Even though it might not be the coolest of the East Village Italian restaurants, Lavagna is right up there with the best.

About Lavagna

Lavagna opened its doors on February 1st 1999.The restaurant offers casual Italian trattoria fare at moderate prices. The vibe is candlelit, cozy, with an old wood burning oven, exposed brick walls, a pressed tin ceiling and a small wine bar where one can dine also. A wall of French doors swing open in the warmer weather to a seasonal sidewalk cafe of 20 seats.
The kitchen concept is to create dishes traditionally Italian, emphasizing fresh, seasonal ingredients and product of the highest quality.
The menu highlights include homemade pastas, a wood oven roasted fish for two, roast pork chop, baby rack of lamb and of course the rigatoni with sweet and spicy sausage that has become a classic over the years.
The wine list has been a yearly recipient of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 2002 and it focuses on hard to find wines from regional Italy along with other international selections.

Lavagna is by far my favorite restaurant in NYC. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu but the rigatoni is the best!!!

The food was incredible with amazing homemade pasta. The prices were reasonable especially for nyc. It was a little cramped and noisy but we enjoyed the energy and people watching.

Deliciously authentic Italian gem in the East Village. So glad I brought my parents (who are from out of town) here. Attentive service, great food and wine recommendations, and great flavors.
Our waiter even noticed we were celebrating a birthday and put a candle on the dessert without us having to ask :) Such a pleasant meal. Be sure to make a reservation, they get busy!

Absolutely great neighborhood spot with amazing food. Our waiter was a “10”! Loved meeting Django the owners dog outside. Only complaint was the owner left us waiting 20 mins past our reservation time and was kind of rude about it. There were empty tables.....

Based on a friend’s recommendation we made the 25-minute trip from Times Square to Lavagna. Boy oh boy was it worth it! The food was fabulous! The steak in particular was great, but so was everything else we tried. The place is somewhat small and quaint. It’s a great atmosphere for visiting with friends. The owner was very attentive and made sure we had what we needed. We couldn’t have been happier and I would DEFINITELY go again. It’s a winner.

Awesome food and a great wine list. We each ordered a different pasta so we could taste them and we didn't know which one we liked best. The pork chop at the next table looked amazing too.

Very overpriced for the food. Disappointed since it was recommended. The ambience was poor and the fixtures old and bathrooms decrepit. I was expecting a stellar meal and experience but felt pushed into getting side orders and desserts. The food was marginal at best.

Lavagna never disappoints. The menu is small, but the selection is varied and EVERYTHING is cooked to perfection; there is something for everyone on the menu. The specials are extremely creative and their pork chop is simply one of the best. The wine list will blow you away. I've been to upscale steakhouses that cannot compete with the wine list a Lavagna. Although their desserts look wonderful, I always get the cheese platter to help me finish the remainder of my lovely wine.

First and foremost, the food was prepared and presented to the highest standard (Monkfish, Spaghetti with Veal Meatballs, Pasta, octopus carpaccio and special beet salad). The ambiance was inviting, as the space was intimate and dimly lit with just enough room between tables but not an inch more to spare. It appeared to be well staffed with wait staff and other unidentifiable staff members ensuring everything was tended to at all tables.

That being said, we were seated 40 minutes later than our reservation time due to slow turnover of tables. The hostess was very apologetic and offered us a complimentary dessert for our patience. Once seated, the gentlemen's tone was very curt and rushed to take our orders. He was helpful with selecting a wine (we are more familiar with French and Australian varieties), and although good, it was nothing like we had described we were interested in drinking with our meal.

So, the experience was mixed, but delicious enough that I would return to give it another try.

It makes the experience great. Lavagna has the best pasta special everytime I eat there.
I hope no one sees this so it stays the neighbor gem that it is.

Lavagna was a fabulous dining experience for a small get together for my birthday. The staff was really courteous and accommodating to our needs and even rearranged some tables on the fly during peak hours on a Friday night. Most importantly, the food! It was a wonderful smaller menu with fair prices and excellent portions. Highly recommend this place for an intimate weekend dining experience.

Lavagna never disappoints. Everything on the menu is done to perfection and their specials are amazing. This time I had the special of shredded lamb neck and goat sausage ... I was licking the plate! The wine list at Lavagna rivals any upscale steakhouse. It it virtually impossible not to fine something to your liking in your price range. The staff is extremely attentive and very knowledgeable. This restaurant is not very big and it fills up quickly so plan ahead especially on weekends.
