Leaf is a popular Charleston restaurant that strives to incorporate local ingredients and organic foods into every dish served from the kitchen. Whether you're seated inside or outside, the atmosphere is calm and relaxing. Large elm trees reach over the outside tables and shade the area from the sun, making it possible to be comfortable even on the sunniest days.
At Leaf, you can order a delicious Sunday brunch featuring your choice of scrumptious breakfast and lunch dishes as well as a cocktail. During the week, lunch and dinner are offered daily. Begin your meal with freshly made pita chips & dip or a platter of Brie cheese and berries before moving on to your entrée. Enjoy a crisp salad (with or without meat added), soups, sandwiches and melts, meatloaf, fish & chips, stuffed pork loin, Scottish salmon and other tasty delicacies served at Leaf.
Everything for Sunday brunch was just so-so. Food was ok, nothing special. Couldn't eat the asparagus in the omelette as it was just woody and stringy. Service was ok too. Outside seating area was nice, but I wouldn't go back.
From the moment we walked in the door, we were treated like honored guests. Chris, the bartender and his so-bartender, Tim, did everything to make us feel welcome. Delicious drinks just as we requested.
We had reservations in the dining room but decided to eat the bar. The hostess was fine with that change.
Each course was served with great care - side plates for starter and a serving spoon to share the Brussels & Bacon. The entrees arrived and one side was incorrect. Before we could say a word, the plate was whisked away and redelivered exactly as ordered. Chris brought a lovely side of mushroom demi because he thought it enhanced the meal. He was right. The Steak Frites were delicious. The steak was cooked to temperature and so tender. The spinach was flavorful. Perhaps too many Frites (if that is possible).
Chris was careful about our curtain time. Asking about the performance we were going to see and sharing a personal story. He made our visit so enjoyable - we are already planning a return visit to the bar.
We ate at the bar and everything was very nice. The dining room looked lovely.
Chicken on Cobb Salad, seemed like yesterdays chicken...very dried out. Hard boiled eggs over cooked; not enough greens; too many tomatoes and too much bacon
Tomato bisque soup had too much cream; no bread.
Restaurant should have had the out door chairs dried for sitting; could not eat outside
Service was more efficient, but less friendly than usual.
The service was impeccable, and our server the epitome of professionalism. What we ordered appeared promptly. There's a good match between price, quality, and quantity, but nothing truly exciting about the entrees or "after five" items.
Service was horrible after standing for ten minutes we seated ourselves at the bar. It took over half an hour before a server came to our table. We also ask to speak to a manager and one never showed up. The only saving grace for this establishment is the food. I manage a fine dinning establishment and I would never tolerate the level of service this place allows.
Loved the atmosphere there. All the food was very good. One slightly disappointing item was the Filet was cooked well done (I requested med-rare) on the Filet Benedict however it was still very tasty. Shrimp omelette was divine. The double burgers were awesome so say our men! Really great Bloody Marys as well. I have booked a luncheon in October!
With so many excellent restaurants in the area that cost just a bit more, a tiny bit more, don't bother with this place. The food was dripping with oil and bland. All three of the dishes I ordered had exactly the same nasty sauce. The fish 'n' chips came with balsamic vinegar drizzled over it, which is just a horrible idea. Balsamic is so sweet and strong, completely inappropriate for fish. I sent it back because the food was so horrible, but they didn't take it off the bill. I've worked in restaurants long enough to know that is because the manager is hiding the customer dissatisfaction with the food from the owner. Skip it
Our server Chris was exceptional. The presentation of my meal could have been improved .I would return to give it a second chance
The courtyard at leaf is a pleasant experience. The service was decent and the food was average at best.
Found this on Yelp and it was exactly what we were looking for. We had 6 adults and a baby. Absolutely perfect. Food was excellent.
The food was outstanding. The wine list extensive. Our waitress provided great recommendations. Only concern was that the Caprese salad was salted, but a minor issue compared to the wonderful scallop entree and the shrimp risotto. Would definitely return!
Our favorite restaurant in Charleston. Food is fabulous and service always perfect!
We were looking for a place for an easy dinner on a busy Saturday night. Our long time Charleston resident mentioned Leaf, but was concerned that it might be too casual when we should go to a "nice" place to eat. We were so pleasantly surprised. The setting and decor were lovely, the service was outstanding, and the food excellent. While they serve more casual foods, there were also some very classy restaurant entrees. It was a relaxed restaurant good for either a casual meal or a nice evening out.
Nestled away in downtown's historic district, Leaf is a great addition. The food was superb!! The menu is casual and sophisticated all in one. Our party had the soft shell crab special (loved), meatloaf dinner and short rib grilled cheese. No complaints. Great wine list. The ambiance wins it. Will most definitely be back on our next trip to the city!
The interior of Leaf (the bar area) is big and bright and clean looking. The high ceilings make for a very open and inviting space. Food was good, and service was friendly, but a bit slow and inattentive at times. Overall though, very good. would go again.
I discovered this hidden gem on recommendation from a coworker. We were not disappointed! We frequent many of the high-end Charleston classics, but equally enjoy exploring new places off the beaten path. Hidden in Beaufain Street, we cannot wait to return! The ambiance was more casual and when others were waiting for tables at the Magnolias, Pennisula Grills, and FIGs, Leaf is a place that you should put on your list. We split the caprese salad. Awesome. The salad was huge, plenty for two. The balsamic reduction YES! The salmon was ideal. Perfectly cooked center, perfectly crunchy skin. The short ribs were fantastically tender. My only SLIGHT complaint (if you can even call it that) was the fat on the meat. Still - I would order the dish everyday. It was nothing that took away from the flavor - just ate around it. We can't wait to bring our family. Must try!
Great food. Great service. Great ambiance. Nothing to dislike here.
Party of four. Came here after going to Theater 99. Had a reservation for 10:00 and were seated promptly. We asked for patio seating and were directed to a great table in a corner. One other party of five out there. The rest of the restaurant was empty except for a few people at the bar. This restaurant is where the old Vickery's was. Great location with free parking lot right in front. Inside restaurant had an odd smell as we passed through. We all commented that this was not a good sign for a restaurant! Not sure what it was. Server appeared and took drink orders. He walked away before the last person in our group even ordered his drink. We had to flag him down. We all ordered something different. Crab Cakes were good; not too bready. I had short ribs which were ok but kind of fatty. Nothing great. Server was fine but no smile or personality. Not very attentive. Just seemed like he wanted to leave. In atown full of fantastic restaurants, this one is definitely not up to par. Just nothing special. Will not go back.
The atmosphere was wonderful and I had one of the best gyros I've ever had at Leaf!
Visiting Charleston for the first time, my daughter and I wanted to stay away from tourist crowded restaurants. I found Leaf though open table, but also did my own research. Leaf exceeded all expectations. We noticed people didn't seem to want to leave, but rather stay outside under the lush, lit branches of the trees where one can actually hear your companion talking. The menu was simple and the food outstanding . The young lady that served us was very attentive. No detail was overlooked. We left Leaf feeling a memory had been made. Lovely. Just lovely!
We have been to Leaf at least a dozen times for lunch. I can't tell you how much I love this place. This time we went with a group of 8 for dinner and were very disappointed. The waitress was very nice but hard to flag down for most of the dinner. (It was not a busy night and it was 5:30pm) The crab cakes were cold and one of the salads came out without its shrimp. We ordered 2 rounds of cosmopolitans and the second time the drinks were definitely "short changed". We chose Leaf because we had a Spoleto event at the Memminger Auditorium which is one block away. Maybe they were short staffed that night. I would definitely go back again, but only for lunch.
Leaf has a wonderful ambiance and large outdoor terrace which is both beautiful and enticing. However, given the fact that we had a 12:15 brunch reservation for four I was put off by the brisk comment from the owner when we arrived that " I have to ask you to wait, we are giving the kitchen a ten minute break". If this is the start of a trend, it is a bad one. If restaurants want guests to show up on time, they better be prepared to seat them when they do. Don't ask your guests to put up with your kitchen mismanagement. It is both unprofessional and arrogant. That said, most will like Leaf.. We had a problem with the menu which featured very little for vegetarians and non egg lovers. But our guests enjoyed thei selections, the Mimosas were good and our server was warm, friendly and efficient,
I have had the grilled Caesar salad here at least 4 times. I recommended it to a dining companion and we both ordered it. When it arrived it was not grilled, just slightly room temperature with no evidence of grill marks or the great flavor it had previously been. It had a minimum of dressing, and my companion had chicken with it, she reported it was so dry she couldn't eat it. The management did take that off her bill. I usually love Leaf and will give it another try.
My wife and I come down from Charlotte on a monthly basis. We enjoy the wonderful restaurants in Charleston. We walked by Leaf one evening and were impressed w/the location, outdoor seating and menu. We were excited to dine there but unfortunately the experience was less than satisfactory. Our server was indifferent at best. We waited over an hour for two sandwiches and a salad. When we asked nicely if it would take much longer the waiter told us unapologetically it would be awhile longer despite the fact the restaurant was half empty. The waiter simply told us they only had two chefs in the kitchen - would have be nice to be told of the long wait before seating us. After another 15 minutes we simply paid for the grilled cheeses our kids had eaten along w/the appetizer we had eaten and left. They made no effort to apologize for the terrible dining experience or even offer to comp the appetizer. Needless to say we will never go back - which is unfortunate b/c the ambiance was great and the menu looked good.
we were there for and the Cuban sandwicheck was excellent. .will go back again while in Charleston ..
Great atmosphere! We sat outside and loved it. It wasn't overcrowded for a Saturday night. The trio dips appetizer was delicious! The chicken under a brick entree was also really good. The staff were all really nice and attentive, but not overly so. Great overall dinner experience.
Leaf has been my favorite restaurant to take our guests whether for brunch or lunch. everyone has enjoyed the food, ambiance & left with a great feeling of Charleston.
We celebrated my son's graduation from the College of Charleston at Leaf. The staff accommodated our family and the food was amazing.
The food wasn't that great and the place desperately needed new bar chairs. The patio is great and might be a good place for drinks but not dinner.
Leaf is a the best place for a great meal. They often have live music that is elegant, not bar noise, which is a lovely change. The food is always good and I constantly recommend it and never hear anything but great reviews after. LOVE LEAF!!!
Loved the seating under the tree. Food was good, scenery was phenomenal. It was in the middle of mother's day and the place was slammed. The food was still good where other restaurants would have crumbled.
Memorable about Leaf was that after choosing our entrees we were then told two of them were not on the menu anymore. Even the wine we chose was no longer available. Even our 18 year old daughter who was out with us and our friends was wondering why it wasn't possible to print new menus when they were just paper? Seems overpriced for the selections available. Casual (sandwiches) mixed with fish and meat entrees. A very confusing menu with white table cloths. Not sure what theme they are going for? Service was slow and the restaurant was not busy, even though it was Saturday night. The worst fish and chips I have ever had. A soggy, tasteless mess and the fries were supposed to be truffle fries. Not a taste of truffle anywhere. Disappointing for a Saturday night out with friends.
When we arrived at leaf, we waited half an hour for our waiter to ask us about beverages, another thirty to get the beverages, and another thirty to order. The food was okay, needed salt, but not as terrible as the service. I like the location and back patio but would never recommend this restaurant to a friend.
On a sunny Sunday, on a beautifully shaded patio, our brunch capped off a fabulous birthday weekend. The flavors and preparation of the stuffed French Toast and Crab Cake Eggs Benedict were unmatched. The complimentary Mimosa and Bloody Mary were a bonus! Our waiter was friendly and attentive, adding to the warm, welcoming ambiance.
Had a group of 7 recently and not one of us had a good meal. Food seemed to be prepared by
an inexperienced cook, certainly not a chef. Food was tasteless, over cooked, and ordinary.
Get a real chef or Leaf's future is not bright -
We had brunch at Leaf on Easter Sunday. It took over one hour to get our food. When it did arrive it was cold. The setting is nice but our food was not! We will not return.
We stopped at Leaf for a nice lunch while returning to Cincinnati from Hilton Head. What a delight! The owner (I presume) was charming, the server was cheery and thoughtful. We started with the Frickles and fried oysters -yum! Everyone's lunch from the salads to sandwiches were double yum! The outside courtyard is comfortable and relaxing! Worth the trip into town! We will definitely visit again!
it was a beautiful day in Charleston to have lunch outside at Leaf. The girls I took were very impressed with the atmosphere, menu, wine list---EVERYTHING. they will be going back as I will.
