Lavagna - Washington DC
The beautiful, Genoan village of Lavagna has long been known for its abundant slate production, quarried in the Capenardo and S. Giacomo mountains nearby. Over the years, "Lavagna" became synonymous with "chalkboard".
The menu at Lavagna portrays our idea that food should be just like a chalkboard: simple, fresh, and innovated often.
Lavagna relies on a network of trusted local farmers for the ingredients that form the basis of our simple, contemporary Italian dishes. Our ever-changing menu reflects the best that the season has to offer.

The food was amazing, fresh pasta and perfectly seasoned and not overly heavy. The staff was attentative and made and made us feel welcomed.
Lavagna is one of my favorite restaurants. It never disappoints. The food is always solid/tasty and the service is great.
Excellent food and friendly service made a Sunday dinner into a memorable date night! The prices were appropriate for the food type, and we are itching to go back and try some of the pasta dishes! The short ribs were accompanied by an exceptional sauce (savory but ever-so-slightly sweet), and the plate with the duck was practically licked clean by the time we were done with it. A warm ambiance makes this appropriate for both a special occasion and just popping in for dinner.
In town for short visit with family. Place was recommended by young friend. Like the house made pasta, had the Bolognese. And the duck breast, very good.
Service was excellent, casual place.
The people at Lavagna were kind and efficient. It was a really nice place to have dinner. The pasta, however, was very poorly cooked.
Not a ton of food options, but they really keep the bottomless mimosas coming. Small quarters and a lot of bigger tables so it does get very loud.
Absolutely wonderful. The waiter was the best
Amazingly accommodating and gracious servers that include Brandon, Chandler and Willie. The menu is limited but what they do with it is wonderful, all except the shrimp that often has a medicinal flavor. Also, inexplicably, they did not have any dry whites on their list on our last visit.
The best Italian food that I have come across in DC, with a great wine special on Tuesdays!
The food is delicious. The apple salad was very good. We had the papardelle lamb and the radiatore primavera. Love the homemade pasta.
Chandler was a great server. He was kind and knowledgeable. The food was amazing and they had a great selection of wine and cocktails. The homemade pasta was divine. I will definitely come back.
Brunch is always solid here. Their portions are large and the carbonara is top notch.
Food and service are always top notch!
The mussels with beurre blanc and the calamari were excellent. The shrimp pasta was disappointingly under seasoned. Needed salt! Excellent staff and nice ambiance.
Great pasta in a nice part of DC. Started the night off here before bar hopping down the street.
Great brunch. The food was outstanding.
HORRIBLE!! I was in from out of town. The chicken and waffles was tasteless. Waffles were like frozen eggo waffles. Chicken had no taste and I went to hen quarter the previous day and got better quality food and was asked if I wanted white or dark meat. With a bigger portion for the same price. I just was not impressed. Visit dc often and I will not be back at all.
Overall Good. Felt a bit rushed however. Food was very good. Good atmosphere.
Wonderful food! Excellent value for money. My wife and I had dinner on a Saturday there with friends of ours and our six-year-old (we brought his Kindle and headset, so he had something to do). We loved the ambiance of Lavagna and their staff, which is very friendly and knowledgeable.
The bottomless mimosas were amazing. The food is over priced and mediocre. The mimosa made up for it.
Fantastic home made pasta!!! Super cute and cozy Italian restaurants with great wine and awesome staff.
This was a fine venue for a nice Italian meal without bells or whistles in Barracks Row. My companion started with the fried calamari and I had the caprese salad. Both were fine, although the salad could have benefited from fresher mozzarella and some balsamic. For dinner, my companion had the spaghetti bolognese and I had the ricotta ravioli. Both were fine again. The sauce is good -- not too sweet. This was a nice place to get together with a friend in the neighborhood for a meal. The price was a little on the high side but not so much for the neighborhood.
It was just ok. I've never felt more pressured to vacate in 90 minutes. It wasn't even that crowded. Food was luke warn and very pedestrian. Maybe dinner is better???
I thought the “spicy sausage” from the “scratch” kitchen was a little commercial, based on a lifetime of homemade Italian sausage...,, but all in all not bad. Service and ambiance were great, my wife and I sat for awhile, read the paper, relaxed and enjoyed a great morning. Chicken and waffles get a 5 star from my wife, very picky. The portions were just right. All in all my wife and I are at a 4.5 and would definitely go back.
Casual outdoor patio option was perfect. You are on a busy street, but great food and service.
The food at Lavagna is amazing. I’ve never had a bad meal there. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the food and wine menus, and the owner is often greeting customers at the front door. I’ve generally gone on weeknights when it isn’t so busy, which I personally prefer. Overall, I’ve been there half a dozen times and have always had a good experience.
Our first visit to Lasvaga was terrific. We went with a friend with Italian roots and he was impressed as well. The Salumi plate was excellent as were the ravioli and rigatoni entrees.
We had a great time at Lavagna. The food was very flavorful and clearly handcrafted. Our waitress was lovely. We had a bit of a rough uber ride getting to the restaurant, and my partner had a bit of an upset stomach. Our waitress got him a club soda with bitters that fixed the problem almost instantly. From there, we had a lovely meal with extremely attentive service. If you sit outside be sure to bring bug spray. DC in the late summer means the mosquitoes are out!
Very accommodating and attentive server. She was very kind to our grandchildren.
The menu should add a couple of specials to add variety and/or change it seasonally. It has not changed in years!
They have great brunch! Gets a little noisy though.
Excellent customer service, kind of a normal brunch, fried chicken bone-in for waffles....ehhh?
Great little spot though. Coffee could use a change.
Somewhat disappointed after reading all the positive reviews. Our dinners of short ribs needed more apples and sauce; the smallish serving of duck was cooked medium (prefer more rare) and ok but not wow. Wine by the glass good, with attempt to upsell. Next time we'll try the pasta, if we return.
Lovely upscale Italian restaurant with delicious food
Went on a date but was a casual comfortable place that we both enjoyed. Food was superb, service was wonderful, overall experience was great. Would highly recommend!
Best lamb chops on the hill
Lavagna was the perfect spot for dinner with family. We opted for an inside table to be in a quieter environment but the patio looked like a great spot to dine, drink and people watch! The food was superb and the service was as well.
This is one of my boyfriend and I’s favorite restaurants because it never disappoints. The food and service are consistently good. It was an added bonus that Lavagna extended their restaurant week special.
Great food and outstanding service. Very nice brunch menu.
We came here for Sunday brunch and had a delightful experience. The staff was very welcoming and attentive. Drinks were top notch, and it’s hard to pass up the bottomless mimosas. Food was delicious and included a nice variety. Would highly recommend!
Food, service, everything was just great. My party had the rigatoni with pesto and chicken, the ravioli and the spaghetti shrimp. Excellent!
