Very good French-inspired food in a charming setting with very attentive staff.
A most pleasant dining experience.
Delicious!! Server was very friendly and helpful giving recommendations for the charcuterie board we ordered. Portions were a good size and cost was great too! Would definitely go again!
Every thing was perfect! Great reception. I love your new Menu. I wanted to try so many courses, I will definitely return! Main main course was absolutely fantastic!
Great service, food & wine! Wonderful early dinner with my sister before catching a performance at the Isabel. Love Kingston!
Great food & service!
I made reservation for 2 the night before. We arrived and were escorted to the very back table, next to the back door at table for 6. We asked to move and they accommodated us but we question why a reservation was placed there when patrons coming in off the street were better suited. The selection of food for ‘happy hour’ has changed dramatically since December and not for the better. Choices quite limited and on of them is fries. Just expect better things from Chien Noir
Fantastic meal, yet again!
Thanks to Michelle and Josh
This was our second time here and it was fantastic!!!! My Wife had the Mussels and they were Great. I had the had the lamb gnudi and loved it. We started with the Charcuterie board and highly recommend the lamb prosciutto!!!
Dinner and service were excellent. Quite pricey, but worth it for a special occasion.
Food, cocktails and service was excellent. We loved the experience and had a lovely evening. A true gem in Kingston’s restaurant scene
Really good spot. We were in Kingston for a family getaway and popped in for a dinner with our two young girls.
Loved the ambience, our waiter was very friendly and helpful, and the food was really good. We started with the tomato and cheese & french onion soup and both were great. Our mains (burger and tuna tartare) were also very well done. The poutine with duck confit was originally served cold, but they immediately got another piping hot order out that was very tasty. They even took a side off the bill without being asked to, even though we were more than happy with the second poutine.
They are happy to accommodate kids and have an extensive kids menu. Le Chien Noir is more of a romantic dinner, quiet adult gathering type of place than a family restaurant, so something to keep in mind (we were the only ones with kids).
I attended Le Chien Noir with my partner and two friends from out of town. We enjoyed oysters and appreciated the selection, although limited. The beer tartare was a hit, as was the seasonal salad. The mussels were just okay. The local beer was tasty and the wine selection was decent. Overall, we had a good experience with no major complaints about the food and drink, but the service was slow (from start to finish, and seemed out of touch).
Excellent food in a cozy environment. Had the valentines surf and turf meal special. It should be available on the main menu as it was spectacular!
Dorie is a great host and the waiting staff is attentive and friendly. My wife and I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who asks for a great place to eat in downtown Kingston.
Was a lovely dinner, great spot for a Date night. Really enjoyed the wine on Tap. Would go again and would recommend to all friends.
We were there for Sunday lunch which is the brunch menu. I had the buckwheat wrap - the meat was very flavourful and made the dish. I wasn't so keen on the patato galette - came cold to the table and the potatoes were undercooked to my liking. The service was great, definitely still on our "go to" list.
The menu sticks to French cuisine. Trying something new, I had a Boar chop and it was delicious. The staff is attentive but doesn't hover. The cocktail selection was unique, I stuck with wine because I wasn't sure the flavors would meld well with the boar but it gave me something to look forward to coming back and trying.
I would definitely come back either to have a drink and a bite at the bar or for another special dinner.
Amazing as always
We love going there any time of year
Great food, ambience and service. Welcoming place to dine
Outstanding. A bit tight in space and would easily get loud at times, but the food and service were out of this world. Snowlicious was such a great idea and what an amazing value. Wonderful place.
Nothing was offered to celebrate birthday, despite notifying them in advance. Just a simple happy birthday would of been nice
Food was very disappointing ... the food was cold and not that flavourful especially for the price point. I wouldn't go back.
Last minute decision to go out for a late dinner on Saturday night. Had a drink at the bar while waiting for our table. Bar staff were extremely friendly, patient and engaging in conversation. The same with the wait staff. Food is ALWAYS great!
Fantastic birthday dinner, great food and service.
Food was ok, very expensive for the quality
Typically love this restaurant, have gone many times over the years.
Saturday night was an exception; very poor service - if i am going to splurge on champagen and oysters (which Chien Noir have the best in this area) it would make sense to bring them at the same time. Our table was right in front of the dishwasher - not the greatest ambience. My girlfriend has the steak frites; worst piece of steak ever delivered at a restaurant.
Will make sure future reservations include - do not put me at the dishwasher location otherwise dont take my reservation.
Let me preface this with the fact that I have not sent food back in the last 17 years. This is the first time I have felt obliged to review any restaurant.
The place looked very nice, but when we arrived for our 8PM reservation we had to wait another 15 minutes. *cue the Jerry Seinfeld reservation holding debate*.
We ordered drinks at the bar but then were quickly moved to our table. For some reason, the drinks took about 20 minutes to bring over.
After having ordered, we waiting over an hour for our appetizers which were oysters and raw fish which do not require much prep/cooking time. The oysters were good. The yellow fin tuna tartare was the worst fish ceviche I have ever had. It was completely tasteless and thrown onto a plate as if it were leftovers with half a stale, sad cracker.
Now an hour and a half into our meal our mains arrived. We ordered the mussels and frites and the House parpadelle. I wish I had photos to share. The pasta was way too over cooked and was all stuck together. The scallops and shrimp looked paler than someone on their death bed and can only be described as tiny frozen faux seafood, from the look of it. It was topped with canned peeled tomatoes of which I noticed the nub of the tomatoes in.
The total price for our meal was $97 (had we not returned items). I felt insulted when I saw that price for what we received. Especially given that this is a student town- people should be getting quality for their food on their nights out. Although our waitress did understand and took back the 2 items and took them off our bill, it was very uncomfortable to be put in a situation where we had to return 2 plates of food during the same meal on a date.
My two cents. Just no care was put into the food whatsoever. Very disappointing. Many great restaurants in Kingston, will not be returning here again.
Mixed experiences in this restaurant. The last two the food has been poor and cold with a long wait.
I gave it another try.
I won’t be back.
Always a great night out. New menu looks good. The Coq Au Vin was delicious!
Increadible food - the duck confit surpassed expectations. Will definitely be going back.
Absolutely delicious. Each entree - fish, seafood, lamb, and chicken was well presented, fragrant, we'll prepared, and offered a range of texture and flavour. good portions, filling.
Been here many times before and the food and service have generally been good. Most recent visit (Dec27th 2017) the service was very poor. Waited over an hour for our meals to arrive. Wasn't that busy and we were a party of 5. Couple seated next to us (and after us) had finished their meals before ours arrived. Waitress was oblivious. My meal arrived cold (probably sat under a lamp for 30 min). Others were hot. I chalk this up to new and perhaps inexperienced wait staff. Nevertheless a disappointing experience. Would probably hit Olivea or Casa or Chez Piggy before I consider returning.
Had a fabulous night with our adult children. Delicious cocktails and extremely well executed French fare.
The food was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Very enjoyable. We have never been before but well worth it.
My sister was home from BC and we wanted a special meal out and Chien was perfect. We enjoyed a great bottle of wine, great food and a comfortable table for quiet conversation.
Had the French onion soup, but it was surprisingly not flavourful and the ratio of onion to cheese and broth was off. The duck was cooked very well, but the sides were incredibly disappointing. A large portion of bland mashed potato and unseasoned cooked Brussel sprouts. The food was not worth the price. If you are looking for high end French cuisine look elsewhere.
We used to eat here two to three times per year, but this was our first time with their new chef. Some of our meal was quite good, but not outstanding as it used to be. My main was over cooked and they forgot to serve it properly (they brought out sauce later because they must have forgotten it in preparation).
Service was fine (not great) but there was one instance when the hostess greeted a party at the door but their table was not yet ready. They spoke rudely about the people that had not left their table yet and discussed ways to make them uncomfortable so they would leave. Joking I am sure, but didn't make me feel welcome to enjoy my time there.
Went for Christmas lunch with friend ,staff friendly and helpful suggesting menu options.Had the special with couscous and chick peas very tasty and something different.Nice wine selection. Will definitely go again for dinner as the menu has changed and looks very interesting.
Amazing as always!
wonderful dinner pre Christmas getaway from Toronto
