About LaSalette Restaurant
At home amidst the historic buildings surrounding Sonoma's historic plaza, LaSalette Restaurant has earned its reputations as one of the Sonoma Valley's favorite restaurants since its inception in 1998. Chef Manuel Azevedo's signature Cozinha Nova Portuguesa- "New Portuguese Cuisine" -celebrates the varied and complex flavors of his native Portuguese homeland while adapting them to the immense offerings of top-quality ingredients from his current home in California. The result is a unique cuisine characterized by familiar Sourthern European comfort ingredients, exotic seasonings picked from around the glove during hundreds of years of Portuguese expeditionary voyages, and fresh local and seasonal Californian produce. As the success of LaSalette attests, it's a winning combination for lovers of traditonal Portuguese fare and adventurous gourmets alike.

LaSalette Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We came across this restaurant while visiting Sonoma. We wanted a Latin fare restaurant and this was recommended to us. This is a wonderful Portuguese restaurant. I have NEVER had a beet appetizer served the way the did. Amazing. For my main course I had the sea bass. The best I have EVER had. Thick, cooked just right and with a flavor that was unbelievable. My husband had the fish stew we he raved about. Hard to get a reservation so be sure to reserve in advance!!!
We went on a Thursday evening so it wasn't too crowded. Thoroughly enjoyed the vegetarian entree and the seafood stew. Exceptional hot bread and dessert menus. Unobtrusive and efficient service. Good value and enjoyable dining experience. We will definitely return.
La Salette was such a great experience, even more than the great reviews we read prior to our arrival. We are going to vacation in Portugal soon and were curious about the cuisine. Every selection at La Salette was beautifully presented, incredibly fresh and delicious. The seafood was comparable to the great selections we appreciate in the Bay Area, but with a twist. My sea bass was delicious, presented on a bed of collards and corn. The salt cod is imported daily and the process from receipt to table was interestingly explained. A cultural experience to say the least. Our server was knowledgable and attentive, translating the dishes in Portuguese. Truly a memorable Valentines evening experience. There is a wonderful patio for lunch or summer evenings. Heaters are ready to turn on for cooler nights. We ate indoors which was cozy and conducive for quiet conversations, yet a lively atmosphere overall. Make reservations to assure a table, however, on sunny days, take a chance for more tables. A true gem of a restaurant. The restaurant courtyard entry is located on the Sonoma Square. Locate the famous Ledson Theatre on the square (east side of the square and travel down the courtyard to the left of the theatre.
We returned to La Salette after several years absence and wished we had been back sooner. Our Valentine's Day lunch date was completed by the inventive, unusual Portuguese themed menu items with characteristic pairing of fish/shellfish and chorizo in the "Fishermans Stew"(came with mussels, clams, mountainous tiger prawns, chorizo and tasty brothy in a serious bowl.
The pork shoulder with clams was also delicious. Be sure to ask for double helpings of their bread- you will need it to mop up.
The wine-list has Californian and Portuguess choices, she had the Wellington barrel-aged chardonnay, and he had the reserve vinho verde. Both by the glass at less than $10 on Sonoma Plaza. Entrees around $25 for lunch.
A chocolate mousse to share and we were purring. The situation has always been the one slight let down, but accept that it is not a scenic go-to and enjoy the food and service!
All dishes well prepared, presented and excellent service. Limited but serviceable wine list at good prices. Have dined here several times, dependable, unique menu with several house mainstays (Portugese fish dishes, stew). Recommend for something different and tasty, pleasant setting and service.
The four of us very much enjoyed our lunch at La Salette. We have been trying the restaurants in Sonoma since moving here a year and a half ago. La Salette is, in my view, the best so far in terms of the taste of the food itself and certainly the presentation of the food. I am not one to take pictures of plates, but in this case I did. It is a lovely little restaurant , and the wait staff were very friendly, made one or two minor mistakes, but these didn't matter. Friendliness is the key. One of us has traveled extensively to Brazil so made valuable suggestions on the menu choices as this is an authentic Portuguese/Brazilian restaurant. The chocolate mousse dessert was just a beautiful creation. It was a little on the expensive side for Sonoma, but not for San Francisco or other main cities. I'm mainly a New Yorker and this is right in line with their pricing, much better (at this price) in terms of food and presentation for the most part. There must be an artistic person in this kitchen! How a meal looks is so important, I think.
This was our second visit to La Salette and it won’t be our last! This time we ordered four small plates which were delicious and showed off the kitchen’s talents! Loved the three ounce pours of wine. Next time I will have more room for the beautiful entrees! Definitely worth a visit. It is a unique restaurant on Sonoma square!
Lovely food in a lovely atmosphere. Not the same old same old menu items.
If you love unbland Mediterranean flavored seafood seasoned perfectly in the Portuguese tradition....this is the place to go. A medium sized menu...but everything on it is
delicious and wonderfully executed. Service is also impeccable.
The experience was phenomenal. The food was very well presented and delicious. The service was great. We had lunch and then went for a walk and returned for dessert and coffee. The traditional dessert made my husband really nostalgic. Will definitely be back
I have eaten at La Salette in the past and loved it. However, since I am eating less meat these days, I did not truly enjoy the one vegetarian choice or my salad.
The salad was nothing special and my mushroom entree besides the broth which was tasty, was not enjoyable.
I love the atmosphere and the service was impeccable.
I may give it another chance and try some appetizers.
We had heard about this restaurant from a local. Walking by we stopped to read the menu, and ended up making a reservation.
The restaurant is tiny and it was too chilly to eat outside, so reservations were a must.
Exciting choices of not local dishes. If you want a change from “California style cooking” by all means this place is for you. Portoghese inspired dishes with local fresh ingredients.
Intimate restaurant with Portuguese food, tucked away on a pedestrian walkway just off the main square in Sonoma. Delicious beet salad, delectable (though petite portion) of sea bass. Deserts were exceptional and came in a trio. I highly recommend the rice pudding. Many seafood options and not the usual fare as in every other restaurant. Good for foodies-not so good for picky or pedestrian palates.
We arrived an hour early, they seated us at the bar where we requested. I had the Fisherman Stew-it was filled with clams, mussels, white fish, 2 prawns, scallops, linguica and potatoes all in a spicy broth with a hint cilantro. It was served piping hot and filled me up. I would order this dish again. The service was 5 star. I enjoy sitting at the bar watching the chefs prepare our food which is all cooked in a wood fired oven!!!
We were not familiar with Portuguese food, and so glad we tried it. The traditional cod casserole was outstanding, the service was excellent and our server graciously answered all of our questions about ingredients, style of cooking. We had heard that the desserts were fabulous and we concur! The tawny port was the best we've ever had.
This was my first visit to LaSalette when the food was not outstanding. Started with the apple salad which showed usual excellence but the scallops were a disappointment. The serving of octopus was tiny in comparison to previous portions and was a little rubbery (overcooked). Finally the pork was good but not great.
I'm hopeful that the kitchen just had a bad day because I have very good memories of this place.
If you like whole fish, the branzino was fantastic! Love the wood oven taste. The sea bass was sublime, simple and tasty. Every dish we had here was outstanding, fresh and thoughtfully plated. Only to be topped by the service...with attention to small details. Would go often if we lived in the area.
I can't recommend La Salette enough - I've been there several times now and it never disappoints - great service, ambiance, and terrific Portuguese inspired cuisine with amazing sauces. Priced similarly to other restaurants on Sonoma Plaza, but it delivers a superior experience from beginning (best dinner rolls in the world) to end (great new choices on the dessert menu, and a great Port selection).
Elegant and delicious. I really enjoyed the rice dish—I think it was Arroz Valenciana or something like that. It was similar to paella and they were quite generous with the meat and shellfish. I could have eaten more rice, though.
I liked that they had warm bread—so much better than cold bread, and these rolls were yummy.
So often, a beet salad is a bunch of greens or lettuce with a few slices of beets. Their beet root salad was all beets with just a hint of some kind of green. The goat cheese in the beet salad was delicious.
While it was a bit expensive, my friend and I got a decent amount of food and drink for the price. So overall, I’d recommend it. I look forward to going back.
