Legume Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I dined here on Saturday night knowing very little about the place. Bottom line, we loved it. The food is delicious. Small menu but enough variety for all. Interesting preparation and fresh. Our server was very friendly but seemed to forget about us a few times although he quickly corrected. Overall the service gave off a relaxed atmosphere without being disinterested. The ambiance is modern, quiet and clean. Our first experience was a big hit. We’ll return.
This was our second time at Legume, the first being in April when we visited Pittsburgh for the first time (we live 3-1/2 hours away). It was even better this time than last, and that time the food was delicious. My husband and I shared a grilled carrot appetizer that was truly remarkable, with hickory nuts and a delicate maple yogurt sauce, and another appetizer of a very good lamb sausage. Our entrees were his, a chicken paprikash, and mine, a tempeh dish with Russian red kale and a light mushroom sauce (with lots of yummy mushrooms) atop a grain the name of which I cannot remember now. This may have been the very best vegetarian dish I've ever eaten. I also tried my husband's paprakash, which was quite tasty! We treated ourselves to a shared dessert of black walnut cake with vanilla ice cream and a light touch of salty caramel sauce, also absolutely delicious, and not at all heavy. Portion sizes were right on; I expected to have leftovers to take back to the hotel, but I cleaned my plate and left feeling full but not stuffed. This was definitely a memorable dining experience.
Our server, Duane, was superb. He was helpful, knowledgable about the dishes on the menu (no small achievement, as menus change often depending on what local ingredients are available), friendly, attentive, but not hovering. Very professional.
As I told my husband, were I on death row, I'd like to have Legume prepare my last meal -- perhaps a repeat of this one. If Duane could serve it, that would be a bonus.
Legume is easily the best place We have eaten in Pittsburgh in the past year. The shared dishes are delightful and entrees all were great — halibut, chicken, lamb pork dishes all week prepared and delicious. Service was friendly and professional. Great place.
Pros- knowledgeable wait staff who properly set expectations on certain dishes. She listened to what we liked and steered us in the right direction for our order. We found the meal to be creative and very flavorful. It was a night out to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the restaurant brought us complimentary champagne.
Cons- two somewhat minor items. Host seemed a bit put off by our request for a quiet spot in the restaurant. The window view was obstructed by exterior scaffolding.
Pepper jelly and goat cheese crostini is a must! The chocolate cake is to die for! The menu is small and changes frequently. The chef knows how to pair flavors to give you an excellent dining experience no matter what you choose to eat.
Have the roast half chicken. Wish I could replicate this delicious dish, crispy outside, tender inside. Liked our quiet table in a small side room! You can hear the conversation without the usual racket of noise in most restaurants. Service was excellent, authentic, and responsive without being overbearing.
We shared a bunch of small dishes -- the beef tartare was fresh, not overly spiced and just delicious, the pate was smoky and well accompanied by sour pickles and mustard, excellent butternut squash and mussel soup that was sweet, creamy, briny and spicy all at once. The radish and celery root salad was tasty and the kukurei turnip and pork belly dish was among our favorites. The rice crepe was the only dish that did not impress. Good service, excellent wine list, quiet setting, but the food... Overall VERY GOOD!
Have always enjoyed Legume though occasionally fond the menu options limiting.
The new fall menu for 2018 is exceptional with many interesting options. Could not try them all, but everything we did try was exceptional. The fried squid had a nicely balanced spice to it with pancetta accent. Mushroom appetizer stimulate an entirely new taste palette. Will definitely be going back frequently to try some of the dishes we missed.
Legume is our go-to spot as out of towners visiting our college student at Pitt. Within walking distance of both Pitt and CMU, the cuisine is far from regular. Thoughtful and inventive ingredients that change with the season. Raclette with grapes, smoked bluefish pate are stars among the starters. Legume introduced a small plates category which is a nod to vegetarians and more plant-based ingredients paired with house-made sausage. Fish entrees shined, as did the lamb. Knowledgeable wait-staff can guide you for wine pairings and don't skip dessert! We've dined here at least a dozen time and every experience was perfect!
have been to Legume many times, starting out when it was located in Regent Square, and always looked forward to dining there as it never let us down. Not sure what happened on the Thursday night we recently dined there, but service was so very disappointing. It took forever to get the waitress to the table to ask if we wanted drinks and then more time than necessary for those ordered drinks to reach the table. After ordering starters, another long time in making it to the table. But the worst part was to come when we ordered our entrees....we began to wonder if the orders ever reached the kitchen. And then once they finally made it to our table, the entrees had apparently been sitting and waiting for the waitress to pick up for delivery to the table because they were at best luke warm. It was a very busy night at the restaurant and we believe that perhaps the restaurant did not prepare for such a huge crowd and were understaffed. Giving Legume the benefit of doubt and being that we always, always enjoyed this restaurant thinking it was one of the best in the 'Burgh, we did not make a complaint that evening and we did not penalize our waitress by leaving a frugal tip. As we are hoping we hit the restaurant on just one of those crazy nights that happens to all of us, we would certainly return to the restaurant. BUT should we face the same situation next time around, we would have to check Legume off our list of restaurants deserving of repeat visits. Knowing the quality of service and attention to detail of service with our past visits, am sure we just picked a bad night for dining at Legume - that should never be the case for restaurants in a highly competitive business but in an imperfect world, who are we kidding, it happens. Next dining night at Legume will hopefully be filled with comments of praise on the service.
Delicious food but way to make a customer feel UNwelcome. Coming in to Pittsburgh from out of town, I had an 8pm reservation for 6, made more than 2 weeks in advance on Open Table. While on the plane the night before, I received a phone message asking me to confirm the reservation. Already a little weird, as I had not cancelled.... the next day I called and was unable to get through, but finally got a voicemail box and said No I would not be cancelling. When we arrived the next day at 750, a dismayed and ditzy employee told us our table was not ready. 15 minutes later, it still was not ready. Several people had been seated in the interim, but it was not until 8:10 that we were seated. With a view right into the kitchen from my seat (see attached photo). Just wish I could share a recording of the sound of clattering dishes and kitchen that we endured. Yes, the food was delicious. But who wants to start a $320 meal that way?!
Our favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh! Wonderful food and excellent service.
Legume exceeds our expectations every time! The attention to every detail combined with their amazing food, makes it truly special.
I love sharing this special place with friends and giving their gift certificates as Birthday, Anniversary, or even Wedding Presents.
Thank you for being such a wonderful gift to the Burgh!
Phenomenal!!! Truly this is a fantastic restaurant. We took out our friends as a thank you for their help at our wedding. The meal started with my wife and I splitting the squash and mussel soup; it was out of this world. Then we had the beef tartare; excellent. My friend and I both had the chicken breast, which I had had before and was blown away by and this time it was equally amazing. I don't think we had to wait 45 minutes for it to cook, which it warns on the menu. Our waitress said that they roast so many each evening and they had not yet exceeded that number for the 45 wait to kick in. I was drinking a cream ale with coffee flavor and it was excellent, but they were out by the next round, so I went with a brown ale. For dessert we got the lardacious pound cake and pavlova to split four ways. The pavlova is incredible. It was a perfect way to end the best meal I've had in a long long time. The prices are steeper than I can afford regularly, but for a special occasion this is a great experience.
