About Lavagna - Washington DC
Lavagna is a neighborhood gathering place where you'll always find delicious food & the best of company.
The beautiful, Genoan village of Lavagna has long been known for its abundant slate production, quarried in the Capenardo and S. Giacomo mountains nearby. Over the years, "Lavagna" became synonymous with "chalkboard".
The menu at Lavagna portrays our idea that food should be just like a chalkboard: simple, fresh, and innovated often.
Lavagna relies on a network of trusted local farmers for the ingredients that form the basis of our simple, contemporary Italian dishes. Our ever-changing menu reflects the best that the season has to offer.

Lavagna - Washington DC Ratings and Reviews
Great place for a date or special occasions. I took my wife there for her birthday and she loved the place. She ordered the pappardelle shrimp and it was cooked perfectly. I had the filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes & asparagus, which were amazing. Prices were very reasonable. The wait staff are friendly and personable.
I’ve been here a bunch of times for brunch and dinner. The mascarpone pancakes are my fave! I wish the bottomless brunch limit was 2 hours instead of 1.5 but there is plenty to do in the neighborhood, so you can always find somewhere else to go to close by after brunch is over.
Reliably satisfying food, good cocktails, wine selection, very attentive and pleasant servers. Only one suggestion- the focaccia type bread is very tasty but it would be nice to have an additional choice for those on the table who might prefer a less greasy option
Wish I could remember the server's name (he used to be an artist and he has a son!) because he was amazing. His recommendations were excellent, he has a great personality and made us feel warm and welcome. I definitely will come back. My meal was so good I didn't save any to take home and the bread was irresistible. Altogether yummy. And fun.
We had the best time at Lavagna! The food was amazing, and the service was perfect. Thank you to Mario who went above and beyond to share his knowledge of the menu and the kitchen with us, and to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. I’ll definitely be going back!!
I went here with a group of 10 for a birthday dinner. They were very accommodating when I had to add an additional person last minute. The service was great and the food was phenomenal. They were even great about allowing us to split the check. I recommend making a reservation before 9 though because they close at 10.
I have always enjoyed this restaurant. The scallop appetizer was very good. I ordered the chicken-polenta & brussel sprouts. I’ve always had pasta on previous occasions but felt like trying something new. The chicken was dry and a bit bland. The polenta was also very bland. The sprouts were very good, a lot of flavor! I will go back but will stick to the pasta dishes.
On a recent repeat visit with family, the staff were exceptionally accommodating and friendly. The most difficult issue you will have is deciding what you want to eat, as everything we have had has been amazing. Bring an appetite, the portions are a perfect size but the food is filling- a great combination!
A comfortable little place on Barracks Row; excellent no frills, home-made pastas. Fresh focaccia w/oil & vinegar served upon being seated. Starters of calamari, nicely fried w/tasty dipping sauce; a unique and pleasant take on bruschetta; and maple bacon on polenta (whoa, a hefty starter!) were quite satisfying. Lamb pappardelle and lobster risotto w/nice chucks of lobster were standouts. In particular, for me, risotto gets boring after a few forkfuls, but not this one! Tiramisu provided a happy ending. Our server was delightful and wanted to make sure we were enjoying everything. She offered to decant the wine we brought which was very much appreciated. The corkage policy is extremely reasonable. Nice cocktails as well. Enjoyed the Lavagna, on the sweet side, so goes down quite easily!
Second time eating here. First was brunch a few weeks ago - it was exceptional - food and service. This experience was dinner. We sat upstairs - one of a few tables. Bartender was also server - she was fine, knew her information, kept it professional. Food runner was too speedy and literally dropped plates and bounced. Had to ask for pepper and did it myself. I love this place so I will be back - service was average and I was looking to impress my company.
Lavagna never disappoints! A group of friends and I came here for a final birthday celebration after a long weekend visit. The atmosphere was calm and quiet, in a quaint way. The food is always amazing (we all had different handmade pastas) and we came on a Sunday when they were doing their half-priced bottles of wine deal - which is always phenomenal!
Im Italian and i can say the spaghetti and the sauce were 2nd best I’ve ever had. Wife and granddaughter had pesto and ravioli dishes and thought they were great.
Wish they would kick it up a notch with offering small salad with meal. Should have asked, wasn’t offered . Would definitely gi back
The home made pasta was excellent and the flavors were outstanding. I had a parpadelle with a pepper and lamb sauce that I would definitely go back for. My son had the bolognese that was rich and flavorful. The cocktails were seasonal and tasty. The space is rather intimate, with a small outdoor area.
Went for Sunday Brunch. The service was good.... We had a group of 6, so a 20% gratuity was included. The $12 bottomless mimosa were available for 90 minutes. This is a plus, however they had triple sec in them and there was no way around the premade batches of the super sweet exilir. The waiter/bar tender was very accommodating and took the drink off. I am not a fan of triple sec in my mimosa... so a negative for me. There was no beer on draft, so I didnt partake in any drinks. I had the chicken and waffles for $19.00 brunch... They gave me a small waffle with 3 pieces. I was anticipating having 4 pieces of a standard waffle maker...they were bland and the chicken was a tad bit greasy for my taste, but edible. The the rest of the plate was full of fruit. The fruit was ok. Over all, I think if I had drank the liquor, I wouldn't have noticed the food wasn't so tasty.
