Lavagna - Washington DC
The beautiful, Genoan village of Lavagna has long been known for its abundant slate production, quarried in the Capenardo and S. Giacomo mountains nearby. Over the years, "Lavagna" became synonymous with "chalkboard".
The menu at Lavagna portrays our idea that food should be just like a chalkboard: simple, fresh, and innovated often.
Lavagna relies on a network of trusted local farmers for the ingredients that form the basis of our simple, contemporary Italian dishes. Our ever-changing menu reflects the best that the season has to offer.

It was hard to get the servers attention- was almost an hour from sitting down until our order was taken. Meanwhile a table that came in after us had their food before the server even took our order for drinks!
Great food and service, but a little loud for a Sunday brunch upstairs.
Loved it! Excellent dinner!
Good food, good service. Good mimosas. Good pancakes and omelets. Relaxed ambiance.
Lavagna was awesome! We had a large party and they were super accommodating throughout the process of making the reservation and solidifying the number of people. Our waitress was lovely and attentive; she dealt with a complicated bill-splitting situation like a pro.
Seriously great service delivered in an incredibly loud space and for relatively bland food and warm mimosas. It’ll stay on the list and I’ll give it one more try. But, first impressions weren’t great.
Everything was wonderful! Cute little place and nice atmosphere! The service was impeccable and the food was not only good but huge portions!
As always, fantastic meal, some of the best italian in DC.
We had a nice dinner and wine. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive. Maybe a bit too attentive, but very good. It was a little loud from the drunk 30th birthday party near us on the 2nd floor. The staff apologized, which we appreciated.
The Spaghetti Bolagnese is outstanding!
This is a sweet neighborhood gem- fresh, homemade pastas; friendly, knowledgeable staff; great for kids and a nice second story bar! Will definitely return.
Good food, good atmosphere, and good service.
absolutely delicious! highly recommend the ravioli!
We would definitely be back. The lamb peparadelle was outstanding.
Delicious fresh pasta! The wait staff seemed to be in a rush but it was still a great experience. Lovely interior.
Poor service, poor food. Much better options available within sight. Won't go again.
Everything was wonderful. Great service and we sat outside on an unusually cool night in June. Great food and half-priced wine.
Both the food and service was outstanding. Our waitress Asia was terrific. Everyone had pasta and it was great.
Perfect place to dine before Marine Band show at Marine Barracks at 8th and I SE.
5 out of 5. Hands down the best pasta I’ve had in DC. This restaurant deserves to be on anyone’s list of places to eat.
Food was wonderful. Service was great . The bartender and wait staff were terrific.
Friend and I shared an appetizer salad, meat/cheese tray, slice of cheesecake. Each had one cocktail and one glass of wine. Total came to $100. Salad was standard (nothing unusual), but we really enjoyed the meat/cheese tray. The cheesecake was decent, though small for the price. Nice to sit outside, but a little pricey for the size of the salad and cheesecake.
A must for Italian food in DC!
We were there for Sunday Brunch. We ordered the pancakes with Nutella, biscuits and gravy made with Italian sausage and eggs Florentine., all were delicious. Chandler our server was great he was on top of the bottomless mimosas and our glasses were never left empty. Great place to go with friends relaxed atmosphere and has outdoor seating for those who like to eat alfresco..
Food was all excellent -- Eggs Florentine, Arugula Omelet, Marscapone Pancakes... Staff very friendly and helpful. Someone seems to have labelled this restaurant as not kid-friendly. Wrong! A high chair was already set up when we arrived. Other patrons and staff were all welcoming.
Food was okay. Three of us each had three different dishes and found none to be particularly good or worth returning for.
Great service though!
We were seated immediately for brunch with a reservation. Both indoor and outdoor seating were convenient; we sat indoors. The brunch crowd is lively (loud) but we planned to catch up so our conversation fit right into the chattering hum. Our server (Mario) was attentive. He took our order and nearly 8 minutes later our food was in front of us – as in, barely exchanged pleasantries. Hey – I was hungry so no complaints. I dived into my crab risotto - (you should be thinking “how is risotto done in 8 minutes?”). But when you’re hungry everything doesn’t have to make sense if it taste good. And the crab risotto has such a well-balanced mix of crab, risotto, cream, old bay, mushrooms,.. I could go on but I cleaned my plate. Who cares about my fairy godmother’s spaghetti carbonara? Ok she enjoyed it (the pasta was homemade) but back to the risotto, no it was not textbook risotto but it was rice transformed into a pasta-like bite. (and no not soggy rice) Ok I’ll move on, the homemade focaccia toast was great because the homemade raspberry puree was delicious. (as in I asked for more) I’d go back for dinner.. (I love Italian food – this did not disappoint)
Mario was fantastic and so were the pancakes!
We did not know what to expect coming from New York where we go to many excellent Italian restaurants. Other than some difficulty with the selection of an appropriate table location the service was excellent and the food superb. We will definitely come back again when we are in town. Highly recommended.
The food was delicious and table service was great! Lavagna is my neighborhood favorite. I'm just wondering why the host initially indicated that there was no availability when we tried a walk-in seating request. That was odd, but I'm glad we were able to enjoy the great food and table service after all.
Had an early dinner with my wife and son. We had reservations and arrived on time. Restaurant was not very busy yet aside from the bar. My only issue was we ordered our meal including salads and entree. All arrived at the same time only minutes after we ordered including the bread. When I mentioned to the waitress that I would prefer to eat my salad first before the entree was served. She seemed perplexed and was unsure the kitchen could keep it warm. Overall the food was fresh and good. Just felt very rushed.
The food was excellent. The staff understands the wine list and menu to make perfect pairings.
Brunch is awesome.
First time back after a long hiatus. Took friends and we all loved the food, wine selection, and service. It won't be so long before I return.
Went there for brunch and my omelette was very poor. Just an egg casing around a lump of tepid cheese and couple of whole spinach leaves and cherry tomatoes - none of which were even warm. And egg was so rubbery. Italian sausage egg was also very tepid and over creamy. Generally everything was large quantities of average quality.
$13 bottomless mimosas! You definitely cannot beat that deal! My friend and I were seated outside and really enjoyed the attentive service.
This was my second time for brunch at Lavagna, and both experiences have been fantastic. During my first trip, I had the smoked salmon omelet (delicious). On this trip, I had the Eggs Florentine on focaccia, which was good but not great. Although the eggs were perfectly poached, the sauce that came with it tasted like jarred alfredo sauce to me.
I would highly recommend their brunch, and I have only heard great things about their lunch and dinner menus.
Food was decent, service was just ok. Couldn’t keep orders straight. Had to ask for silverware. Trouble getting attention of server.
Excellent fresh pasta and flexible options for vegetarians upon request. A little disappointed in the bruschetta - more like toast points.
Great food, great service & beautiful location!
A consistently great value, handmade pastas, reasonably priced Italian wine selection, and inventive appetizers set Lavagne apart. Highly recommend!
Great staff and delicious meals!
