Lavagna - Washington DC
The beautiful, Genoan village of Lavagna has long been known for its abundant slate production, quarried in the Capenardo and S. Giacomo mountains nearby. Over the years, "Lavagna" became synonymous with "chalkboard".
The menu at Lavagna portrays our idea that food should be just like a chalkboard: simple, fresh, and innovated often.
Lavagna relies on a network of trusted local farmers for the ingredients that form the basis of our simple, contemporary Italian dishes. Our ever-changing menu reflects the best that the season has to offer.

Food and service were amazing per usual, especially the service to our group of 8. Please never change the pancake recipe!
Outstanding all the way around!
Decent food, kind of pricy for quite basic italian. Atmosphere leaves something to be desired, a bit older and by 10pm on Friday we were the only ones left in the restaurant...
Food (and drinks) and service excellent. Love the local and housemade food and drinks!
Fabulous service. Choose the pasta. ANY pasta. Desserts were not remarkable
Great for dinnrr
Great service and delicious food. Great time to meet friends
We had fantastic service! The chef remade one of my friend's meals after she had a slight complaint (and did not expect them to make it all over again). They seemed happy to do so.
The restaurant was nicely filled without being crowded. The wine list--all Italian--was superb. The items ordered by the group included Italian dishes that I had never seen before. All were really flavorful, of good size, and well-plated. There was no happy-hour price on wines by the bottle. Sad, but they have to stay in business. Our waiter, Mario, was efficient and clear. He could explain the items on the charcouterie (salumi) board with pride of place. Outside of a cheese maker, I don't think I had ever seen house-made goat cheese. Great! If I get another group of 6 to take back, we surely will be there again.
Both my daughter and I had pasta and got a bad stomach ache later that night. We think it was something in the sauce or pasta. She had the Bolognaise and I had the primavera that had some red Sauce, which I found unusual for a primavera
Lavagna is truly worth the visit just for the bottomless mimosas! They are made with triple sec and are dangerous!
But the food - ah, so delicious. We went to brunch and as a table, we tried almost every item on the menu. The risotto and spaghetti carbonara are creamy and flavorful. The salmon omelette offers huge portions and great taste. At the end, they brought out a pumpkin spice cheesecake - amazing and devoured in less than a minute.
To top it all off, the service was amazing. Our waitress always had a smile on her face and was one of the most pleasant people I had ever met. Our mimosas were always topped off, the food arrived so quickly and everything was just perfect. We will be back soon!
Wonderful service, excellent food, and half price bottle of wine on Sundays :) highly recommend.
This was our third stop @ Lavagna. It’s becoming one of our favs just outside the Navy Yard! In addition to some of our regular pasta dishes, we had some tasty wines. We highly recommend!
Excellent evening. Food was fantastic, service was terrific. We were late and they were able to accommodate. One of our favorite restaurants.
We had a delicious brunch at Lavagna. I had the goat cheese omelette and potatoes. Our server was unfriendly and appeared annoyed to be there. There was also a mixup with our reservation--we called to change the time the night before and they confirmed but never changed it in their book. We ended up having to wait about 10 minutes, but again, the food was delicious.
The staff is knowledgeable about what is vegan on thier menu. We were able to have bread which they knew were vega. However pasta without cheese is kind of meh both for non-vegans and vegans. It's nice that the restaurant will leave the cheese off of their pastas but it would be incredible if they made non-dairy cheese like a cashew cheese.
Pleasantly surprised. Good food. Nice ambiance. Would go again when I'm in the area.
It's an amazing place to eat, a very dry menu, with lovely options! Try it!
It was a bit too noisy where we sat upstairs in the bar area. At first it was freezing but when I complained to our server Mario, he reported it & the cold air was immediately turned off which was great. Mario was great & so was the food!
Loved brunch at lavangas. We went for my friends 40th. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. They didn’t let our glasses get the least bit empty and even provided us with napkins when we had a sappy moment. The best part was the tiramisu and birthday song they provided my bestie! Thanks for making her birthday experience GREAT!!!
Dinner was fantastic as always, Brandon is a wonderful server who helped us pick great wines and gave us a great experience, staying late as we were the last table, to talk with us and wrap up our meal.
Phenomenal meal with the family. Satisfied foodies and finnicky folks alike. Great wines, great range of wine pricing. Ravioli was to die for.
Very noisy inside for Saturday brunch but very nice outside--we could hear each other and the food was excellent as was the service.
Mussels, spaghetti bolognese and duck breast we’re all amazing!
chicken and waffles was ok. salmon omelet was very good.
Went out with friends. Food was excellent, not crazy expensive and we could actually hear ourselves talk! We will go back!
Always enjoy coming here for brunch with our big group of friends. The staff is always very friendly and accommodating.
Connie saved a challenging service experience and made it a great night. .
Disappointed with service ( at least our waiter) and food wasn’t bad but not anything to write home about.
Love this restaurant so much, but my last experience was less than ideal. Made a reservation for 5 people. They sat us upstairs right under the televisions at a 4-top and had one of us sitting on the edge of the table with no option of moving tables. The service is normally fabulous but tonight it was pretty bad. Even the food was mediocre compared to previous visits. My guess is it was an ‘off’ night. I definitely recommend trying it out but I’d request a table downstairs or in the back of the upstairs. I will be taking a break from bringing out of town visitors here for a bit.
Great service and food!
Friday night dining. Exceptional. Thoroughly enjoy Lavagne. The duck and spaghetti bolognese were delicious. The salumi board a dream. Bravo!
This place was amazing! We had really great food, service and half price bottle of wine! I would highly recommend for some great Italian food!
The service was excellent, the food was good but our friend complained of heavy salt in his omelet. The noise at Brunch was off the charts. The 4 of us could hardly hear one another. The restaurant needs to invest in sound protection on the walls. With all the hardwood and brick, there is nothing to absorb the sound. ☹️
Locally sourced Italian, creative choices on the menu, pleasant, enthusiastic wait staff. Reasonably priced. Part of a Barracks Row restaurant scene that is finally giving DC eaters a destination that isn't NW.
Loved the homemade pasta and 1/2 price bottle of wine on sunday
Best brunch deal in DC!
