Left Bank Santana Row Ratings and Reviews
We made a reservation a week before and we made sure to arrive on time but had to wait 20 min to sit down. They then wanted to seat us in an outside extension room that was overheated and stuffy, so we asked to sit somewhere else, they refused and said it’s the assigned table for you. We asked to talk to the manager and yes he was able to accommodate us and he moved us. The service was very poor, they were overwhelmed with VDay. We ordered appetizers, one of them never showed up, dinner came so we asked to cancel it. We asked for bread twice when we sat down, and it never came! Over priced set menu and servers not trained to handle busy holiday celebrations! It was very unfortunate because it wasn’t only Valentine’s Day but our daughter’s 17th birthday, Won’t be going there again:(
I had really high expectations for this place. We ate here on V'day and most of our food was cold and bland. I ordered from the Prix Fix menu and my partner ordered from the regular menu. My lobster was cold and had zero seasoning. My partner's salmon was overcooked. The server was not very attentive and honestly treated us as if he did not want to be there. Everyone received a Rose except for us. We were so frustrated with the sub-par food and service that we did not bother to complain, paid for our food and left. We drove from Oakland to San Jose so this truly was a complete waste of our time. Maybe this was an "off" night!
The Open Table reservation process asks about special occasions, which we had filled out. No acknowledgment of the occasion, a crappy table that was absurdly dark, and general "you're not worthy" vibe from the hostess/seaters. Server was pretty good, food was fine. But I left with a bad taste in my mouth from the attitude.
I really like the Left Bank. I've had excellent meals there and great experiences. This past Sunday wasn't up to usual standards, but if nothing else, it was a lovely day and we had an outside table so it was a lot about location, location, location. This occasion was lunch with friends, one of whom came down from San Francisco to join us. The host was very kind in accommodating our request for an outside table. I get that it's first come, first serve, but on a sunny day they ought to open up the side section so more people get a chance to enjoy the ambience.
The food was spotty. My husband loved his pork hash and my friend's steak frites were perfect. Two of us had the ham cheese omelette. Mine was not great. The egg part was OK although not super hot by the time it reached me. But the ham was cold and the cheese hadn't melted at all. I don't like to fuss about food when I've brought guests so I let it go but it was disappointing. There's something about an omelette done well and I was looking forward to it.
There were other trivial glitches, but they add up: My husband ordered coffee but the server forgot. Then she brought a cup without a saucer. Also the coffee had been spilled all over the cup so it looked like a dirty dish out of the dishwasher. We had to ask for bread (in a French restaurant?!). All in all, the server was pleasant and willing to be helpful but seemed inexperienced. I still really like the Left Bank, and I'm sure I'll be back, but I hope this isn't a trend because that would be sad.
Like other restaurants I've been to in Santana Row, my wife and I found Left Bank to be overpriced for the value. The food itself was just ok, with no real sense from the servers that anything special was happening in the kitchen, though we still ended up with a bill well over $100 for 2 (with 3 cocktails, an app, and 2 entrees). The place was noisy, and the service was over-extended, so felt slow. If you go, make a reservation for outside if possible... it's less noisy, and the best thing about this spot is the people watching, which is a combination of fascinating and amusing.
If you're looking for wonderful French inspired food, I'd recommend looking elsewhere... come here for the people watching and convenient dinner options before a movie, as long as you don't mind spending more than you should...
Loved going here on a special family day. First, it’s a lovely French restaurant with sophisticated wait staff and excellent decor. Food was simple and delicious. We ordered sandwiches and salad. The bread was crunchy and my eggs were covered in tangy lemony sauce. The salad was lightly dressed crispy lettuce. My daughter had chicken from the kids menu and she was happy. We had pastry and ice cream covered with chocolate sauce such a generous portion enough for 3. Fun place to people. Great price, great value. We’ll go back there.
We made a reservation, checked in a few minutes early... and we’re still kept waiting 25min past our reservation time. When I went back to the hostess stand to see what was going on, she just said “Oh! We were just talking about you!” Um, cool, were you planning on seating us ever? Aside from that, the food was great. Our waiter seemed like he might have been new, as he didn’t seem to know a lot about the menu, but did go and find answers when he didn’t have them, which was nice. Overall it was a good meal, not sure I’m dying to go back but I also wouldn’t say no if someone suggested it.
I was disappointed overall and I don't recommend this restaurant. They have one chicken option on the menu and at 6:30 they were already out of it. Due to allergies my daughter in law could not substitute for anything but the French Onion soup. Our server was very friendly but service was very slow. It took 15 minutes to get our drinks. While waiting I went to the bar to order drinks. I ordered a Vodka Martini and the bartender didn't even ask what kind of Vodka, he just walked away and made the drink.
I think they are capitalizing on the fact that Santana Row is so popular that they won't lack for customers and not so concerned about their customers because they don't have to be.
Made a reservation for 5:30 so we could have dinner and walk over to catch a 7:00 movie. Showed up at 5:30, was seated at 5:40. The waiter was great, very nice guy and polite, but it took forever to get our food.
Drinks came quickly, the fondu came in a reasonable time too - which was excellent, one of my favorite things on the menu, but then something went wrong. We waited and waited and waited for our meal. It finally arrived at 6:45, giving us just a few min to eat and make the 5 min walk to the theater. We ended up missing the beginning of Star Wars, which was a bummer.
I've been here several times, and have always enjoyed the food and for the most part have good experiences, but this time they were off for some reason. Too bad.
Very disappointing experience. Arrived early for our reservation and we weren't seated until 20 minutes after our reservation time. After we were seated, it took an hour to get our appetizers. There were 4 of us and the meals came out in twos. One meal was served cold. The food was good, but I wouldn't say outstanding. The service was beyond awful. We asked to see the manager and he/she never came around. This was a pricey meal and definitely not worth it. I wouldn't go back.
First date. Left Bank is a plus. Trout Amandine was good but I like Fish Markets better. Pretty noisy and busy. Good for them but not so much for a romantic date.
But using OT was fantastic as people were seated everywhere waiting for a table. We walked up to the maitre di and were seated immediately!
I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at Left Bank. I entered 5 minutes before my reservation and there two other people waiting to check in and at least 15 people inside waiting to be seated. A gentleman was arguing with the hostess about the wait time to sit for dinner. She told him there was a long wait list for walk ins as he didn't have a reservation. I felt bad for the hostess for this persistent gentlemen but she held her ground. I'm thinking to myself, "great, now I'm gonna have to wait a half hour past the reservation time I have." Well, not the case. I checked in and immediately my party get seated. The waiter came and introduced himself. He was terrific. He helped us select cocktails and a bottle of champagne. I ordered the butternut squash rigatoni. It was terrific. My husband ordered something else but I didn't look because i didn't want to ask and I didn't want to have to share. I look forward to my next meal there.
Food was ok. Everything tasted fine, but nothing particularly special. The portions could be a bit larger, especially for the dessert.
The 5% wage surcharge is just ridiculous. Add that extra 5% to your menu prices! Telling me that you have to charge me extra 5% so you can pay your waiting staff better is not going to get any sympathy from me. What it tells me instead is that you are trying to blame your wait staff for the price increase and that you didn't pay them enough before the new wage law comes to effect and now have to give them raises.
