Le Penguin - Greenwich Ratings and Reviews
I took a colleague as my guest to lunch yesterday (12/13). I have been there numerous times and love the restaurant. My friend had the omelet and salad, which she loved. I had a salad and the onion soup, which was really delicious..super! We had the Tarte Tatin for dessert: a star dessert, if there ever was one. Staff was as cordial as ever. What a charming place , with good food and nice service. A winner.
Always a treat, relaxed pleasnt atmosphere and the food is top notch. My wife loves the trout
as well as the duckling. I prefer the escargot and steak tartare which I feel comfortable ordering
in such a well run restaurant. There is always a varied menu with a good selection of well prepared
fish dishes. Got back home after a birthday dinner and my spouse could not stop raving about
what a wonderful choice and what an exceptional evening we had at Le Penguin.
There was a varied menu of things we four liked. The portions were just right and pricey but worth the price. There are too many tables which made the noise level too high. When it was Jean Louis, it had delightful ambiance, and I felt like a special guest. That is no longer true.
The food and wine were amazing. We had a 2005 Bordeaux and it drank beautifully. The staff are friendly and attentive. My special request for a corner table was filled with the best seating in the restaurant (albeit it was a Monday). They even brought over champagne 🥂 for the celebration. Not to be outdone, the dessert special (Almond Tartaine) was wonderful and not too sweet.
It is by far my favorite restaurant in all of Greenwich! The food is excellent and the service impeccable. It's small, bustling and runs like a well oiled machine. And in that way it reminds me of a New York Restaurant, which is the highest compliment I can give. I go to their other restaurants, The Fat Poodle and Le Penguin Westport as well, because I'm confident I will always have that same fantastic experience. Brunch, Lunch or Dinner..its always fabulous.
We went for restaurant week lunch and the "special" price was $39- which is expensive for lunch, but particularly so when you are expecting a bargain. The waitress seemed appalled that I even dared to ask for the restaurant week menu in the first place. The food was good, but not exceptional, and it was extremely noisy. It was not a good experience- I have been there before and so was disappointed.
A very pleasant French bistro with a fairly routine menu, handled competently. Very pleasant staff. Have only been mid-day, once on Sunday (quiet day), once on a Wednesday (filled). I do think it's a bit pricey, but still a decent value and I like the atmosphere.
The food Is always great! The service is pretty attentive. The seating is cramped, and the noise is too loud. Some of the dishes are too expensive. And the list of red wines by the glass too limited. But for me, quality of cooking is the most important attribute, and this is why Le Penguin is my favorite restaurant in Greenwich.
Unfortunately we were very disappointed this past Saturday evening with our dinner. We were given a table that was squeezed in and everytime someone passed my husband and I were bumped and on top of that my chair was broken! Seemed like you only got treated well if you were a regular-would definitely not recommend! Food was sub par.
The restaurant is not large; a small room that can feel intimate. We sat in the corner which was perfect. The noise was not a problem despite a number of larger tables nearby. The service was attentive, and the food was excellent. We both went with the specials which were good choices. The wine list is not a bargain, but had a good selection. We look forward to returning.
