Lavagna - Washington DC
The beautiful, Genoan village of Lavagna has long been known for its abundant slate production, quarried in the Capenardo and S. Giacomo mountains nearby. Over the years, "Lavagna" became synonymous with "chalkboard".
The menu at Lavagna portrays our idea that food should be just like a chalkboard: simple, fresh, and innovated often.
Lavagna relies on a network of trusted local farmers for the ingredients that form the basis of our simple, contemporary Italian dishes. Our ever-changing menu reflects the best that the season has to offer.
Voted Best Italian in the 2015 AND 2016 AND 2017 Best of DC Washington City Paper Reader's Poll!
I was outside- service and food were terrific.
Only ever been here for weekend bottomless brunch. Consistently great food and service! Mimosas always refilled promptly and the menu items are very good. Only docking a star on value because they recently increased their prices by a few bucks on the bottomless. Now on par with cava or others at around $35pp
I had brunch here with some out of town friends. It was a fun place to get together and talk. The food and service were good, and it's in a great location.
Food was great and it was easy to get a seat. It was also pretty quiet for a DC restaurant.
Service was excellent. We ordered bottled water & half of a bottle left. The waiter capped the bottle & put in a carrying bag which was quite nice. Two of us had the barramundi which was very good. Two of us had the duck breast which was very tasty but not as tender as I’ve had.
We had a wonderful experience at Lavagna! Would definitely recommend it for small groups.
We had a nice post race brunch at Lavagna. Service was quick, which was great for us since we all needed to get home and nap!
Great food and value. Has always been easy to get a table. I'll be back
Another wonderful meal and lovely evening at Lavanga. Kudos to our server - Chandler. Steven, of course, always creates a warm, welcoming space.
Very good restaurant
The brunch was very good and reasonably priced. The service was excellent. The waiter kept our water glasses full, checked on us several times, and the food came out way faster than we expected. Would recommend to a friend.
Lavagna has the best brunch, pancakes were so good!
I have been wanting to try this place for awhile now and I was not disappointed. My mom and I went for an early brunch after church so it was still not that busy when we got there. I had the mascarpone pancakes and my mom had the arugula omelet and both were absolutely to die for. I will definitely be coming back for brunch and also to try out their lunch and dinner menus.
Great brunch! Excellent service! We really enjoyed it.
I had a great experience! I went for brunch and they were so accommodating and found us a seat on the patio. It was gorgeous out, the goat cheese omelette I ordered was great and came so quickly! Our server was very attentive and made sure our mimosa glasses were never empty. It was affordable and definitely would recommend for a casual brunch :)
We made reservations for my mom's birthday while she was in town. We were seated promptly and ordered the special appetizer (scallops and shrimp) before our main courses of the ravioli and two spaghetti bolognese. All were delicious! We will happily go back! The only small thing was when we were greeted they told my mom happy birthday and that she would get a yummy dessert - that never happened.
Terrific service, amazing authentic food. A little overpriced.
Attentive service and first class menu. This was a great evening.
The pasta is AMAZING. We loved the bread, too! Highly recommend.
We enjoyed this quaint place. We opted to sit outside on a wonderful Friday evening. Great waitstaff. Highly recommend!
Food was fantastic, server was kind and friendly, hostess was down right rude.
Lavagna was amazing-- fresh bread to start off the meal, great homemade pasta and exceptional service.
Great food and service. We could hear each other and were not pushed to leave.
Very enjoyable neighborhood Italian. Comfortable, casual environment. Hearty portions, well-prepared food. Friendly service. Excellent wine list. Tables were a bit close to each other, but nothing unusual for DC on a Saturday night. Perfectly cooked pasta and lamb. Everything the right consistency and temperature. I did think my dish needed a touch more salt or some spice (papardelle lamb), to bring out the flavors. I usually cook with very little salt and rarely add salt when dining out, but this time something was missing. And there was no salt on the table -- or any of the tables. I also felt an infused olive oil or more herbs in the table bread would have been nice. Unexpected star of the evening was the side dish of brussels sprouts with pork belly, cranberry and parmesan. Yummy!
We went on a Saturday night for dinner and received indifferent service and mediocre food. The food came out very quickly, but the lamb was raw inside- and had to be sent back- and the pasta undercooked. I wont go there again and wonder why people even recommend this restaurant given all the alternatives. And, truly I am unsure how the pasta can be farm to table.
A solid choice for in the neighborhood Italian. Cozy decor and good wait staff. Menu is straightforward and the food is quite good. Lots of kids and families when we went for an early supper on a Saturday evening. I approve. We will be back.
What a serendipitous find! We were looking for something in the Capitol Hill area and found this restaurant on OpenTable. The food was out of this world. We had spaghetti bolognese and the apple salad.
Everything was extremely salty. Service wasn’t great.
Group brunch on a Sunday; service and food were great! Appreciated that the whole table didn’t have to participate in the bottomless mimosas.
Very good pasta dishes and tiramisu!Lavagna cocktail is amazing if you like a delicious sweet cocktail! Not cheap but reasonable prices for portion sizes and quality of food. Great Italian restaurant. Not too loud which was also nice.
Consistently good food, wine and cocktails!
Pretty good food, great service, unbelievably cheap drinks (compared to other places)
Great food and great service. Never disappointed for brunch.
Great for brunch, very good food! Accommodate for allergies
Absolutely recommended. The food is fresh, the service is precise and overall it is a solid eatery to enjoy.
I don’t know what took an Italian food lover so long to visit Lavagna but we cannot wait to go back! The service and the food were flawless from start to finish. The focaccia was warm and flavorful - great for absorbing some of the generously portioned sauce on the pasta dishes. Highly recommend the lobster bisque and bruschetta to start, and finish off your meal with the tiramisu!
The staff and the restaurant itself were all warm and inviting as well! We loon forward to a return visit for brunch or another dinner!
I thought with a later reservation on a Sunday we would beat the boozy brunch crowd but that was not the case. I had left messages with management that we’d have a baby with us. We were seated upstairs with a very loud table across from us. While our server and management did their best, this wasn’t the most family friendly meal we could have had to celebrate.
Great food, great drinks, awesome staff. Will go again soon!
Really wanted to like this place. The food however was just OK. The wine list too expensive for a place with not high-quality food. Disappointed. Won’t be back.
Love this place. Great food and service! I will be back.
