le papillon in San Jose, features tasting and prix fixe menus with sustainable organic ingredients. The cuisine is modern French, with a bit of inspiration from California. The menu changes with the seasons, so no matter what time of year you visit, you can count on something exciting.
Just a few examples of what you might expect to find for starters at le papillon are mushroom salad with bay shrimp, artichoke soup, corn chowder and Dungeness crab souffl. Entres could include herb crusted halibut, braised sturgeon, roasted breast of pheasant, grilled noisettes of lamb and bison tenderloin. le papillon also offers a full catering service with many menu options to choose from.
Expensive but worth it for a VERY special occasion! The wait staff was very nice and knowledgable BUT a little too many many people while we were being seated an getting organized. We did not need bead on the table 5 seconds after being seated etc. Could not pick a wine until we knew what we were having for dinner.
Incredible food! Definitely a great dining experience!
Le Papillon is our most favorite restaurant & always where we go on a special occasion. The food is always sumptuous, the wine list is wonderful and the service impeccable. We've sampled everything on the menu & like it all. The Grand Marnier soufflé is a wonderful finish to a fabulous dinner. Can't wait for our next visit.
From the lavender lemon drop cocktail to the treats delivered by the chef's amuse-bouche, from the first course to the last, it was absolutely delicious. Textures, sauces and flavors were absolutely in harmony. Presentation was also elegant. But even with all those qualities Papillon menu is not self-conscious The good taste is present in how they name their plates with simplicity. Always on my favorite list of restaurants.
We came here for special family gathering. We came in at 5:30pm when dinner starts. It was quiet and nice and comfortable. We were talking softly and enjoying the atmosphere. Appetizer was good, service was good.
At about 6:30pm, there were 2 groups came, one 5 and another 10 people. People starts to talk loudly and suddenly it lost the upscale environment. We didn't expect a super quiet place, but definitely not group gathering and laughing cheering.
The main course is okay. Good portion, and the quality is good, though not exceptional. But it's definitely good.
The price is good also. Much cheaper than many other French restaurants. Worth it.
My girl loves to go out for fancy restaurant, and this is the one she loves and was very satified for her BD. All the foods were decorated beautiful, and the service are so nice. We did not expect that we could have a private room for our family and my daughter's BD flan cake cheering on this special day. We loves the France Wine, and my three kids really like the Deer Disk. We had a great night. Will definitely coming back for other occasions.
Lovely restaurant, excellent food. Be prepared for a prix fixe menu that's un peu cher.
We have dined at this restaurant about 6 times over the past 2 years. The food is consistently creative and delicious. The service is impeccable and the atmosphere is wonderful for visiting with a small group of friends. It can also be very romantic for celebrating a special occasion. This is possibly my favorite restaurant in Santa Clara County!
Wine pairings were outstanding and innovative. Courses included more cheese than I prefer, which is maybe a French thing.
Love the Hamachi and swordfish!
Food was good. The souffle and scallop were really good. Would recommend for special occasions. Only one negative- The dinning area was a bit noisy though.
We were late by eight minutes but greeted and seated promptly. We had a three-course-dinner ordering Scallops and Foie Gras as appetizer, salsify soup that was shared, Sea Bass and Lamb for our entrees and sharing a soufflé for our desserts. Everything was superb. We brought our own wine and we find the corkage fee very reasonable. The sommelier and our server delivered professional service during our dinner making our dining experience wonderful.
Food and service were great more than I expected.
Le Papillion has been a staple in the area for awhile. Even so, it was our first time there. We thought the meal was superb- especially the amuses bouche that started our dinner. The portions were just right and the service was wonderful. An excellent value for fine French cuisine. We'll go back again!
Lr Papillon made our celebration very special. The slow cooked lobster and escargot are amazing! The other courses were delicious but these two stand out in our minds. The waiters were delightful, unobtrusive yet attentive. We will definitely be back!
Took my Valentine out for dinner ,and was amazed on how we were treated. Best experience I had ever had ... Food was outstanding and service was wonderful. I wanted to go all out for my Valentine and this place was it!..A little expensive ,but was worth it for my 1st experience of Fine Dining..Helped us select a proper wine with our food and wasn't rushed at all, just a great experience !... I will be back
Beautiful cozy classy restaurant. Not flashy noisy or hip in any way like the new in vogue places. So depends what you are looking for. Food was excellent as always. Perfect, imaginative. Hot and fresh. Waitstaff / assistants respectful and courteous. Only problem is parking!
I hate to submit a review for this restaurant via Open Table since we have been long term customers and value this place. However they have no source for us to submit a review on their website.
This has been our favorite place for very special events for years. This year it was Valentines plus my wife's birthday. The server must have been brand new or a fill-in. We asked her opinion of items on the menu and all she offered was a read of the menu description. Further she had little personality. The meal presentation was disjointed meaning that we were served at different times rather than the usual same time. There was an especially long delay in the dessert service for one of our guests.
Two guests ordered coffee. After a long delay we were asked if we wanted more. Even before we could answer the server answered a no for us and whisked away the coffee cups. It became obvious they she was more interested in having us vacate our table than allow us to continue our conversation.
I have been going to this restaurant for over 30 years and it has never failed in food, service or ambiance.
The chef is a creative genius and the owner and staff are extremely professional and know outstanding service.
I highly recommend this restaurant for a not to be missed experience.
This time, the dishes are great (beef & fish), but my favorite souffle is a bit dense, should be more fluffy
Best meal in a long time. Live this restaurant!
Been going to Le Papillon for years and each time has been excellent. Very consistent and honestly much better than most Michelin starred restaurants in the Bay Area.
Great service , good to excellent food, but very pricey. Definitely a 'special event' destination when money is not important.
Salsify soup was outstanding. Savory, creamy and totaly delicious
Scallops were very good but not exceptional
Raw lobster thingy was very tasty, would have wanted more.
Filet minion was very good but not exceptional. Sauce was not distinctive, a little meager for a French style resaurant. Fried kale tased good but left an unpleasant aroma that didn't go with the dish. Beef was lean. Mushroom tasted odd and didn't add to beef. Wish they had used a porcini.
Pear salad was lacking in dressing. In February it was a poor choice as pear was hard and mellon lacked taste.
Wife passed on desert as all sounded too complex and all she wanted was a simple pudding. Sometimes all you want is a simple dish.
This was such a special occasion .. our 59th anniversary. Location so quaint and excellently setup for a quiet evening with friends. Service and food outstanding. Red deer, whitefish were complemented with just the right sidedishes. The favorite, and best ... the souffle!
for a restaurant that presents itself as gourmet, it has a lot of work to do. a lot of wait staff that are courteous but not at all attentive; and average food of quality of an olive garden really. Overall -- overpriced and underwhelming
We greatly enjoyed every dish we had! We found the food to be creative, interesting, and amazingly delicipus! We will be back.
Love love love the testing menu.
excellent meal and service. Highly recommend this restaurant for special occassions
We have dined here a number of times and, as usual, our dinner and service was outstanding. We would recommend Le Papillon as a special place for dinner.
Excellent food with very good service. The Salsify soup was the highlight.
We ordered the tasting menue it was unique and delicious, we were so full after that and couldn't even walk out on our own. Don'the be fool by the small portions. Downside, we asked our server if it's per table or per person. He said per table, bill came out per person. He went on and said "if one person at the table orders it, everyone at the table would have to order it too". Lousy communication by the server
I've driven past Le Papillon several hundreds of times. Always thinking "someday I'll take my wife". Well 37 years later I've finally taken her. Well worth the wait. We had the tasting menu and the paired wines. (Highly recommend the tasting menu.) My wife doesn't drink red wine but the sommelier stepped up and paired a nice Chardonnay to complement squab and bison. From the amuse Bouche through the dessert course everything was plated beautifully. The taste was spot on. The progression of the tasting was well thought out. Simple delicate tastes through the heavier courses all built upon one another. Highly recommend.
We had a grand experience at this restaurant. The service was low key and attentive, the food just outstanding and they have an expansive wine list. The bill was pretty big, but we had the whole works including their notable souffle dessert. I never mind paying a big price for outstanding food and service. However, I think we will save this one for another special occasion
Even thou we had a fix menu for New Years Eve, there were enough good choices in each category to make it hard to decide. Excellent service and food! Only negative was the price for drinks were way too much! A lemon drop martini was $20 and a Bombay Sapphire and tonic was $19! Good thing we only had one.
Prefix menu was great. Wish to have the chef's tasting menu next visit..
Once again Le Papillon exceeded our already high expectations. Everything we had was great, starting with the poached lobster and hamachi tartare appetizers to the entrees of sea bass, fallow deer and pork tenderloin. Thanks again for a wonderful experience.
Service was excellent. The food was very good. I had the foie gras as an appetizer and it was amazing. The pear salad was good but nothing more. The deer was phenomenal. It was perfectly cooked and I was very impressed with the texture and the flavor. I ordered the cheese plate for dessert and my wife had the soufflé. I loved the cheese plate but my wife did not love the soufflé. It was very good but she did not love it. The ambience was fantastic and we plan on going back there again in the near future.
We've beeen coming here for years and they never disappoint. The food is always excellent, quietly innovative without being overtly showy. The have a kitchen, not a laboratory. If I must find something to complain about it would be that the room is a bit generic and without character. But I'm usually to busy enjoying the food to notice.
A fine evening to celebrate a special anniversary. Great food, fine service, nice atmosphere. A little pricey, but worth it once in a while.
