What Insiders Are Saying
This French bistro is the place to see anyone who’s ever been on “Meet the Press". The food is also delicious.
Amazing as alway! Great way to celebrate a birthday!!
Always one of our favorites for brunch!
Le Diplomate is simply incredible. We had an unbelievable meal from start to finish. We were freezing from the walk there, so we ordered the hot cider with bourbon right away. It was perfect, not sweet, served with a cinnamon stick and orange peel. We then had the escargot and French onion soup. So much flavor! My husband had the duck and I had the 1/2 roasted chicken for dinner. We were gushing!! They were cooked perfectly. We were so stuffed, but needed to try the apple tart and have another hot cider. The apple tart is the BEST DESSERT I HAVE EVER HAD! The ice cream perfectly complimented the delicate, soft apples and crust. I can not wait to go back!!
Lively atmosphere and great food. Make reservations 28 days out.
Food was really good, the steak tartare amazing and the bouillabaisse was good- I wouldn’t choose it again though. It needed more flavor to it. What I didn’t like was that we received the food way to quickly. So no time to relax between the courses.
Impeccable. Luxurious. Beautiful.
Hot spot in DC! We had a fantastic experience at LeDiplomate. We were surprised at the lovely holiday decorations and fun crowd on a Thursday night. The food was fantastic and the service was also quite good. We enjoyed the mussels and steak frites - YUM! Also recommend a champagne cocktail at the bar - a great touch!
Dinner was great as always. Still my number one restaurant in DC.
Noise was a little loud in the front but seated level dropped. Great service and the oysters were really good. Steak Frites was best I’ve had in a while
This restaurant is the Gold standard for Washington dining scene. I have driven by this location for decades, and watched a run-down metal shop converted to the current gem, complete with items from Europe, such as tile, windows, tables, bar, even the vivid display of photos and cycling memorabilia. Food is tops!
We went to Le Diplomate with high hopes but our experience was tainted by a lack of professionalism by the hosts and manager. We arrived at the restaurant 5 minutes prior to our reservation and told we would be seated as soon as a table became available. To keep the story short, after a couple of rude "scoldings" from the hostess about being patient I asked for the manager. We were finally given a table 45 minutes after the reservation time (and we had not requested any special seating arrangements). The manager was unapologetic about the delay. I might add that walk-in customers without reservations were being quoted a 45-minute wait - what was the point of making a reservation when I could have walked in and been served in the same amount of time I waited? We did enjoy our food and the table service was excellent but the experience was clouded by the less than ideal treatment at the front end of the restaurant.
Always an excellent experience. been here several times and never a disappointment. Everything is tasty. Love their onion soup, veal, trout, duck, meat, etc. Great fries too! Service is always attentive and everyone is nice. Bread is fantastic.
Exceptional all around. As a bartender at a restaraunt with similar flair, I was more than pleased.
I ordered the mushroom soup and the ravioli, and both of my dishes were inedibly salty. The service and atmosphere were good though.
We had booked our table one month in advance and still we were seated in the outdoor area which has a temporary cover these days. It was very cold in the room. After complaining we were seated in the other area. It is OK place for casual dinner but not for birthday or any other special celebrations.
Great food, wonderful service and great ambiance. Always a fantastic experience.
Celebrating my engagement!
What a fantastic experience! Love this place. I hope to return often. Waiter was fabulous; his recommendations were fantastic. Food was exceptional. A memorable experience. Highly recommend making a reservation.
This is one of the restaurants which i love to come again to visit. The food is Delicious. Srtvice is good. It always busy. I recommend to reserve a table.
We visited the restaurant for the first time on Dec 2, 2018 after being highly recommended by friends. First impression, was that it was packed and LOUD. We overheard some of the servers cursing the clients (to their backs) in Spanish. That raised an eyebrow... The food was delicious - steaks/friites was excellent. However, we were very disappointed by the service. Out waiter Atef didn't bother to spend time explaining the menu to us after we told him that it was our first visit. Atef brought our check before even attempting to offer the dessert menu. We were so underwhelmed by the service that decided to go somewhere else for dessert. When we paid our check, Atef "accidentally" and "coincidentally" dropped water all over our girls jackets... we were in and out of the restaurant within 1 hour. The servers looked worn out and overworked, it reflected on the service we received. We felt rushed and unappreciated. Not worth a trip to DC to go there.
If you are looking for a French cuisine/experience with a high end and excellent service, go to Bistro L'Hermitage at Woodbridge VA.
Amazing. Feel like I’m in a French Christmas movie during the holiday season!
Great food, excellent service. Lobster appetizer was perfect. Trout was excellent. Our waiter was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. What more could you want.
Food was very expensive and somewhat bland. Had the duck breast and wife had the Veal Escalope both were alright but for price and hype of the place very disappointing. Best part of the dinner was dessert which we shared the Creme Brulee which was very good. Would not recommend since there are so many better options in the Washington DC area where the food is much better and tastier.
We were in this past weekend to celebrate a birthday in our family. Our waiter Arthur was attentive, gracious and all around great. This was our first time dining and I was really enthralled with how beautiful the dining space was decked out for the holidays making it feel really special. The food was superb and enjoyed by all in our party including the elder grandparents and teens in our group. Highlights definitely were the Closseau cocktail, French onion soup (the best!), steak frites, Beef Bourguignon (so amazing). Truly an enjoyable experience and we will be returning!
It was too loud ! Only negative I can say! So authentic, fabulous service, a very happy place.
Great food and great ambiance. Wonderful service- attentive and professional. And the bread!! Best I’ve had outside of France.
Our server was outstanding, friendly informative, and omnipresent without being the slightest bit intrusive.
The food was delicious, however the onion soup and entrees were warm, but not hot. I think the kitchen needs to address exit temperature of the food because while tasty it was barely warm enough - I considered sending it back for reheating, but I hate being that kind of patron.
Also, It would be far more pleasant a dining experience if the restaurant wasn’t run at full tilt and what feels like overcapacity. The noise and jumble of people that swirl around some tables means those tables should disappear if a pleasant dining experience is of import to your mission as a fine dining establishment.
Duck was superb. Best creme brûlée ever. So light yet rich. Even with 10pm reservation still had to wait till 10:15 on a Friday to be seated. Bar was overflowing into dining room which is disruptive to such a heavenly meal.
Le Dip is very consistent but I was frustrated with the reservation and seating process. We had a reservation for 8:30 but were told we would be seated “whenever tables cleared” with no estimate of when that might happen. I expressed my frustration and the manager did nicely provide a free glass of champagne to compensate, but it seemed to be happening with multiple tables that night. I think Le Dip should reconsider whether it is overbooking for reservations. I don’t mind waiting a bit but it would be good to know if it will at least be close the reservation time. We ended up waiting almost 30 minutes past our appointed time.
Loved the food, wine list, and our server. The restaurant felt more like a bar scene than a restaurant. The noise level, away from the bar, was so loud it was difficult to hole a conversation. The dress of the patrons on a Friday night was very casual.
This is my second time dining at Le Diplomate and each time I love it more and more. I am a fan of French food and especially bistro style food. This one is authentic and has amazing pomme frites, baguettes, French onion soup, steak & frites, bouillabaisse on Friday nights, and so much more. I took 3 people with us for dinner who had never been there before and all loved the food, ambience and overall vibe. It's a must when you are in DC!
Festive vibe and great food...Their duck is amazing!!
The waiter was very attentive and made excellent beer and dessert suggestions. Our meal was delicious and we had a great time. Fantastic food and service.
Great experience. Service was fantastic. Food incredible. Love the vibe. Great holiday atmosphere
Always a great place to go after a play at Studio!
Great atmosphere, great food, reasonable prices. The restaurant reminded us of restaurants we have visited in Paris. The staff is friendly and attentive.
The service is always great. This is my number one spot.
Classic French Bistro fare that is superbly-executed. My steak au poivre was one of the best steaks I've had in years at a restaurant (including some notable steakhouses). My wife's roast chicken was juicy and flavorful (obviously well-brined and with herbs and butter tucked under the skin).
Wonderful meal. Waiter was nice but tried to rush us. We made sure we put a stop to that and enjoyed a great meal.
