L'ATELIER - Boulder Ratings and Reviews
This has been a long time favorite restaurant of ours for many years but this was the first special occasion fixed menu we have ever attended . The food was wonderful but with an absolutely packed restaurant the atmosphere was a bit loud and hurried. We had to wait a long time between courses and beverages were often forgotten. And were surprised by the mandatory 20% tip on the bill for just two people, which was not pre-disclosed.
We will continue to enjoy this restaurant because the food is special but be aware of special circumstances and stick to non-special occasions.
We dined here for the first time for our anniversary. I noted this in our reservation and we were delighted it was acknowledged! Love the art inspired atmosphere. Their model has a variety of servers helping the diners. The menu was fantastic and creative. We shared the lobster ravioli appetiser and they were fantastic. The ravioli was very tender, and the lobster was delicious. The lamb portion could have been a little larger, and thicker cut. The TV dinner was fun and creative, and the lobster could have been a little larger. So, this last point I would have rather stated via email to the restaurant, however no email was listed on the web site. When our server poured our taste of wine from a very nice bottle of Pinot, he poured a substantial pour into our water glass, filled with water! We yelled “stop”, but he barely apologised! The RIGHT thing to do would have been to offer an additional glass of wine to replace the serving lost in the water. Nothing was offered. This was a weird situation that could have been made right, but think he was more interested in whisking the erred glass away! That said, we loved our experience, and will return!
Had we known that the Boulder location of this restaurant was closing on Friday February 16, we would have made reservations elsewhere for my birthday on February 10. Having dined at L'Atelier on numerous occasions including many birthdays we were expecting the excellent experiences we have had here. Tonight was very poor - mediocre at best and that is being kind. We ordered a bottle of wine, which was placed in a wine bucket across the aisle from our booth. We had to pour our own wine twice, getting up to get the bottle. Not one staff member noticed, including our server. Our server was hardly present. The menu entree offerings were limited. Having had lamb chops here previously I expected the same quality. I was shocked. Two meager rack bones with about a silver dollars worth of meat on them, swimming and drenched an what was one of the worst sauces I've ever had. And to top off this dish, it was gamey and extremely fatty (at least half of each chop.) I will not be taking any of my time to drive to their new location in Denver. Maybe we should have since the chef, high quality of food and presentation and professional staff obviously were down there.
I love celebrating my birthday at l’Atelier! We were in mourning when it was announced they were closing, but they’re still here and from the size of the Saturday night crowd, going strong. I honestly think the food was the best we’ve ever had. Special thanks to Alexandrea for speaking with us and making us feel special. The entire staff was spot on! What a gem we have here in Boulder!!
I really wanted to give a positive review for my experience at L’ATELIER but could not because of various problems.
A couple problems with my night there included:
- getting seated took over 30 minutes even with a reservation. It was New Year’s Eve so that may have been a one off as it was busy.
- ambience and decor looked dated
- the lamb chops entree was lukewarm at best although it was cooked well.
On positive notes, the rest of the meal was great. Staff was very gracious and friendly. I may give this place a chance again.
Restaurant called about an hour before our New Years Eve reservation and said they were running a little behind, 20 to 30 minutes. Although they tried to make things right with a glass of bubbly, once seated it seemed like they were backed up in the kitchen and the food showed it.
An above average restaurant for certain. However, it was 10 degrees outside while we dined yet somehow the interior of the restaurant was cold and uncomfortable. Everyone at the table complained about it and some wore jackets. Food was really good, service was great. The escargot, "TV" dinner, bouillabaisse, and salmon salad were all a hit. Seemed a bit pricey but we did celebrate with food: champaign, desert and other drinks.
We used to love L'atelier and would go on special occasions. We found the food uninspired with moderately good enough flavor. Not worth the price. We won't go back again. There were black lentils on all four of our plates. Really. They cook a big pot of black lentils and serve them to all the diners. I'm surprised it gets all the good reviews that it does. It seems lackluster and the owner must not care any more. Thank God the charming and fun fish lighting is still there. Loved those. The fun little figurines in the glass cases that made it a charming spot, gone, sad. Service was good enough. I notified them ahead of time that a couple of us were gluten intolerant. They tossed a basket of so so gluten free crackers on the table. Now I can get those very same crackers at the grocery store and they're not that good. There are so many splendid gluten free bread options in Boulder but a basket of crackers carelessly tossed on the table and even with the heads up we had to remind them a couple of us were gluten intolerant. Someone's not paying attention to their customers.
Everything was wonderful. We went for a family dinner (4 people) on Christmas Eve as we were in town for our son’s graduation and couldn’t be home to celebrate.
The wine list was extensive and the sommelier was very helpful in finding us a really nice wine.
The food was delicious! We had lamb chops, salmon and filet. All the sides were so good and the lentils were delicious. They were served with the salmon, the sides with the filet and lamb chops were also really good. We sampled 2 desserts - the creme brûlée was my favorite.
We all enjoyed every part of our evening. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. We will definitely be back next time we are in town.
Always lives up to our expectations. We each thought our entrees were delicious and perfectly prepared. No one wanted to share a bite, so we didn't. lol They were that good - lobster ravioli, lamb (popsicles) and the filet. Always love the house salad. Nice to find a good French place in Boulder. The decor doesn't jump out at you to make it feel like you just landed in Paris but that's ok. We were from out of town and made the reservation about a week in advance. I will plan on returning the next time we pass through the area.
Food was very good, server was nice but obviously new to the job and therefore at times painfully slow. The other servers seemed to be on the ball and would step in to help but our guy was clearly new, inexperienced and a little distracted. I was surprised the manager who seemed to whiz by from time to time didn’t check in with us.
In any event the food was great and the ambience very nice so we could enjoy our conversation
L’Ateleir is the place to go if you’re looking for good food, a leisurely dinner, and a relatively quiet environment. My friends and I each ordered a different entry, and none of us left a morsel on our plates. The service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. One note of warning: the desserts are delightful but quite large. Plan to share.
We've been dining at L'Atelier for many years, so were interested in seeing how it's been reinvented. The restaurant was quite full on a Friday evening, yet we were seated promptly and our waiter introduced himself shortly thereafter. My first course -- Maine mussels and clams -- had a delicious broth that would have been a hit if presented as a soup course. Mussels were enormous and sweet. Beef tenderloin was succulent and cooked to perfection. My wife thought her "Lobster TV dinner" was highly inventive but a bit lacking in flavor. Having read about service problems in prior reviews I had modest expectations, but the service was off-scale outstanding (maybe they read the reviews and made corrections?) In any case, a memorable evening.
We enjoyed an Antinori wine dinner at L'Atelier. We've been going to the Antinori wine dinner for several years. It has always been excellent. The wines were wonderful. But it is the food that we keep coming back for. This year, the menu started with three oysters which had a tasty sauce on top. The next course was a duck rillette which was very flavorful. The main was lamb. A staple of wine dinners and it was prepared perfectly. The best of the lot was dessert. It looked like a scoop of ice cream. But was a delicious cheesecake. Service was impeccable. We look forward to the next wine dinner or my birthday so that we can enjoy this wonderful restaurant again.
We made reservations for a table for Thanksgiving. We were quite happy with the menu for that occasion, as it was varied. There was also a vegetarian option. We had to wait about one half hour for the table that was reserved.
We ordered a number of different entrees. It took a long time for them to bring bread to the table - had to ask for it. When the entrees came, one was missing. Then the server said there were no scallops left as all the entrees were being served to the other diners. The server asked the person who had ordered scallops what she wanted.
We were very shocked that it wasn't until everyone was being served that the server said one of the entrees wasn't available. He did give her a salad while her entrée was being prepared, but she wasn't able to eat her entrée with us. The restaurant did comp her entree.
We thought the food was very well prepared and everyone enjoyed their food. This was the first time we went there and would definitely go again.
