anticipated. Service was extremely slow. We sat in the bar area and there was no heat. (The tiny space heater on the floor was laughable.) The food was just OK. Although the hotel was beautifully decorated for the holidays, our dining experience was barely festive. We left as soon as we could just to get someplace warm.
We have been coming to Lemaire for special occasions for years, and it is always the best. Fabulous food, perfect service, and a romantic ambience in a gorgeous historic space. During the holidays Lemaire and The Jefferson are magical with beautiful decorations to delight young and old. We look forward to our next “occasion “ to enjoy the uniquely Richmond and very special experience of Lemaire!
Great dinner experience; room was beautiful and table was the best with outside view so you could see the beautiful Christmas lights. Quiet so you did not have to shout your conversation to each other. The server, Mark, was very professional and very knowledgeable of the menu items and answered questions and made recommendations when asked. The food we ordered was surprisingly very good. I have had previous meals that did not meet my expectations, our food was cooked to perfection. We took a tour of the beautiful decorated hotel and was truly impressed with the Airplane Ginger Bread display and all of the other decorations throughout the hotel. We will be back and hope to try the Sunday Brunch the next time visit. Thank you and the Jefferson staff; a very nice beginning to bringing in the New Year.
As has been our Christmas tradition for the past several years, my husband and I took my family to Lemaire for dinner on December 23rd during our visit to Virginia. My request for the circular table in the library was granted (we had 5:30 reservations) and Shawn provided expert service. All appetizers, entrees (5 had the beef tenderloin and I had the lamb shank), and desserts were delicious. While food choices are pricey (but fair for the quality and quantity), bottles of wine are more reasonably priced than usual for an upscale restaurant. For an overall top notch experience in terms of food, service and atmosphere, it would be difficult to find a better option than Lemaire.
We enjoyed the restaurant and our stay at the hotel. Food was fresh and well presented. Some of the dishes have too many ingredients and simple would be better. The cherry torte was too dense for my tastes. Dishes should be less salty. Overall, a great experience with wonderful fresh vegetables and fish and seafood.
They have set up a bar/lounge in the entry to Lemaire. The result was a gaunlet to navigate and in the adjoining room where our table for two was situated, the noise level from the holiday after-work gatherings prevented having a romantic setting for a 50th anniversary dinner. The food, service and grand architecture of the Jefferson was everything it has been for many prior visits and dining experiences. Like many places, it ain't what it used to be except for being expensive. That remains in place.
We had steaks, rockfish, and salmon. All were cooked as requested and were delicious; as were the sides. Desserts were all very well done. Dinner was pricey, of course, but not a bad value when considering the quality of the food. Notably, the restaurant is nearly overwhelmingly loud on entry - the bar area - such that you can hardly be heard; the dining areas, though, were only moderately noisy. Too bad the restaurant is configured in such a way as to potentially drive away some diners.
It is always a treat to eat here, especially during the holidays. The Christmas decorations never fail to impress; the gingerbread Santa's airplane was very cute this year. Go a little early for a drink under the Christmas tree. We like the recent change to organic and locally sourced food, along with the selection of yummy small plates.
The food and service was outstanding. The Jumbo Lump Crab Cake appetizer and the Certified Angus Beef Tenderloin was fantastic. The ambiance was great and the service was great. Our waitress was very helpful selecting drinks and food. She also was very prompt without being intrusive. The noise level was also very good.
