About Lavagna - Washington DC
Lavagna is a neighborhood gathering place where you'll always find delicious food & the best of company.
The beautiful, Genoan village of Lavagna has long been known for its abundant slate production, quarried in the Capenardo and S. Giacomo mountains nearby. Over the years, "Lavagna" became synonymous with "chalkboard".
The menu at Lavagna portrays our idea that food should be just like a chalkboard: simple, fresh, and innovated often.
Lavagna relies on a network of trusted local farmers for the ingredients that form the basis of our simple, contemporary Italian dishes. Our ever-changing menu reflects the best that the season has to offer.

Lavagna - Washington DC Ratings and Reviews
My girlfriend and I went to Lavagna for dinner on Valentines day earlier this week. The tables were sitting so close together it seemed like the other couples next to us might as well join in our the conversation. The large younger group seated by our tables basically did. They were extremely loud when we were there attempting to have a romantic dinner .
The waitress took 20 minutes to bring any bread after dropping off our soup which was cold by then. Rarely would she come by to check out water glasses. We might've each had 1-2 more glasses of wine at dinner if she would've checked with us more regularly. When it came to dessert, they ran out of the chocolate breading pudding we wanted to try. I don't mind paying more money at nice restaurants on special occasions, but I expect the service and environment to be much more suitable. Especially on Valentines day.
We went for the valentines day special. I was a little late but my husband and daughter seated so that was awesome. Our waitress was awesome. The food was okay. We each had one of the selections off the pri fixe menu. We were not that impressed with the food based on the reviews I was expecting a little more. It was a great value and I am glad we tried this place but not sure if we wil return.
Lavagna never fails to deliver great food. I met 5 colleagues for Sunfay Brunch. We each had something different and everyone enjoyed their meal. I will say the fruit plate is HUGE! You definitely get your money's worth.
The mimosas are always good with more champagne than OJ. You wouldn't know it's premixed in a pitcher. It's $12 or $15 (cant remember) for 2 hours and they are more than happy to keep topping off your glass (without you stalking the server).
I will definitely return soon.
Got the braised short rib. I’m pretty sure they dropped the asparagus on the way over as I only had 2. Were they decoration? It would be hard to believe that they were as there were no other vegetables on the plate, just a short rib, some apple sauce and 2 apples. Also, the short rib was a little over cooked. Not impressed.
So I got there late, but my party was there on time and seated. The server was visibly annoyed with me and wasn’t very welcoming(awesome way to spend my birthday). I asked for a mimosa and proceeded to was for quite a while,he actually forgot and it wasn’t until I got his attention that he remembered. We tried to lighten the mood and joke w/him,however he didn’t even smile at any of us. For a second we thought it was directed at only us,but after watching his interaction w/other tables,it seemed like that’s just him. If you are incapable of being hospitable then being a server is the wrong field. The food was actually good, but his attitude simply ruined the experience for us.
The service was excellent. The food was just ok. The fried ravioli was a bit bland and the sauce it came in has a very smokey flavor. Same for my meal as well as my partners- all of the food had a smokey flavor which didn’t compliment the meal. We wouldn’t return.
We couldn’t get a reservation at another restaurant and started looking at others close by. Lasagna was a great find! We loved every bit of our experience. The food was delicious (shrimp with paparadelle) and the waiter was super attentive. We left knowing we’d be back again!
It was my birthday, and I hoped to be treated specially, and that didn't happen. After dinner, the waiter asked what I wanted for dessert. I said "Oh, it's my birthday." He said that he knew but that they had three desserts, and which did I want. I ordered, and my friend ordered. He brought the dessert with a candle stuck in mine and said "Happy birthday. I don't sing" rather matter-of-factly. I have to say that something was missing there.
It didn't seem like a real Italian-American restaurant to me. The food was good, but I think the portions tended to be small--especially the dessert. My cheesecake was very sweet like it came out of a box. My friend's chocolate pudding looked like it came in a Nyquil-cap sized glass.
My friend said her spaghetti was very good, and it looked good. My ravioli was good, but I think I should have gotten at least three cheese ravioli--not two. Also, it had too much sauce on it--as though I would mistake the sauce for pasta.
Great place for a date or special occasions. I took my wife there for her birthday and she loved the place. She ordered the pappardelle shrimp and it was cooked perfectly. I had the filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes & asparagus, which were amazing. Prices were very reasonable. The wait staff are friendly and personable.
I’ve been here a bunch of times for brunch and dinner. The mascarpone pancakes are my fave! I wish the bottomless brunch limit was 2 hours instead of 1.5 but there is plenty to do in the neighborhood, so you can always find somewhere else to go to close by after brunch is over.
Reliably satisfying food, good cocktails, wine selection, very attentive and pleasant servers. Only one suggestion- the focaccia type bread is very tasty but it would be nice to have an additional choice for those on the table who might prefer a less greasy option
Wish I could remember the server's name (he used to be an artist and he has a son!) because he was amazing. His recommendations were excellent, he has a great personality and made us feel warm and welcome. I definitely will come back. My meal was so good I didn't save any to take home and the bread was irresistible. Altogether yummy. And fun.
We had the best time at Lavagna! The food was amazing, and the service was perfect. Thank you to Mario who went above and beyond to share his knowledge of the menu and the kitchen with us, and to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. I’ll definitely be going back!!
I went here with a group of 10 for a birthday dinner. They were very accommodating when I had to add an additional person last minute. The service was great and the food was phenomenal. They were even great about allowing us to split the check. I recommend making a reservation before 9 though because they close at 10.
I have always enjoyed this restaurant. The scallop appetizer was very good. I ordered the chicken-polenta & brussel sprouts. I’ve always had pasta on previous occasions but felt like trying something new. The chicken was dry and a bit bland. The polenta was also very bland. The sprouts were very good, a lot of flavor! I will go back but will stick to the pasta dishes.
On a recent repeat visit with family, the staff were exceptionally accommodating and friendly. The most difficult issue you will have is deciding what you want to eat, as everything we have had has been amazing. Bring an appetite, the portions are a perfect size but the food is filling- a great combination!
