French
Stephen Starr brings his signature brand of hospitality and design to the nation’s capital with the opening of Le Diplomate, located at 14th & Q. Serving lunch, brunch and dinner, the stylish 260 seat restaurant transports diners to the beloved cafés of Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris. The extensive menu features a variety of classic dishes including Onion Soup Gratinee, Steak Frites, and Poulet Roti as well as contemporary bistro fare, with dishes such as Shaved Veal Tongue with Mache and Bavette de Boeuf à l’Echalote. A thoughtfully curated wine list and cocktail program perfectly complements the cuisine and creates an environment suitable for romantic dinners or lively group gatherings. In warmer weather, enjoy dining "en plein air" in the stunning outdoor café where you can take in the bustling energy of DC while sipping on the perfect kir royale.

The Infatuation

This French bistro is the place to see anyone who’s ever been on “Meet the Press". The food is also delicious.

Ratings 8.0-8.5:The best way to think about restaurants in the low to mid 8′s is that these are the places you would absolutely go back to, anytime. These restaurants are ones that you want to bring a friend to, just so they can also experience the duck carnitas, or burger, or whatever dish the place is known for.

Another terrific meal at Le Diplomate. Sarah, my server was friendly, gracious, efficient, and had impeccable timing.

The atmosphere is full of fun, and I appreciated the extra touches of hospitality from the maitre d’.

We had made a reservation for 8pm but we’re made to wait for 20 mins after arriving on time because there was a backlog. We basically stood there without a table. What was the point of making a reservation then?

Our food was terrible. Fries were overcooked. Steak was rare, although we asked for medium. Garnish was scraggly. I was on a business dinner, and not able to complain. I will never go back, and would rate this food as unacceptable. Very disappointing, as I have been to the original restaurant in Philadelphia.

We had a lovely birthday brunch and our server was wonderful. The reason I gave service a three ( our server deserved at 5) is because we asked another server close by to take a picture of us and he very rudely said "Im busy". Of course our server came and took our picture. Everything else was fabulous.

Le Diplomate is simply incredible. We had an unbelievable meal from start to finish. We were freezing from the walk there, so we ordered the hot cider with bourbon right away. It was perfect, not sweet, served with a cinnamon stick and orange peel. We then had the escargot and French onion soup. So much flavor! My husband had the duck and I had the 1/2 roasted chicken for dinner. We were gushing!! They were cooked perfectly. We were so stuffed, but needed to try the apple tart and have another hot cider. The apple tart is the BEST DESSERT I HAVE EVER HAD! The ice cream perfectly complimented the delicate, soft apples and crust. I can not wait to go back!!

Fantastic meal, great ambiance, the BEST creme brulee, great cocktails. My only complaint was that people kept bumping into me every time they walked by. The space was right and it's one thing at the bar, but not great when you are sitting down for a special meal

Food was really good, the steak tartare amazing and the bouillabaisse was good- I wouldn’t choose it again though. It needed more flavor to it. What I didn’t like was that we received the food way to quickly. So no time to relax between the courses.

Hot spot in DC! We had a fantastic experience at LeDiplomate. We were surprised at the lovely holiday decorations and fun crowd on a Thursday night. The food was fantastic and the service was also quite good. We enjoyed the mussels and steak frites - YUM! Also recommend a champagne cocktail at the bar - a great touch!

This restaurant is the Gold standard for Washington dining scene. I have driven by this location for decades, and watched a run-down metal shop converted to the current gem, complete with items from Europe, such as tile, windows, tables, bar, even the vivid display of photos and cycling memorabilia. Food is tops!

We went to Le Diplomate with high hopes but our experience was tainted by a lack of professionalism by the hosts and manager. We arrived at the restaurant 5 minutes prior to our reservation and told we would be seated as soon as a table became available. To keep the story short, after a couple of rude "scoldings" from the hostess about being patient I asked for the manager. We were finally given a table 45 minutes after the reservation time (and we had not requested any special seating arrangements). The manager was unapologetic about the delay. I might add that walk-in customers without reservations were being quoted a 45-minute wait - what was the point of making a reservation when I could have walked in and been served in the same amount of time I waited? We did enjoy our food and the table service was excellent but the experience was clouded by the less than ideal treatment at the front end of the restaurant.

We had booked our table one month in advance and still we were seated in the outdoor area which has a temporary cover these days. It was very cold in the room. After complaining we were seated in the other area. It is OK place for casual dinner but not for birthday or any other special celebrations.
