Lavagna - Washington DC
The beautiful, Genoan village of Lavagna has long been known for its abundant slate production, quarried in the Capenardo and S. Giacomo mountains nearby. Over the years, "Lavagna" became synonymous with "chalkboard".
The menu at Lavagna portrays our idea that food should be just like a chalkboard: simple, fresh, and innovated often.
Lavagna relies on a network of trusted local farmers for the ingredients that form the basis of our simple, contemporary Italian dishes. Our ever-changing menu reflects the best that the season has to offer.

Wonderful food! Excellent value for money. My wife and I had dinner on a Saturday there with friends of ours and our six-year-old (we brought his Kindle and headset, so he had something to do). We loved the ambiance of Lavagna and their staff, which is very friendly and knowledgeable.
The bottomless mimosas were amazing. The food is over priced and mediocre. The mimosa made up for it.
Fantastic home made pasta!!! Super cute and cozy Italian restaurants with great wine and awesome staff.
This was a fine venue for a nice Italian meal without bells or whistles in Barracks Row. My companion started with the fried calamari and I had the caprese salad. Both were fine, although the salad could have benefited from fresher mozzarella and some balsamic. For dinner, my companion had the spaghetti bolognese and I had the ricotta ravioli. Both were fine again. The sauce is good -- not too sweet. This was a nice place to get together with a friend in the neighborhood for a meal. The price was a little on the high side but not so much for the neighborhood.
It was just ok. I've never felt more pressured to vacate in 90 minutes. It wasn't even that crowded. Food was luke warn and very pedestrian. Maybe dinner is better???
I thought the “spicy sausage” from the “scratch” kitchen was a little commercial, based on a lifetime of homemade Italian sausage...,, but all in all not bad. Service and ambiance were great, my wife and I sat for awhile, read the paper, relaxed and enjoyed a great morning. Chicken and waffles get a 5 star from my wife, very picky. The portions were just right. All in all my wife and I are at a 4.5 and would definitely go back.
Casual outdoor patio option was perfect. You are on a busy street, but great food and service.
The food at Lavagna is amazing. I’ve never had a bad meal there. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the food and wine menus, and the owner is often greeting customers at the front door. I’ve generally gone on weeknights when it isn’t so busy, which I personally prefer. Overall, I’ve been there half a dozen times and have always had a good experience.
Our first visit to Lasvaga was terrific. We went with a friend with Italian roots and he was impressed as well. The Salumi plate was excellent as were the ravioli and rigatoni entrees.
We had a great time at Lavagna. The food was very flavorful and clearly handcrafted. Our waitress was lovely. We had a bit of a rough uber ride getting to the restaurant, and my partner had a bit of an upset stomach. Our waitress got him a club soda with bitters that fixed the problem almost instantly. From there, we had a lovely meal with extremely attentive service. If you sit outside be sure to bring bug spray. DC in the late summer means the mosquitoes are out!
Very accommodating and attentive server. She was very kind to our grandchildren.
The menu should add a couple of specials to add variety and/or change it seasonally. It has not changed in years!
They have great brunch! Gets a little noisy though.
Excellent customer service, kind of a normal brunch, fried chicken bone-in for waffles....ehhh?
Great little spot though. Coffee could use a change.
Somewhat disappointed after reading all the positive reviews. Our dinners of short ribs needed more apples and sauce; the smallish serving of duck was cooked medium (prefer more rare) and ok but not wow. Wine by the glass good, with attempt to upsell. Next time we'll try the pasta, if we return.
Lovely upscale Italian restaurant with delicious food
Went on a date but was a casual comfortable place that we both enjoyed. Food was superb, service was wonderful, overall experience was great. Would highly recommend!
Best lamb chops on the hill
Lavagna was the perfect spot for dinner with family. We opted for an inside table to be in a quieter environment but the patio looked like a great spot to dine, drink and people watch! The food was superb and the service was as well.
This is one of my boyfriend and I’s favorite restaurants because it never disappoints. The food and service are consistently good. It was an added bonus that Lavagna extended their restaurant week special.
Great food and outstanding service. Very nice brunch menu.
We came here for Sunday brunch and had a delightful experience. The staff was very welcoming and attentive. Drinks were top notch, and it’s hard to pass up the bottomless mimosas. Food was delicious and included a nice variety. Would highly recommend!
Food, service, everything was just great. My party had the rigatoni with pesto and chicken, the ravioli and the spaghetti shrimp. Excellent!
Great food and special wine selection in a very nice ambience and perfect location out of downtown
The dishes we had were excellent. The Pappardelle Lamb and the Rigatoni Pesto were well balanced and complex. The pesto was certainly good enough to stand without the chicken or sausage. The salumi platter came with a generous variety of accompaniments to make a variety of tasty bites. The wine list is lean but well curated.
Service was a bit overbearing and felt over-scripted. I'm personally tired of the trend of asking to take away plates. Unless it's empty, just leave it. If it is, quietly take it unless there's a move to block.
While I said moderately noisy, the ambiance and acoustics were great for having a conversation without needing to raise your voice.
We went for restaurant week dinner, which coincided with our anniversary. It also happened to be half priced wine, so we got a really good deal. The server was very knowledgeable of the menu and of the wine. We had a great time!
Our server was great and very knowledgeable. The food was amazing. We went during restaurant week and on a Sunday where they have half off bottles of wine so we got a really good deal.
Great food, good deal for bottomless mimosas, and our server was friendly and attentive. Happy we were able to get a reservation for a large party last minute.
Food was very good, drinks were good. Tables a little close to each other but would definitely go back.
Freshest pasta around-- everything was delicious and we appreciated that the restaurant week menu was the regular menu. The only drawback was how close together the tables were. Even though the restaurant was not close to being full we were seated inches from another table full of guests which was distracting, especially as they commented on everything we ordered.
brunch was good but nothing spectacular. however, service was quick and courteous. good overall. great bottomless deal.
Really great food and service! Don’t skip dessert because it’s amazing
The spaghetti bolognese was really delicious. Simple yet perfection.
First of all the food was AMAZING! It was sooo soo good! I was in awe!
Will definitely come back!
Super fun and amazing food
Great fresh food with fun outdoor tables. Julie was a great server
I went here awhile ago and it was great. However, there must be different management now. It was deserted on a Saturday night and the food was just not as good: the bread was bad, the shrimp was overcooked, the duck was tough, and the flavors just weren't as fresh. Server was nice but he was also the bartender so we had gaps of time with no service. Probably won't be going back.
I've been a few times and it has yet to disappoint. The fresh pasta is always 100% worth the trip. They often have a special on wine, which I really appreciate (if you buy the bottle you get it for 50% off, which is a great value since getting 2 glasses can cost the same as just getting the bottle). The service has also always been great. I will keep going back.
The food was great. The ravioli appetizer was really tasty. Tuesdays have half priced bottles of wine which was a nice surprise.
Loved the smoked salmon omlette! Great service and ambiance.
