We were surprised and delighted to see the lovely interior and taste the delicious food of Le Colonial. Truly a neighborhood gem and a fun surprise to discover in an otherwise dark alley. We felt like we had stepped into another time and place - like Paris or Miami. Everything was fantastic. Only negative interaction was with one particular waiter who seemed disgruntled and refused to ask the chef about a potential dessert alteration for an allergy. ("Well, I'd need to go talk to the chef about doing that, so.... just coffee then?"). Really inconsistent with the rest of the staff, who were great, and the otherwise lovely ambiance of the establishment.
Le Colonial will impress you right when you walk in and go up the stairs. You will see a grand patio with lush plants, plush sofas and outdoor dining tables as you pass through on your way to the main entrance in front. Unfortunately, that left us wanting more and we were disappointed right when we walked in and saw that spacing was cramped and the noise level was very high. The decor is classy with a mix of Vietnamese and French motifs, but the main reason we came was for the food, which overall disappointed. We had crab cakes for appetizers, which were very good. The entrees we had were the Bo Loc Luc (Shaken Beef) and the Salmon with papaya salad and mango sauce. We wanted the beef cooked medium well and somehow that came out charred on the outside. The dish was also a bit over salted. The salmon dish was just okay, nothing that stood out. The best part of the meal was the dessert crepe we had, which was very soft, smooth and went well with the sauce. When the best parts of the meal are the appetizer and dessert, it just leaves you wanting, especially when the bill comes to a bit over $100. We would go back only to try their pho, but other than that not much else.
We picked up a friend from SFO who was passing through on an international flight. We made reservations at Le Colonial for 10:45 PM. This is their last seating. Once I made the reservations online, the restaurant called me right away to let me know that the kitchen closes at 10:45 pm and to try our best to get there by 10:45 pm. We dashed over and arrived right at 10:45 pm and although we were warned ahead of time, we were rushed to place our orders. Our waiter was pleasant and tried his best to be helpful. I think the restaurant should reconsider their last seating to allow their customers more time to order. I literally had 5 minutes to decide what to order and it was a little bit stressful. Maybe they should make their last seating at 10:30 to avoid the rush. The food we ordered was delicious. Thankfully, I have been to this restaurant a hand full of times over the years. Can't go wrong with the cubed filet mignon and the sea bass! The fried rice, noodles and appetizer platter are all wins. Enjoy your visit and try to avoid the last seating OR know exactly what you're going to order ahead of time.
We always go here before attending a show at the Geary Street Theater. We shared a yummy appetizer: fried shrimp and scallop rolls. My husband ordered the steak and had to return it...the meat was very tough! He ordered another main dish which was very tasty. For my main course, I had the mini crabcakes, an appetizer....very nice! We were seated, for the first time, in the back dining room...quiet, nice service...but very dark! Good place for a tasty dinner!
A very secluded gem[was Trader Vics, way back], great flavors are abundant, as part of a French/Vietnam interpretation---The CHEFS Appetizer , Is not to be missed[5 items, for two people ]---Tate, our server was a real pro, and very helpful!!! --Simply, a great food and wine experience, and worth my very rare , complete 5 star rating--J--
Met up w/ inlaws from LA so it was already a special evening. 3 of the 4 of us r vegans which was accommodated beautifully. All the food was well prepared w/ lots of flavor. There was a mixup on one order which was graciously handled. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Can't wait to return.
We were visiting SF from LA for a 4 day weekend and one of my co-workers highly recommended having dinner there. We re so happy we did.

We were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere of this restaurant. There is outdoor dinning on a patio with heat lamps as you enter; the inside space is also much nicer than your average Vietnamese restaurant. The prices are also above average.
I was disappointed, however, with the food. I expect French Vietnamese food to have more French flair. Also, usually Vietnamese food has much lighter sauces and incorporates more fresh vegetables than Chinese food. At La Colonel, the dishes and sauces seemed much closer to Chinese fare. My tofu dish came with a very heavy brown sauce. The veggies we're cooked and suspended in that heavy sauce. The dish was served on lettuce that was limp. The tasting appetizer entree (for 2 that my partner wanted to try) had spring rolls, another fried vegetable thing and spare ribs.-- not enough Viet items. The cocktails were $15 dollars but very good.
Pretty good, but given the many options in the area, Le Colonial does not stand out. The restaurant essentially offers Vietnamese cuisine with an upscale twist. Unfortunately, the focus seems to be primarily on making things sound and look fancy rather than adding something that would elevate the food above and beyond your average Vietnamese Pho kitchen. In other words, take your friends or colleagues to Le Colonial for the setting, the cocktails, the nice presentation, but don't expect to be blown away by the food. Most of it is okay, but far from special.
Unique place. Throw back to the days of Trader Vics, polynesian type bar restaurant. Appreciate the different levels on which to dine which allows one to tailor their experience: covered patio (light), upstairs bar (dark), dining room (dark-candle-lit). Seems to be a comfortable venue for older folks, which is nice insofar as low noise level.
First off, 98% of the menu is gluten-free at this Vietnamese/French influenced restaurant. I was so thrilled that it took me awhile to choose what to have as opposed to most restaurants where I only have a few options! While it is a bit expensive, it was worth it. All the food we had was wonderful; the waitstaff wonderful and didn't bother you if you had just taken a bite, they waited until it was proper for you to answer them! Now that is a new one on us. Fun cocktails, menu and dessert menu. We didn't have dessert as we were full. You can so easily share items as they are generous. Definitely going back.
We arrived about 30 minutes early, so went upstairs to the bar, ordering drinks and 2 appetizers. There were only 2 other tables in use, but our appetizers were given to another table. It took quite awhile to get replacements, making us late for our downstairs reservation. No offer of any comps for the wrong service/late food was offered or given.
When we finished our appetizers, we checked in at the front. The downstairs had only one table seated. We were placed directly next to this table, a quite large party ( 8 chairs I think) that included 2 infants and several young children. We very quietly asked to be seated somewhere else, not trusting that our dinner would not be interrupted with loud chatter and crying. The person seating us loudly asked us why, standing right next to the large group, and then with poor grace seated us only 2 tables away. I was amazed at the lack of care he displayed and seemed to indicate we should just take what ever was convenient to the staff. We were obviously a couple out for a nice dinner, not expecting a family restaurant atmosphere.
If we had not come from a distance, been hungry and without our own transportation, we would have walked out. Our meal was only fair, the lamb was raw in the middle, not medium as ordered. For the price and the obvious un-busy state of the house, it really should have been perfect.
Le Colonial has been a mainstay in our SF restaurant book. It is now out of our book.
