Lawry's The Prime Rib - Chicago Ratings and Reviews
Been going to this restaurant about twice a year for forty years. Have been disappointed maybe twice in that time. Tonight was the third disappointing visit. Began when we sat in bar area while waiting for table. Bar waiter totally ignored us for a half hour, before asking if we wanted anything. Once seated at table, the drink order was not what I ordered and had to wait over 10 minutes to get my drink. Next, I ordered salad with a certain dressing, but salad was made with a different dressing, not what I ordered. Next, the cut of prime rib was substandard, not close to being a good quality. Tasted good, but very poor (large end piece). Lastly, it was our wedding anniversary and I had indicated that in the reservation. No recognition of the event until another waitress reminded our waitress.
Waitress had 11 years experience, but many rookie mistakes made. Very disappointing.
It is our annual tradition to celebrate my husband's birthday at Lawry's. We love the location, the holiday decorations and the strolling Carolers! Unfortunately this year there were some misses for this traditionally nice dining experience. The bread that was brought to our table was so dried out and hard that it was not even edible. Additionally, and for the first time, the famous spinning salad was also terrible. Completely wilted, tasteless and again we weren't even able to eat it. The meal was saved by the delicious prime rib! That was excellent. For a $200+ meal, we were overall disappointed this year. Perhaps we will try again next year...but maybe not.
Lawry's has become our Christmas tradition. Carolers and spectacular Prime Rib. It's also a fun trip back to a time time when folks would drink a bunch of bourbon and eat a big steak. The only things missing (thankfully) are the smell of cigarettes and hairspray. Whenever I'm there I feel like I'm in an episode of Madmen.
We were disappointed in the inexperience of our waitress. Although, she was nice, she was definitely not Lawry’s quality. Also when we went to the bar for an after dinner drink, it was apparent that the bartender had never heard of warmed over cognac. Took 20 minutes and several conversations to obtain the drink. Also had overhear the bartender berating a cocktail server for not ringing up drinks either on the rocks or straight up correctly, as they cost more if they are straight up.....really!!!!!
My husband and I had dinner at Lawry's to celebrate our recent wedding. It was a very special evening with phenomenal food, exceptional service by Mary, gorgeous dining room with lovely Christmas decorations and live carolers. It was perfect. We were treated as special guests and we enjoyed a complimentary delicious dessert. We will certainly return in the future!
We've visited most of the Lawry's locations nationwide over the past several years. They always offer the very best, traditional prime rib dinner and this visit was another exceptional meal. The only disappointment was delay in seating us...we had a confirmed 7:45 reservation and did not reach out table until 8:15.
Very poor service, room was cold, manager acted like he didn’t care about our complaint. He offered me a candy cane ! after I completed describing my concerns.
THis was at least the fifth time we have dined at Lawry’s during December as a tradition....the Madrigal Carolers, etc. we know it was once better.
We won’t be back....poor service and cold room were factors, but attitude of manager pretty much sealed it.
Went to celebrate wife’s birthday. Reservation at 7:30 but had to wait until 8pm to be seated. Guest with later reservations were seated before us. Arrived at table and only 2 place settings were set for 4 people.
Had to ask for silverware. Then had to ask for napkin. Then had to ask for bread plates. Then had to ask for two more waters theee times before we got it. Food was the highlight of the evening. I was extremely disappointed in everything else.
We try to go annually for the carolers. The food is always outstanding and plenty to take home. The valet is the worst part of the whole experience. There are people who wait for 2 hours to get seated, highly recommend a reservation. As busy as it seems, there is definitely no urgency when your are being served, it is relaxed. Love the carolers, nice Christmas atmosphere.
Food was amazing as always!
The service was extremely disappointing. Our waitress dropped/spilled several things. It was a special occasion and our waitress was not very accommodating. The choral singers were singing and she kept interrupting when we were trying to listen. Lastly, did not get our drinks until after the salad was served. Very disapppointing service overall.
We go every year during Dec. This has been my favorite restaurant for years. I went with my aunt as a child, and we are now taking our grandchildren. The menu is classic prime rib and the restaurant is an exquisite former mansion/home. If you want to feel special and eat an amazing meal, call ahead an make reservations.
A very nice dinner. The prime rib was the best we've ever had. It was almost fork tender. It was all fresh and hot. Spinning salad bowl was delicious. Yorkshire pudding was perfect accompaniment to the prime rib. Service was not rushed at all. Wine list is very well priced. Had Christmas carolers there during our visit. Ambience is quiet, great for conversations. We'll definitely be back, and highly recommend.
Christmas atmosphere make the visit special for us. The menu is simple and the portions are almost generous. I have the feeling that the prime rib cuts have shrunk in size over time (we have been at least annual visitors since 1977). I never understand this type of frugality. The food is one of the least expensive factors in serving a patron; just raise the price $1 and add a few oz. (don't subtract rather). But I digress. Carollers were as always a highlight, food was good, service good, ambience annoyingly loud.
Started out wrong when drinks ordered from bar before being seated never made it to the table. Menus were passed upon seating but it was 15 min before anyone paid attention to us.
Finally the wait staff came and took water order. The sparkling water was served awhile later but the still water never came. We then ask another wait staff for help since we felt abandoned.
She did her best to accommodate us and straightened the mess out in the bar etc in a very professional manner. The spinning salad was not fresh and prime rib was nothing special.
I will not return.
