L'Auberge Chez Francois Ratings and Reviews
We recently visited L'Auberge Chez Francois for our anniversary dinner. We had never been there before, but had heard good things about it and understood that it would be pricey. We thought the food was good, the service was just ok, the noise levels were high, and the value was questionable.
We ordered the Prix-Fixe offerings - the menu does not present a la carte as an option.
My dinner companion is the most awesome woman in the world!
All of the food we ordered was very good. My wife ordered Onion Soup, Shrimp/Spinach Salad, Duck Breast, and a Grand Marier Soufflé. I ordered Bay Scallops/Mushroom appetizer, house salad, Beef Tenderloins, and the Grand Marnier Soufflé. We were offered many extras - a sampling of lentil soup, sorbet, a special Anniversary dessert and a sample of cookies and chocolates.
Even though the food was great, it was no more notable than many other good French restaurants we have visited.
We were seated for at least 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. We were not provided menus and were left to wait for someone to visit our table. Then we were given water and it was probably another 5 minutes before we were given menus and asked if we would like to order any drinks. The process felt very pro forma - they went through the routine and at the end we paid the money.
Charging extra for the spinach salad when you are already paying $80+ per person seemed unnecessary.
While we are all about not being rushed, it was 1 1/2 hours into our evening before the salad course was complete and we were awaiting our meals.
There is just way too much food. While everything was tasty, it was a ridiculous barrage of food. We were both nearly full before our entrées arrived. We only ate half our meals to save some room to at least taste the soufflés.
So... Two people for dinner. Good food, but no a la carte offering. OK, not great service. $320 with tip. Just too much money for what you get.
We have patronized L'Auberge Chez Francois over 20 years and have never been disappointed, the food is superb, the ambiance wonderful and the service is always top notch. It is by far our favorite restaurant even though we have to drive 50 minutes to get there.
Chez François has been my parents’ favorite since they opened. Took Mom for her birthday. Tommy treated her like a queen! We had lunch. We had the pate appetizer and the crepes with duxelles. Superb! Their pates are the best. We were served split pea soup with our breads. So nice on a cool day. Mom was full, I had the Lemon Sole special - terrific. We had ordered Mom’s favorite , Gran Marnier soufflé. They surprised Mom with another dessert. Needless to say, we devoured both! I love the ambience, food and service here.
This was our first experience at L'Auberge Chez Francois and it didn't disappoint. The atmosphere is quaint but comfortable. While this is a dinner jacket establishment, it is not a stuffy formal atmosphere. The portions are sizable and we were very pleased with the course selections. Service was at times slow, but not overly so. Food was delicious! This is a lovely choice for a special event / date night.
This is the best meal I have ever had. We did not feel rushed, wait staff was wonderful, host and hostess were great and plenty of food was served. Our waiter, recommended items which were excellent and we had a wonderful experience. Will definitely go to this restaurant for special occasions.
We had a wonderful lunch on the patio. Service was impeccable - no rushing or hovering, and yet instantly available if we needed something. The 3-course $44 prix fixe luncheon menu offered many choices of appetizer, entree and dessert - tough choices! The food was magnificent. Given that everything from beginning to end was done perfectly, I felt it was an excellent value.
Very glad to have gone for a special occasion. Attractive place. Might want to try it during daylight hours. The server was terrific; helpful, humors, nonjudgmental, patient. Fabulous wine list with multiple price points. However, the food itself was just average. With its' stellar reputation we were expecting the food to be divine. I'm sorry to report that we've had much better French food for less $ in Alexandria & Fairfax City.
The food, service and ambiance at L'Auberge is always very special - it is just a great restaurant. Now that we are retired we tend to come to L'Auberge for lunch. This was one of our first visits for dinner in some time. And I must say that the quantity of food they provide you for dinner is a bit much. I much prefer the same high quality food they provide in smaller portions for lunch. Maybe L'Auberge could consider offering a smaller three course option for dinner at a somewhat reduced price.
I was hoping for a more French cuisine experience. The sauces were pretty bland.....they just didn't pop the way they should have. I would recommend the beef or lamb, because the lobster was not great at all. For what you get, this place is way over priced. Maybe the chef was having a bad night!
Beautiful location and kind service, but the food disappointed. We tried 8 dishes as a table. The “signature” beef cheeks tasted like a basic beef stew. The lobster salad was dramatically over-dressed and soggy, and the vanilla in the dressing was overpowering. The tenderloin was well-cooked, but the hollandaise with it was too thick. The bread and cottage cheese were delicious, but that’s not enough to justify the trip. We ate at Le Diplomate the night before, and my mother commented, “L’auberge is such a charming place, and so much quieter! But I think everything we ate at Le Diplomate was tastier.” I honestly agree, and that wasn’t my expectation.
L’ Auberge never disappoints! The setting is so quaint & charming. The service is consistently excellent. The food is delicious. I always get my favorite lobster w/ crab and passion fruit ($85-including appetizers, green salad, dessert and the 3 surprise extra “tastes” that come out)and my husband loves the Dover sole. The bouillabaisse appetizer had a nice amount of seafood for a “tasting” menu w/ no up charge. Desserts are wonderful—not many places you can get a soufflé any more! So worth the trip to the country!
