Perhaps I went into this particular restaurant experience with expectations too high. It was good, don't get me wrong, but I wasn't blown away. What impressed: cocktails, the before-dinner bread basket, the pommes dauphine, coffee & dessert. The wait staff was competent and proficient as well, and I quite loved the atmosphere. What left us a bit disappointed: charcuterie ($23 for appetizer charcuterie and it featured no cheeses - that was extra $), the entrees were good (not great- both my husband and I had lukewarm feelings about our spendy entrees) and I feel it was fairly overpriced in general. Something about this place makes me really want to love it... I'm just not quite there. Maybe next time I'll order a different entree?
Always a go to spot
We adore Le Diplomate. As close to Paris as you can get in heart of DC!
Overall everything was fine but not great. No dish stood out as a highlight. We had the belon oysters (very briney), fois gras parfait (decent but did not come with enough bread for the amount of spread), steak frites (underseasoned) and the bouillabaisse (very small portion and a bit overseasoned). Given how hard it was to get a reservation, I had much higher expectations. The service was decent and the decor was very Parisian but it did get pretty noisy and became harder and harder to talk. There wasn't anything that made me feel like I would definitely want to come back but if someone else really wanted to go, I would go back because nothing was bad.
I asked the bartender to make me a cocktail with Lillet. He made me an excellent white negroni. Thank you!
Bouillabaisse was the plat du jour-- very good, but could dial back on the salt.
The gougeres were addictive and very flavorful. Will go back for the gougeres and cocktails.
The vibe is very fun. The restaurant is loud and the tables are close together. We were okay with that. It feels like a proper French bistro and is not pretentious.
We had a very satisfying meal and excellent cocktails before heading to the Lincoln Theater to see The Mavericks. A good night.
Great food and service as usual. We were initially seated in a very private outdoor booth but requested a more central location and we were quickly accommodated. Seafood platter was excellent.
Perfect last minute dinner for friends. Love the cabana and best cheese burger in town!
Great lunch spot. Quick. Our sever Michael was thorough and knowledgeable!
Excelente ambiente, comida y servicio: muy recomendable
A friend and I went to Le Dip for their birthday. Got a couple of drinks, a cheese board, and a couple of dishes. All of the food was amazing, and the service was great too (including getting some good food/drink recommendations). On top of everything, they brought a couple of free, extra treats for the birthday, which was a really thoughtful touch. The place is quite big and usually busy, so there is a decent noise level but one that did not affect our conversation.
Amazing! Escargot on One Thousand, would recommend for a nice dinner date out
We had a server named Jake and it made the entire experience.
The ambiance and decor was spot on. The food was delicious. And the cocktails were 1st rate.
Fantastic! Lunch was out of this world. Service and everything was top notch
Le Diplomate always delivers! Great food and service.
You really can’t go wrong at Le Dip. Service is always top notch, ambiance is excellent and the food is always so solid
Asked for medium well on the steak and the outside/ends were kinda burnt. Everything else was amazing! Definitely recommend the escargot
Love everything about it. If I didn’t know better, I thought I was in Paris!
Great steak, perfectly cooked MR; great Branzino filet; great wine; Sommelier brought my wife three wines to taste so she could choose one for dinner
Outstanding as always.
One of the first fining out experience I ta-COVID-19. The server, Lyndsay was exceptional …as were all staff.
Wonderful food ,beautiful atmosphere, excellent service, you may think you’re in Paris ! Recommended without any qualm or hesitation. You won’t be disappointed.
We enjoyed it thoroughly. The warm shrimp salad was so delicious, I want another one today. Everything else was great too.
Absolutely loved it!!!! Being European and living in the States for years, I felt like home :) True French food and olalala the bread.
The vibe and interior is amazing too.
Difficult to get a brunch reservation but it was worth the wait.
We were sat outside after requesting inside on the reservation and had to stare at the waiters’ bar / credit card machines / kitchen
I keep returning here because of the great food, fantastic service, and wonderful outdoor seating.
Everything was as expected though the wait staff left something to be desired.
Superb ambience and wait staff. For those with sound volume concerns, the main rooms less noisy than the side room which is tiled. Really attentive and friendly wait staff. I had the fish with green beans; beans were perfect and the fish was slightly overdone, to my surprise. Bread made up for it - fantastic. It was a little bit of Paris in the middle of DC. If I lived near by, I would be there every day for a cafe and croissant! I will return for sure.
Great food, as always, but service was not what it usually is at Le Diplomat. Server kept forgetting to bring me things I asked for. I never did get ketchup for my fries and gave up asking after the third time. He looked a bit frazzled as the place was packed. But overall it was a good dining experience.
Very chilled and welcoming. I love the food there.
Food was amazing, the flavors will wake up your sense of taste. Delicious! Service was very attentive without being annoying. Absolutely perfect!
Amazing food! Fun atmosphere , we felt like we were in a French bistro!
Desire some classic French bistro fare? Look not further than Le Diplomate. If you go, take a peek beyond the burger or steak frites. The gougeres alone are reason enough for a visit.
Beautiful French Brasserie with excellent outdoor seating pods. Service was excellent as was the warm shrimp salad and creme brulee dessert. Steak poive and steak frites were tasty.
Lovely waiter and delicious food, good wine selection. However, so loud as to be nearly unbearable. I missed half of the conversation.
The food was excellent as usual but the customer service by our waiter Drew was very subpar. I understand that the restaurant can be very busy but that does not excuse the lack of polite and respectful communication by your waiter. When we first arrived at the table, he failed to acknowledge our presence for at least 10 minutes. We had to flag him down just to get water. Then when he finally arrived at our table, his behavior was very brisk even when asked about certain items on the menu. When he brought our drinks and food, he would drop off our order at the table and leave without a word which I thought was rude. We also had to ask for every item we wanted like bread and flag him down to get our coffee and water refilled. I could excuse this behavior as just being overwhelmed during a busy time but I noticed that the table next to us who were an older white couple ordering “bottles” of wine were treated nicer than our table. My two friends who are regulars at the restaurant also noticed that the table service was lacking. The services provided by the hostess and bartender were excellent.
It’s all bout the bread - and it’s the very best at Le Dip.
As usual the food was outstanding!! The only disappointing moment was being told that there is now a $1.00 per Olive change for blue cheese olives.
