Le Penguin - Greenwich Ratings and Reviews
"Moules marinières" were very good, Roquefort endives very disappointing as the "vinaigrette sauce" was very strong (too much white balsam vinegar) and just some real tiny bits (I could hardly feel the taste of the cheese and this is my favorite!) of real Roquefort cheese.
Wine was good but over priced: Malbec $14 and Rosé Minuti $12.
We did not try the desserts.
The waiters were nice.
I received a lecture after the reservation and while seated with business guests that we had to be finished by 8:30-perfectable acceptable to say that with the reservation totally unacceptable when it hasn't been and is done if front of serious guests and with a very stern unforgiving manner. What's worse is that by 8:30 the place had emptied out and two thirds of the tables were available. Had it not been for my guests I would have stood up and said then you can have the table right now and walked out. A remarkable lack of diplomacy.
Our experience was excellent. We were greeted and seated immediately. They even texted me to let me know that my table was ready early! Everything was delicious and the icing on the cake, they surprised us with a birthday candle and song for my husband! We will definitely be returning! and bringing friends!
I always love coming here with my husband but was lucky enough to have a quiet dinner there with my 10 year old son. He has numerous server allergies and the waiter and staff were just incredible and happy to make sure his meal was not only delicious but 100% safe for him! Thank you Le Penguin!!!!
Le Penguin is usually a “go to” restaurant for us. This time it did not live up to our past visits. The steak frites was hugely disappointing. The meat was tough and tasteless and the frites were over cooked. Even the arugula salad was flavorless. I’m pretty sure we won’t return. It’s very noisy and if the food is not good, why put up with the noise.
A lovingly rendered French bistro. Very authentic, especially the food and its presentation.
A reasonably priced wine list, specials that vary daily and seasonally, and attentive waitstaff were terrific.
The halibut special was splendid (and not expensive).
The steak frites was not only great steak but salty, crispy french fries straight from France.
Equally appealing for business lunch or romantic dinner.
Le Penguin was a great choice for an early New Year's eve dinner. Lovely, smallish dining room, fairly-priced and very tasty prix fixe dinner, excellent service. They were really organized and prepared for the crowd and the various sittings. Ample menu with lots of choices, everything was very tasty, extremely attentive and friendly staff. Never a moment when they seemed unprepared for the crowd. We'd return in a heartbeat for a special occasion or for a normal dinner. Always good and reliable.
Portion size was surprisingly large for a French Restaurant. Service was very attentive. Food was excellent and served properly. Wine list was only moderately-sized but very well rounded with something for everyone. Wasn’t crazy about the brown craft paper on the tables. Small dining room with a low ceiling makes for a noisy night. Definitely would recommend but do not expect a quite meal.
My boyfriend and I had dinner at Le Penguin and it was wonderful. The restaurant is intimate and nicely done. Service was swift, and not intrusive. Both of our meals were cooked perfectly. I’m still dreaming of their red snapper dish! I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a quintessential French meal!
I took a colleague as my guest to lunch yesterday (12/13). I have been there numerous times and love the restaurant. My friend had the omelet and salad, which she loved. I had a salad and the onion soup, which was really delicious..super! We had the Tarte Tatin for dessert: a star dessert, if there ever was one. Staff was as cordial as ever. What a charming place , with good food and nice service. A winner.
Always a treat, relaxed pleasnt atmosphere and the food is top notch. My wife loves the trout
as well as the duckling. I prefer the escargot and steak tartare which I feel comfortable ordering
in such a well run restaurant. There is always a varied menu with a good selection of well prepared
fish dishes. Got back home after a birthday dinner and my spouse could not stop raving about
what a wonderful choice and what an exceptional evening we had at Le Penguin.
There was a varied menu of things we four liked. The portions were just right and pricey but worth the price. There are too many tables which made the noise level too high. When it was Jean Louis, it had delightful ambiance, and I felt like a special guest. That is no longer true.
The food and wine were amazing. We had a 2005 Bordeaux and it drank beautifully. The staff are friendly and attentive. My special request for a corner table was filled with the best seating in the restaurant (albeit it was a Monday). They even brought over champagne 🥂 for the celebration. Not to be outdone, the dessert special (Almond Tartaine) was wonderful and not too sweet.
