Stephen Starr brings his signature brand of hospitality and design to the nation’s capital with the opening of Le Diplomate, located at 14th & Q. Serving lunch, brunch and dinner, the stylish 260 seat restaurant transports diners to the beloved cafés of Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris. The extensive menu features a variety of classic dishes including Onion Soup Gratinee, Steak Frites, and Poulet Roti as well as contemporary bistro fare, with dishes such as Shaved Veal Tongue with Mache and Bavette de Boeuf à l’Echalote. A thoughtfully curated wine list and cocktail program perfectly complements the cuisine and creates an environment suitable for romantic dinners or lively group gatherings. In warmer weather, enjoy dining "en plein air" in the stunning outdoor café where you can take in the bustling energy of DC while sipping on the perfect kir royale.

Great steak and fries at a great price, largest French wine list I've ever seen, sommelier was great to talk to and very knowledgeable. Would recommend to anyone.

Stunning. Impeccable service, which at this point we’re looking for if we’re going to take the trouble to go out on a date, beautifully prepared and presented food, unpretentious and unpatronizing suggestions about wine that didn’t suggest we were morons or neophytes, uniform good humor from staff, and an easy, unhurried pace. Really one of my top twenty meals out, anywhere, ever.

The food is good but when I ordered the wine on the low range from the wine list, which is $60 a bottle wine, the waiter asked me if that was my range price and I said yes, then he said that it’s cheap, I did not say anything as I did not want to make trouble and had a birthday celebration but I thought, if a $60 bottle of wine is cheap why are they serving that cheap wine I at this great restaurant.

Food was amazing. We were there to celebrate a job promotion and as far as food and service, Le Diplomate certainly delivered. Where it fell short was in our seating. We came early for our reservation. After being given the option, we opted for outside. Unfortunately, we were seated on the perimeter. There was no heater above us nor was there one beside us. During dinner, we realized we were the only ones. Everyone who came after us was seated under a heater. We dined with our coats on. I would never do this again. Please put a heat lamp above those tables so no one has to endure what we did. Thank you.

Very pricey for what I was served. I wasn’t as impressed as all the recommendations had labeled it. I don’t have a desire to go back. Just wasn’t a top pick. Food wasn’t bad - but not for the price I was charged!

Wonderful French brasserie. Bread, oysters, beef Bourgogne, steak frites, and cheese selection were all terrific. Extensive wine list. When they didn’t have the initial wine I selected, the sommelier recommended an alternative and discounted it to the same price as my original selection.

I don’t understand the reservation system
They seem to show preferential treatment to select customers
I live in the neighborhood and can never seem to get a decent reservation through Open Table

Wonderful first visit to this restaurant after weeks of waiting to get the perfect reservation (its a very popular spot). The server was very attentive and personable from beginning to end. I started with Gougères, they give you quite a few of them and pretty much melt in your mouth - so good. I enjoyed the Steak Frites for my entree. Steak was perfectly seasoned with maître d’butter, accompanied by a load of crispy fries. There was no room for dessert this time but I'm looking forward to my next visit.

May be my favorite restaurant in DC. Reliably very good food, but I'm probably even more impressed with the exceptional service, from hostesses to servers to floor managers. The overall atmosphere is wonderful, really consistently lively and festive. I like that it's absolutely not stuffy formal, but almost a hyper-Disney version of an idealized French bistro, and they successfully pull off that illusion.

Always appreciate Le Dip's dependable menu. Food was great and service was great.
We were there Sat. Jan. 18, 2020. Arrived at 6:30 p.m..
Le Diplomate appeared to be full as usual even for a holiday weekend.
The noise level seemed higher than normal; was very difficult to carry on a conversation.

The food was scrumptious! Our server was outstandingly attentive! The ambience was reminiscent of Paris.
The only negative I have is the hostess who served us couldn’t hide her lack of patience with me. She seemed annoyed to take my coat to check and at the end of the meal was equally disengaged. I’m chalking it up to it being a busy night.

LE Diplomate was great as always. It’s a routine spot for my wife and I but this was the first time we did a large group for her birthday and the restaurant was extremely helpful, service was excellent and the food is always top notch. Can’t wait to go back.

Food was good but not impressive, service was average, but warmed up to satisfactory. Meals were delivered promptly, bread was very good and support staff responsive. Prices are reasonable but overall impression and total package left me indifferent.

Really great experience. We came with two little kids and the server did a really nice job of taking care of us. Not really a family Resturant so it’s really up to the server to make you feel welcome and he did a great job. I just felt that the chairs were falling apart and uncomfortable.

I’m a regular for the inception of the restaurant. You will never be disappointed with the food, just make sure the hostess knows who you are and what you are wearing once you check in for a reservation, it may be crowded.
