Lavagna opened its doors on February 1st 1999.The restaurant offers casual Italian trattoria fare at moderate prices. The vibe is candlelit, cozy, with an old wood burning oven, exposed brick walls, a pressed tin ceiling and a small wine bar where one can dine also. A wall of French doors swing open in the warmer weather to a seasonal sidewalk cafe of 20 seats.
The kitchen concept is to create dishes traditionally Italian, emphasizing fresh, seasonal ingredients and product of the highest quality.
The menu highlights include homemade pastas, a wood oven roasted fish for two, roast pork chop, baby rack of lamb and of course the rigatoni with sweet and spicy sausage that has become a classic over the years.
The wine list has been a yearly recipient of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 2002 and it focuses on hard to find wines from regional Italy along with other international selections.

Lavagna Ratings and Reviews
Over priced and over rated. Food was certainly tasty and the room is quaint and cosy. But the service is too too cool with too many staff hovering round the tables. The main gripe is the speed of service. To fast for comfort. A risotto starter appeared within minutes of ordering and mains delivered immediately our first plates cleared. Not a relaxing evening.
We took a friend’s recommendation for a intimate and great Italian dinner and we are glad we did. Our table was waiting for us, the atmosphere was cozy on a bitterly cold night and the service, just attentive enough. It was notable how many servers and chefs were working a restaurant with maybe 12 tables. Reasonable prices, great wine list and the pasta was superb!
We are from out of town and found Lavagna on Trip Advisor. It was a late night dinner and the table was ready when we arrived. Server was very good and the owner helped us pick out wine. The Rigatoni was amazing, can't wait to have it again.
This is a place you need to try!
The food and ambience were excellent. The pace was rushed, though. Our salad course arrived about one minute after the cocktail was served. The pasta and main courses, which we had expected to eat in sequence, arrived at the same time. Though we enjoyed every dish, we definitely felt rushed through the meal.
Don't get me wrong, the food was good...but the portions were really small. Their wine list is admittedly extensive, but quite pricey (in our defense, we don't live in the city); there's a bottle for $1,000 which is maddening but not so much so the restaurant's fault as it is man's ever-astonishing ability to overprice the simplest of goods.
My fiancee and I ordered two pasta entrees, but upon receiving them realized they were far too small, and had to order a third pizza entree for us to split. Even after this meal with a bottle of red wine and bread, we found ourselves hungry. It was a nice, cozy restaurant, and I wouldn't not go again, but I'd look elsewhere for better Italian first. No offense.
Food is delicious. Service needs to be slowed down. Food comes out quickly and you feel like there is no time to sit and enjoy the courses in order to turn over the table. You can have three courses and be out in an hour. That is not the way it should be at this price point.
It is always a pleasure to go to Lavagna. The food is amazing (rigatoni pasta and appetizer mussels are incredible) and the staff is always so nice and accommodating. The restaurant is very cozy and eating there is always a wonderful experience. Also, reasonably priced.
Lavagna always delights and did so again on this trip.
Food was great and the staff is more than accomodating on allowing smaller portions so you get in all your favorites. Great assistance with an overwhelming wine listing. Their recommended bottle was an excellent choice.
Deliciously authentic Italian gem in the East Village. So glad I brought my parents (who are from out of town) here. Attentive service, great food and wine recommendations, and great flavors.
Our waiter even noticed we were celebrating a birthday and put a candle on the dessert without us having to ask :) Such a pleasant meal. Be sure to make a reservation, they get busy!
Absolutely great neighborhood spot with amazing food. Our waiter was a “10”! Loved meeting Django the owners dog outside. Only complaint was the owner left us waiting 20 mins past our reservation time and was kind of rude about it. There were empty tables.....
Based on a friend’s recommendation we made the 25-minute trip from Times Square to Lavagna. Boy oh boy was it worth it! The food was fabulous! The steak in particular was great, but so was everything else we tried. The place is somewhat small and quaint. It’s a great atmosphere for visiting with friends. The owner was very attentive and made sure we had what we needed. We couldn’t have been happier and I would DEFINITELY go again. It’s a winner.
