Lavagna - Washington DC
The beautiful, Genoan village of Lavagna has long been known for its abundant slate production, quarried in the Capenardo and S. Giacomo mountains nearby. Over the years, "Lavagna" became synonymous with "chalkboard".
The menu at Lavagna portrays our idea that food should be just like a chalkboard: simple, fresh, and innovated often.
Lavagna relies on a network of trusted local farmers for the ingredients that form the basis of our simple, contemporary Italian dishes. Our ever-changing menu reflects the best that the season has to offer.

Great ambiance with food to match. Service staff is attentive and friendly.
Tasty dishes accompanied by delicious wine. Great service.
Beautiful fall evening and all the outdoor tables were taken, so we dined indoors, just the four of us, so very quiet. Our waiter made excellent wine suggestions. And the house-made pasta dishes were delicious!
Great service and the very best of food. The wine selected fit the taste and the price was reasonable. All four of us thought it to be an excellent evening.
The pasta is all homemade and is to die for. The waiters were very helpful navigating a robust wine list, and half-price bottles on Wednesdays and Sundays make this a great value!
Was told the kitchen was about to close at 9 even though we were allowed to reserve a table for 8:45.
Great wine selection. Delicious meal but food menu could offer more choices.
Lavagna is our new favorite neighborhood restaurant (RIP Montmartre). Due to Covid, they have a limited menu, but everything we have had has been delicious. Love the Bolognese! The service is personal and efficient. The place is quite unassuming but just really good.
We love Lavagna! We’ve been here a few times and we’ll be back for sure. We love the Tuscan Shrimp and the pesto. The tiramisu is to die for and keeps bringing us back!
I ordered the carbonara and it was excellent. Great service.
Such a good spot if you’re looking for a delicious meal! Staff is always friendly and attentive, and does anything and everything to make you feel welcome and cared for! We will be returning!
The food and service were absolutely outstanding!
The staff here is very professional, friendly, and prompt. Restaurants in the area should take a page out of their book. The pasta is made daily in-house. The Rigatoni is to die for!
Boring menu, little choice, underwhelming and forgettable food. Wine list is amateur. Service is good. I do not recommend it.
Food and service were both phenomenal!
All the servers were very attentive. Carbonara and pesto pasta were delicious. Half priced bottle of wine on Sunday and Wednesday were a nice extra. Casual atmosphere for dinner with friends, family or a date night
Exceptional dinner, and Brandon’s service was wonderful.
Had penne al pesto and spaghetti bolognese. Top class! Worth every penny.
Trimmed menu because they were understaffed as an effect of the pandemic but we still had a great experience. We were a party of 5 and the place was busy but we were still given an excellent service by the restaurant staff. Food was amazing especially the Shrimp Risotto.
Always. Always a delicious and delightful evening at Lavanga #yum 😋
We found this place with a Google search for places near navy yard. We could not have been more impressed! The service was amazing, the food was one of the best pasta dishes I’ve ever eaten, and the environment was peaceful and soothing. I would highly recommend you stopping at this place! The calamari was the best I’ve ever had.
Great homemade pasta! Excellent environment, and an easy walk to Nats park!
This is a great restaurant with wonderful food.
The food was DELICIOUS and the staff was incredibly kind. We found our new date spot!
We had a wonderful dinner here! Service was more than accommodating for our table of substitutions - very knowledgeable about the wines, food and cider. Everything we ordered was delicious! We will definitely return here. The restaurant has a nice comfortable atmosphere.
Some of the food was really good like the carbonara and the lobster bisque but the burrata was really bad and the risotto wasn’t as good as we expect
Brandon was an excellent server and helped us out along the way! The food and wine were both delicious! Will definitely be back for more!
Always wonderful! All the dishes are amazing! The staff is engaging - my favorite spot!
Food and service were excellent. I enjoyed the Rigatoni Pesto and my husband love the Rigatoni Sausage. The brussel sprouts were delicious too. We'd definitely eat there again!
As always the food is great and the service was fantastic. The Lamb Papardelle is an order every time for me.
Wine excellent, waiter lovely, food a big let down. Huge pile of pasta on plate (Way to much) and was swimming in oil Very off putting
Another easy and delicious evening. BIG thanks to Brandon for his always “on it” service.
My mom and I enjoyed Easter dinner at Lavagna. Their food is always delicious and we appreciate the service that Nate and his colleagues provided.
The food here is heavenly. The service is impeccable. Staff is like family. Only complaint is the limited menu (totally understandable given COVID), bring back the ravioli! Please! That said, one of the best restaurants in the city. No question.
Great service from Brandon. We came to celebrate a birthday, and they did a great job making us feel special and well attended to. Wednesdays and Sundays they offer half price on their bottles of wine
This was not a very good experience or food compared to when we were there pre-COVID. I hope that it can return to its old self soon.
Very friendly and patient server. My friend is currently avoiding all kinds of food ingredients, but they handled it. We both enjoyed our meals. It was very quiet. This place deserves to be more busy! I'll be back.
Lavagna is a DC hidden gem!
Had a wonderful time!!
We love this place. The food is always excellent, the service is always attentive and polite, and they always suggest a great bottle of wine and never try to oversell you.
