About Lavagna - Washington DC
Lavagna is a neighborhood gathering place where you'll always find delicious food & the best of company.
The beautiful, Genoan village of Lavagna has long been known for its abundant slate production, quarried in the Capenardo and S. Giacomo mountains nearby. Over the years, "Lavagna" became synonymous with "chalkboard".
The menu at Lavagna portrays our idea that food should be just like a chalkboard: simple, fresh, and innovated often.
Lavagna relies on a network of trusted local farmers for the ingredients that form the basis of our simple, contemporary Italian dishes. Our ever-changing menu reflects the best that the season has to offer.

Lavagna - Washington DC Ratings and Reviews
The home made pasta was excellent and the flavors were outstanding. I had a parpadelle with a pepper and lamb sauce that I would definitely go back for. My son had the bolognese that was rich and flavorful. The cocktails were seasonal and tasty. The space is rather intimate, with a small outdoor area.
Went for Sunday Brunch. The service was good.... We had a group of 6, so a 20% gratuity was included. The $12 bottomless mimosa were available for 90 minutes. This is a plus, however they had triple sec in them and there was no way around the premade batches of the super sweet exilir. The waiter/bar tender was very accommodating and took the drink off. I am not a fan of triple sec in my mimosa... so a negative for me. There was no beer on draft, so I didnt partake in any drinks. I had the chicken and waffles for $19.00 brunch... They gave me a small waffle with 3 pieces. I was anticipating having 4 pieces of a standard waffle maker...they were bland and the chicken was a tad bit greasy for my taste, but edible. The the rest of the plate was full of fruit. The fruit was ok. Over all, I think if I had drank the liquor, I wouldn't have noticed the food wasn't so tasty.
Brunch food was only ok. Scrambled eggs were tired and dry. Omelets were also dry. Quantity of food was fine. Bacon was good. Mimosa were OK, but could have been colder and a bit stronger. There are other brunch locations within a couple of blocks that are a better value and with better food.
We really enjoyed our visit to Lavagna. The food was excellent. Balanced seasoning, good ingredients, beautiful presentations. The four of us shared a pappardelle with braised lamb as an appetizer. Just enough for the four of us. We each had something very different as a main course, and everyone raved about the quality of the food, portion size, etc. Our server Asia was very helpful at every step, helping with selecting a bottle of wine, quick and efficient replacement of eating utensils after our starter of the pappardelle, and attentiveness. She really made the experience special and fun for us.
Service was rushed - clearly was trying to turn over the table. Had to ask multiple times for cream to be brought out.
Food was good, but nothing to write home about -- not worth the price, given the portion size.
Hostess was very accommodating. Very good coffee cocktail served by upstairs bartender while waiting for outdoor seating to open.
Noise level is pretty high, and while the food is good, some of it is a bit on the skimpy side...2 medium scallops as an appetizer at those prices is a bit much, for example. Overall, satisfying food and decent service...friendly is a bit harried and confused sometimes.
The restaurant menu is entirely comprised of fresh food from local farms, and in those terms it was a success. And for most of the evening, we were encouraged to eat leisurely. It was a Friday night and we arrived in time for our 7:30pm reservation. Everything was going well until we asked for the bill and apparently were the last diners @ 9:50pm. No problem with the bill, which came to over two hundred dollars for four people (included a bottle of $40 chianti) but once the bill was paid, we could not believe the rudeness that followed. Aside from not offering any coffee refill, the sign from outside the door was brought inside and it was quite evident the staff wanted us to leave. To say, again, this was just before (or just after) 10:00pm -- but on a Friday night when every other restaurant on the street was still open at least until 11:00pm. It was very unfortunate as we had been enjoying a reunion of old friends, but subsequently we will never go back.
This was my second time at Lavagna. Good brunch options, both food and drink. I had the smoked salmon omelette, which was tasty and stuffed, with salmon, Gouda and spices. The roasted potatoes were very good. I also had a mixed berry Bellini -- superb! The service was very good as well. Great visit overall.
Food was incredible and authentic - homemade pasta, carbonara was authentic and delicious. Lobster risotto was also delicious and a healthy portion. My friend, who I vegetarian, had the eggs Florentine which he enjoyed. Their house-made ketchup is pretty good too. Went for brunch for a friend's farewell. Accommodated a late arrival for the reservation. We arrived around 140 and another friend at 150 for the 130 reservation. They made sure we had food before the kitchen closed for brunch at 230 and they refilled my friend's bottomless mimosas for $12 6 times! making sure he received a full 90 mins, even though the kitchen closed. the waitress was very sweet. I want to return for dinner to try short tip/lamb. It's a great spot! Oh and I'm curious because they have these giant glass jars at the bar where they infuse vodka w/ raspberries and another one w/ horseradish. Very cool place. Highly recommended.
