Le Colonial - SF

The restaurant ambiance is nice. I felt transported to SE Asia. I had read that the restaurant can get noisy inside, and as I am hearing impaired, specifically asked for a quiet OUTSIDE table when I made the reservations. When seated, they took us to a table inside. As the restaurant wasn't full, I thought it might not be an issue, but they soon filled the surrounding tables, and it because difficult for me to hear.
I enjoyed the sea bass wrapped in banana leaves. There was a rice noodle wrapped inside too, and the fish was moist and the flavor lovely. We also ordered the Brussel sprouts, which I enjoyed but my husband didn't. We started with the appetizer sampler for 2, thinking that it would be a good way to taste more things, but I was slightly disappointed in the selection of offerings (many fried, ribs boring).
Excellent in every aspect...fabulous food , attentive service, great atmosphere, convenient parking lot Can’t wait to go back there for dinner
this is a good place for a dinner for two, for four or for a larger family or a corporate event. I have had all of the above and was always satisfied with the quality of the food, service received, and the ambiance.
Loved every moment. The food was momentous and the space is glorious. Nice wine list as a bonus
We miss Le Colonial in Phila so tried it in San Fran when on vacation. Food was good, tasty, well prepared. Ceviche was excellent. Entrees were good. Wish it would return to PHL.
Everything was excellent!!!
A great looking room with quality food. You will be impressed walking into the room. The food is great and the entertainment upstairs can also be good.
Very nice food, service, and ambiance. I definitely recommend this place.
Everything was excellent!
Amazing rib appetizer- also chicken entree and stupendous Brussel sprouts!!
Amazing experience. The food was very good. The drinks were delicious. The service and the ambiance were top of the notch!
Second visit: great food and ambiance! Definitely recommend to anyone especially for business meetings. Will be back.
Lovely dining room tucked away a short walk from union square. We had crab cake for appetisers and the shrimp and garlic pasta for main...both were delicious.
Loved this place. Very great food and embiamce. The waitress staff was great and even offered to take our coats.
The food and ambience were excellent. Very tasty.
I had the steak cubes. Done to perfection. Very juicy. My wife had the white sea bass. The fish very tender. Almost melted in your mouth. These must have been seasonal or special menu items because I don't see it listed on the menu posted online.
I also had a glass of Sinegal, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2015. Excellent. The most expensive glass on the list, but worth it if you enjoy wine. $26
We shared the chicken salad. Nothing special, but still good. I say that because I've had just as good at home.
The desert was disappointing. We had the LE COLONIAL BANANA ROTIES
Caramelized Bananas on Cassava Cake - Chocolate Peanut Butter & Ginger Spice Ice Cream Orange & Lime Zest - Infused Vietnamese Coffee Condensed Milk Sauce
The chocolate peanut butter ice cream was great. Everything else was so so.
Could use updating ... slow service and not attentive...
two large parties.. yet then bring in more people to cover.
Food was excellent and waiter was nice and friendly .. alerted us to the large party but to me that should not be my issue...
I love this restaurant. It is my go-to place when I want to entertain friends from out of town. The old world interior and the reliably good food, excellent service and ambiance never change.
Had a large party. The food was fantastic and the zero drinks was good.
Amazing food and service. Some dishes a bit pricy especially when you’re familiar with general Vietnamese cuisine.
Decor and environment outstanding.
What was once a great restaurant has slipped into rudeness and inconsistency. Unfortunately, we didn’t know this when I booked a night out to celebrate a special occasion. Now I do. I won’t be back.
Great meal, wonderful knowledgeable server, and the host/hostess were also terrific! Going back soon!
Very nice evening. I felt our table was a little to close to others to enjoy and special evening with my husband. Plus our food came out so fast we didn't even get to enjoy our cocktails.
Delayed Valentine’s Day
Delicious food in a charming setting. I booked this restaurant based on positive reviews and it exceeded my expectations. Don’t hesitate to visit!
We went for Valentines Day and were disappointed. The staff seemed stressed, I think they added tables for the evening, prices were about 20% more than a regular day. The food was good but not a good value.
Great food and service
Le Colonial is a hidden but fairly well-known gem off Cosmo Place, not far from Union Square. The lush, romantic setting evokes French Indochina with ceiling fans, rattan chairs, white linen tablecloths, candlelight, and photographs of Tonkin from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The menu offers traditional Vietnamese cuisine with a splash of French influence, and the flavors are at once familiar yet surprising. From the savory to the sweet, the zest of lemongrass chicken paired with coconut cream to minty, perfectly executed fresh spring rolls preceding perhaps the surprisingly opulent seafood stew with pineapple, mixed herbs and mushrooms swirling with shrimp, sea bass, okra and celery, or maybe the Bo Luc Lac where fillet mignon cubes mingle with pickles onions, watercress and cherry tomatoes in a savory-sweet sauce, it's all first rate. Astonishingly good papaya salad and pho are side-by-side with crispy crab rolls, curries, garlic noodles and so much more. Whether one comes for the flavors, the ambiance, the desserts, and whatever the occasion, Le Colonial makes any evening very special.
Over price very small serving. Poor service. The food was good but will not recommend
It was an incredible ecperience ! We loved it ! Something so exotic for french people !
We just thought there was going to have music....
Great atmosphere and service. We enjoyed the evening!
Expirience was great, but my steak was overcooked. They compensated with free desert, so overall experience was very pleasant.
Great bar, great food, great special occasion or just for fun place.
Second visit to this restaurant and I will return again. The mixed appetizer had the best Asian ribs I have ever experienced. The venue allows you to imagine Vietnam high dining in the 1950s, perhaps. Lots of old photos on the wall....a shame that you can’t see them close up.
Great food and service. Really enjoyed ourselves and looking forward to coming back soon.
We always come to Le Colonial before going to a show at The Geary St. Theater. We started our dinner by sharing the yummy potstickers. My husband had the seabass, which he said was delicious. I had the appetizer crab cakes, as my main course. We shared the coconut rice. My only complaint is that the coconut rice did have a little bit of shredded coconut on the top....but the rice did not seem to have a real coconut flavor. For dessert, we shared 2 scoops of ice cream: coconut and chocolate = great combination! The service was excellent and the setting is very comfortable.
Poor service. Papaya salad lacked flavor and the chicken curry needed more vegetables
Perfect. Food was great, ambiance was great. Will definitely be back.
Horrible experience! We were told we could come first come first served to the Lounge just to find out it was reserved. Not sure if they understand what first come first served means. They ruined our surprise gathering for a very special milestone birthday celebration.
Will not be going back there again.
