Lavagna - Washington DC
The beautiful, Genoan village of Lavagna has long been known for its abundant slate production, quarried in the Capenardo and S. Giacomo mountains nearby. Over the years, "Lavagna" became synonymous with "chalkboard".
The menu at Lavagna portrays our idea that food should be just like a chalkboard: simple, fresh, and innovated often.
Lavagna relies on a network of trusted local farmers for the ingredients that form the basis of our simple, contemporary Italian dishes. Our ever-changing menu reflects the best that the season has to offer.

Excellent meals, disappointing beer selection but good wine options
Excellent food, service was very good. It was a Saturday night and they were pretty busy. The staff is limited due to covid and our server said it wasn't usually this busy but I could tell they were really having to run to keep up. There are 5 tables outside, and inside about 7 tables (all spaced 6 feet or more apart). The Tuscan Shrimp was fabulous! Handmade pasta was excellent, and they have a gluten-free (and very tasty) pasta available as well.
Food was delicious, service was perfect, and the ambiance of outdoor seating was romantic.
Great experience, very helpful service and did not rush us as lots of folks have been doing during Covid. Great food and great place to get together!
I have been to Lavagna 3 times now and every meal is memorable. Outstanding fresh pasta with locally sourced ingredients at a reasonable price. Half priced wine night on Wednesday and Sunday nights with a wonderful staff. What more could ya ask for?!
Nice dinner at Lavagna with friends. We had the inside to ourselves. The food and service were both really good.
Friendly weight staff. Good wine at reasonable price. Excellent food
It was a lovely evening and we ate outside, a plus during COVID times! Our server Nathan was helpful with menu choices and attentive wi Th out being intrusive. The portion were generous and delicious. I would definitely return.
Every time I come to DC I must visit Lavagna! The food is delicious, service is amazing and worth the trip for any meal. They make you feel like family and their food is always wonderful. The wine selection is superb as well. I highly recommend and wish I lived closer to go more frequently!
Amazing birthday dinner for my husband. Our server Nate recommending a great vegan dish. Great service, great ambiance and great food.
Great food and service!
Phenomenal food, phenomenal atmosphere, phenomenal service. All around a fantastic experience!
Great service and food I personally loved my spaghetti bolognese. My partner on the other hand thought his pesto was a bit strong
Always great food and service...half price bottle of wine on Sunday...can't go wrong....
Pasta and service was great! The lobster bisque wasn’t worth it though. Was barley any lobster. The wine was great as was the pasta. Would return 9/10.
Very friendly staff and fun menu with fresh locally sourced ingredients
Very nice experience with good food and very friendly staff.
Patio seating was great, well-spaced out, food was absolutely delicious (as always), and service was fabulous - considerate, attentive, personal - our server was ready with bug spray when he simply overheard us mention mosquitos, conscientious about mask and glove wearing, and happy to help celebrate my friend's birthday! We got complimentary tiramisu at the end of our meal and the server, I, and everyone else on the patio sang to my friend and made her night :D. Thanks for a wonderful evening Lavagna!
Nice outdoor seating space, quick service.
Love the people and the food. Always friendly and top quality
We ate outside on the patio for one of our first covid restaurant meals. Great service. Checked in often but not too much. Everyone wore PPE and made us all feel very safe throughout. And holy hell, the lamb ragu was insanely good.
My husband and I have lived in this area for years and we go here all the time. You can taste that the food is high quality, and the pasta is handmade. Order anything because every dish is DELICIOUS!! Also, some restaurants get snippy when you ask them what farms they buy from, but Lavagna has a beautiful artistic map of the farms they source from right on their website. My kind of place! The staff is extremely knowledgeable about the wine and everything else! Expect not only the highest quality food but also the highest quality, engaging conversation. It's not easy to stay in business during these trying covid times but they are making it work. I hope they continue to do so, as the neighborhood, and our lives, would not be the same without Lavagna. THANK YOU!!!
This place is QUALITY food from scratch with amazing staff !! Lets help to keep it alive in the neighborhood !!
Excellent service and fresh food. The team made us welcome on the patio with all sanitation and social distances observed.
Outdoor table was socially distant. Food amazing... the lamb pappardelle was incredibly delicious.
I wanted to like this restaurant as it is walking distance from our home. One of the things I really wanted to try was their burrata. Our server did not know they were out of it and came back a good 5 minutes later to tell us that they didn't have any. That's okay as it happens in restaurants. I decided to try the bruschetta. It was a huge disappointment and I would never order it again. It was thin slivers of toast with a smear of lemon ricotta cheese. The cheese was topped with a balsamic glazed relish which was tasty but not enough. On top of that four cold halves of cherry tomatoes. No basil, no onions, no seasonings. My husband had the bass which was a decent sized portion but a bit dry. The patio seating was fine but definitely no ambiance. When I think that we spent $90 (includes tip) on bruchetta, calamari, bass with broccolini and two glasses of wine I cringe. My husband would still like to go back to try the Lamb papparadell to give Lavagna another try but I think I will just order water and keep him company. Sorry Lavagna!
Lavagna was wonderful. It was my husband’s birthday. We shared the beet salad which was great. I had the pesto penne with chicken and my husband had the spaghetti bolognese. Both were outstanding. The restaurant wasn’t busy bc of the shutdowns, so plz go visit them so they can stay open. Brandon our server was very attentive.
Delicious, as always! We enjoyed our "final brunch" before hunkering down at home. It was great to have an awesome meal and drinks served by our favorite server, Chad. See you on the other side!
Reunited with some friends over brunch, had a delicious meal, several mimosas, and plenty of jokes with Chandler—he’s a gem and they should treat him well.
Great staff service and good food. Reasonably priced. Would recommend to anyone.
Great food. Lots of selection. Had pesto, gluten free pasta, lamb, and shrimp risotto. All tasted great. Risotto was best.
Wonderful dinning and very family accommodating at Lavagna.
Our group of 4 each had something different & we were all happy with our food! Waiter was very nice & answered any questions we had! Gave a good recommendation for a particular beer that was enjoyed! The tiramisu was shared by two of the group and they loved it! Very nice dining experience!
La Vagna never disappoints! Always great food, always great service, and a low enough noise level that a group of friends can hear each other’s conversation and have a wonderful evening. One of my favorites!
MUCH better than our first two visits a few years ago. The food was as good as other nearby but much more expensive Italian restaurants. The only problem was with the walk there. The corner of Penn Ave and 8th Street is a circus of yelling, screaming, begging scary people.
We had a big party and all seemed very pleased with their meals and experience
My husband and I had dinner there before attending a movie nearby. The food was very good and moderately priced. The service was excellent and the place had an overall friendly vibe. We will definitely go back.
Good variety on menu.
Our server was great....personable and organized. Nate I think is his name.
I'd come back....with guests!
We went to Lavagna for our anniversary dinner and had a wonderful time. We received excellent service as usual and the staff and our server in particular definitely made us feel appreciated and special. We look forward to our next meal there!
Great spot for scratch made italian food. Can’t go wrong with any pasta dish. I had the lamb chops which were amazong
