Le Baratin Ratings and Reviews
You have to like the fact that you hear French being spoken in a French restaurant. Staff are friendly and highly professional. Le Baratin has a genuinely French bistro vibe and the food is pure, unpretentious but excellent quality French comfort food. The Boeuf Bourguignon, coq au vin, salade de chevre and magret de canard are all done exquisitely well. A great neighborhood gem.
The meal was spot on again, and the service was great. Very attentive to any needs and the tip is to get there early if you can. Does get packed! If you are the carb eater, order the pizza and an order of escargot. The garlic sauce in which the escargot is cooked in, will pair perfectly on the pizza to provide a stimulating taste in your mouth. The croque appetizer is delicious as well! Everything on the menu is delicious, you can't go wrong!
I made a reservation on Open Table and they put us in the corner table. Near the end of the meal, while we were enjoying dessert, the waiter asked us to move to another table to accommodate another person. We were offered free glasses of champagne for our trouble, then were asked to leave soon as there were more guests that would need that table. I get that it was New Years Eve, but why is their overbooking our problem? We're not slow eaters, either! I have recommended this restaurant to others looking to get together with friends from out of town, or have a nice meal with a friend. I'm really disappointed that we were chased out of there after spending so much money. The food is good, but it wasn't worth the stress of feeling unwelcome. I'd probably come here with a friend and sit at the bar and order the baked brie, but my last visit was so discouraging I'd rather visit a less obnoxious place.
Very good French food, warm welcome, good service, good value. The food was much better than a dinner we had that same week at Benoit. Highly recommended: magret de canard (beautifully seasoned and presented) and bœuf bourguignon. Our group of 4 was at first hesitant because of the lively bar scene upfront, near our table. While the noise level was more than we had expected on a week night, as long term Villagers, we enjoyed the neighborhood ambience that is missing in most area restaurants. Go for the good food and the cozy warmth on a cold winter night. You will have a fine meal without the pretension of small plates, toasted coriander, and meat cooked the way chef likes it.
We ate very early and the restaurant very cozy and quiet for the first 3/4 of our meal. The place gets a very active bar crowd so the last 1/4 of our meal it was a bit loud. The very was very good. My Mahi Mahi special was excellent and the our other two diners had the salmon which was good. The salads were excellent as was the bread. Looking forward to returning to try the other salads and entries.
Came here with another family for brunch, 4 adults and 4 kids. We were late for our reservation and they still took us which was nice, but unfortunately the rest of the meal suffered from a really rude waiter.
The food was slow, and when a couple who'd arrived after us got their food first, we asked to check on ours and were told "it's coming, it takes time." Fair point, but why go out of your way to make us feel bad for asking?
My eggs and spinach gratin were delicious but cold in the center, and I asked for them to heat them up a little more. I can't think of another time in my life I've sent food back honestly, but it seemed like it would be so easy to fix. After 15 minutes, I asked after my food, since everyone else was finishing up, and the waiter was sarcastic again, muttering and commenting as he walked away, visibly annoyed. It was just so unnecessary and demeaning. I won't be back.
I love patina and old world charm but this place could use a freshening. The young French staff was attentive and the food was good. They didn’t seem to understand that the music was too loud and the music was objectionable- rap music didn’t seem to suit the place and the use of the N and the F word was most unwanted. My guess is that they had no idea since English was their second language at best.
Justifiably popular Greenwich Village bistro. Our Saturday night reservation was honored as soon as we walked in. Staff was friendly, courteous and efficient. My wife and I shared the salade de chevre...delicious. For my entrée I had the wonderfully prepared skate (Raie aux Capres) and my wife had the duck breast (Magret de Canard) which was done to perfection. The bread basket was fresh and crisp and the accompanying butter had just the right amount of salt. We can't wait to return.
We went to Le Baratin on Saturday December 2nd and had an excellent experience! The food was absolutely delicious, the ambiance was fun and "energetic"! We would recommend the beef dishes for the entre, and the baked brie was delicious. Thank you Le Baratin for the incredible food and fun time - we enjoyed watching all the birthday revellers with the sparklers, very impressive!
We will be back!
Le Baratin is one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants and it just keeps getting better. Every time we bring friends they love it too! It's like Paris with the sweetest staff anywhere. The prices are very fair considering the high quality and excellent preparation. It's a tiny place but easy to get in on a weeknight which is also amazing for the West Village. If you want a night in Paris and to be pleasantly surprised allez a Le Baratin!
I would have said the food was outstanding except that everything was oversalted. I am a "saltaholic" -- always reaching for the table salt, so coming from me, that says something. Everything, from the salad dressing to the sauces was FAR too salty. In every other respect, the food was excellent.
Very authentic French bistro feel. Most of the patrons are French and speaking French. Went with a large group and we had a nice time. The waiter did a great job of keeping up with our large table and everyone enjoyed the experience. The croque monsieur was so delicious as was the truffle pizza. Definitely recommend it!
One of my favorite restaurants in the city. Perfect for popping in on a casual night out, and outstanding for a special occasion. Just had my parents 45th anniversary dinner here and the evening was flawless. The staff is so accommodating. We did a custom tasting menu and they let me bring in balloons. Just the nicest people and the food is always perfection. My parents were so happy, truly a night to remember! Love Le Baratin!
I'd recommend getting there early if you want quiet and well-lit. After 7:30/8:00 it got crowded and loud, and they lowered the lights every half hour or so. But when we first arrived we had the place to ourselves, it was quiet and bright, the waiter was attentive and friendly. We'll go back for sure, at 5:00 or 6:00pm to take advantage of our own private bistro.
