Stephen Starr brings his signature brand of hospitality and design to the nation’s capital with the opening of Le Diplomate, located at 14th & Q. Serving lunch, brunch and dinner, the stylish 260 seat restaurant transports diners to the beloved cafés of Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris. The extensive menu features a variety of classic dishes including Onion Soup Gratinee, Steak Frites, and Poulet Roti as well as contemporary bistro fare, with dishes such as Shaved Veal Tongue with Mache and Bavette de Boeuf à l’Echalote. A thoughtfully curated wine list and cocktail program perfectly complements the cuisine and creates an environment suitable for romantic dinners or lively group gatherings. In warmer weather, enjoy dining "en plein air" in the stunning outdoor café where you can take in the bustling energy of DC while sipping on the perfect kir royale.

Overall this was an excellent dining experience in every way. The food was outstanding. The service was on point and our server was engaging and gave us great advice on what to order.

The lobster frites and tuna carpaccio were perfect. One of the best we’ve ever had. And the steak was perfectly crusted with a extremely good sauce.

If you can get a table. Go.

Steak tarte was the best I have in my life, the only thing was the tables where to close to each other, I was hearing the conversations on the tables next to me and in general the noise of the indoor siting was to laud to have a especial dinner for two. But everything was worth food delicious

I was disappointed that even though I booked far in advance, I was given a table right next to an open door that staff continually went through to serve outdoor diners.

Our server rushed our whole experience, wanting to take our entree order before we even had water. We told him multiple times to slow it down but he didn’t. While the food was delicious, it arrived before we finished our cocktails and even before our wine was delivered. The server was also completely lacking of any personality. It was a very frustrating way to spend $250 in 1 hour.

This is a must have for anyone wanting a fresh take on French cuisine. The staff was exceptionally prompt and kind. The food was absolutely delicious. Despite a fast paced and full restaurant, our food took no time at all to come to our table.

Dined here for hubby’s birthday. Huge, very noisy restaurant that somehow seems to work, possibly because it’s reminiscent of a French bistro. Service was terrific. Our server was very attentive without being intrusive. I was impressed that we were given fresh cutlery after before each course. Steak tartare was a winner, as was the tomato salad. Duck a l’orange was also quite good. My grilled branzino fell shorty though…..not much flavor other than salt. I did not care for the acidic accompaniment of the gigantie beans and what I think were olives. The accompaniment would have been better with a less acidic preparation. Our first time dining here, but we will go back for other dishes.

I'll start by saying this restaurant had an "incident" the night we were there. A man ran in off the street, grabbed bottles from the bar and started throwing them around the restaurant. Broken glass everywhere. He was subdued by and employee and a guest until police arrived. Everyone was shaken, so understand that service was be less than expected. There was much confusion....they were going to reopen, then they were going to close and we were told we could leave (no cost for our 1st round), then told they were going to open. Server did not seem engaged from the beginning (even before the drama inside). We were seated outside. Server returned to table next to us 5 times before he came back to us to offer more drinks...we had been empty about 40 minutes. Then, he only offered us bottles without providing us a menu to review pricing. Was clearly flustered by what went on inside, but we really just didn't feel welcomed or of importance. Kinda just brought our food (long, long delay) without any sense of clean, enjoyable service. Our tip reflected what we felt was a lack of service, but still $25. We were still charged for our first round,, even though we were told it would be comped. The bottle of wine he chose for us was far and above what we would have paid normally, but we weren't presented with a menu to review. He questioned our tip as we left (bold of him) and we explained our reasons to him. Just super unpleasant all around, but we've heard this place is normally quite good. Just a very, very off night.

Took my fiancé here for his birthday dinner, he loves French food but has never been here. He said it was one of the best meals he's had, and it definitely was a great meal. The foie Gras parfait was a favorite of both of ours, the not so petite plateau was delicious and fresh, and the trout almandine was amazing. The warm shrimp salad is one of my favorite dishes here and still remains true. The onion soup is nice but much lighter than any other I've hard, can't say I didn't like it but it was different. The duck l'orange, while very well seasoned and the sauce was amazing, was slightly over cooked. The chocolate mousse was very decedent and a great ending to the meal. The service was amazing and made the birthday celebration special. I can't wait to come back.

Dinner was great and the food was excellent! Our server was very attentive, as well. My only minor complaint was the seating/space felt a bit cramped. I didn't like the the bench style seats where a separate party and table were seated "with" us. Overall, the tables were too close together.

There are several reasons Le Diplomate, unlike many of its neighbors, continues to do excellent business day after day and night after night notwithstanding the pandemic. It excels in all areas.

There are extensive accomodations for outside dining. While on our last three visits we had been seated on the patio, this time we were placed in the "streetery" on what previously served as the parking lane of 14th St. We had a personal booth. It was comfortable, noise insulation was very good, and it was actually quieter than any meal we ever had inside the restaurant.

Le Diplomate continued its tradition of excellent food, both with longtime staples on the menu (an heirloom tomato salad bursting with flavor) and items new to the menu. I'd never previously encountered halibut on the menu. Mine was perfectly cooked, and comparable to entrees I have had elsewhere at higher price points. (Although no one would consider Le Diplomate cheap.)

Service was also strong. Our request tp move to a table out of direct sunlight on a steamy early evening was granted, and our server did a good job answering our questions about the menu.

I finally venture out to check out Le Diplomate. Our lunch date was going great until I see a mouse crawling under the table of another diner. If I had not already finished my food, I would have stopped. It was horrible experience and I don’t think I can ever go back there to eat!
