For cozy, classic French, it doesn't get much better than L'Ardoise in the Castro.
Fabulous little restaurant. Easy to find and in a cute neighborhood. Food was exceptional and the wine list was very good. Wait staff was attentive without being pushy or stuffy. Elegantly casual!
Consistently charming and delicious. My go to French Bistro.
Great food. Great place. Very warm and attentive team.
Our favorite for a Saturday night date. We feel transported to Paris each time we come here!
loved the food and service.
I'd been to Lardoise many times, being a few blocks down the street. My friend, whom I treated for his birthday, had never been. This is a guy who grew up in SF and had been part of the city night life for many years. He was mmmmm-ing and ahhhh-ing throughout dinner. The butter lettuce salad was generous, fresh, and dressed just so. We each ordered the filet mignon: tender, flavorful and cooked like someone knew what they were doing. The desserts, of course, followed. Perfect ending with coffee. My 85-year-old man-bout-town friend said it was the tenderest filet mignon he'd ever had.
A couple of times a year the last ten years or so ( or whenever it was that they opened) I've never had a bad meal or inattentive service.
Family dinner for 4 and our 2nd time here.
Duck Confit - crispy exterior but fatty/juicy inside, a classic
Filet Mignon - hint of truffle oil, delicious
Hangar Steak - flavorful and good value
Halibut - very good
Overall food quality and preparation is excellent.
Excellent dinner with great service!!! Definitely a restaurant we will recommend to others
Went here for a birthday dinner. Restaurant was very clean and had a good atmosphere. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, they even text to confirm my booking and brought out a cake with a candle. The food was delicious, good portions and not overly priced. Good variety of drinks and a good menu with different options, as well as the specials of the day which the waiters tell you about. 5*
Fabulous find!! We love this place!! - A great meal in a nice neighborhood location. Cozy, friendly atmosphere - amazing food with generous portions. We loved the filet mignon, the hangar steak and salmon - everything was beautiful and cooked perfectly! The tiger prawn ravioles were amazing. The apple tarte tatin was a comfort dessert large enough to share. We left happy and are looking forward to coming back!!
Fantastic food & service. I would highly recommend to anyone for an intimate dinner.
The food was fantastic and the ambiance romantic and so so french! From the moment you walk in, you might as well be in Paris!
Could not have been happier with our meal. All the usual suspects at this lovely French bistro with an original twist on appetizers and desserts. Good wine list. Friendly employees.
Excellent service; excellent food; wonderful experience as always.
Excellent French cuisine and fairly priced.
Love the decor and the ambiance.
Near home, nice walk!
As usual, excellent all around meal, service, and ambiance. On se reverra a bientot!
We were told this is an amazing restaurant and we were not disappointed.
One of my favorite restaurants in the city. Slightly under the radar, which is perfect for me!
Quite disappointed in the meal. I made a mistake with “medium rare” steak. Should’ve ordered medium. It was purple-red. The duck confit my husband had was not very good, he said. Charcuterie plate was just ok.
It was very cold, as the door kept getting stuck open. Brrr...
excellent food, great service, great wine recommendation
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city - and better than many I have been to in Paris! The food is authentic and delicious, and the people who run the restaurant are friendly.
Si vous souhaitez rompre avec la cuisine américaine, l’ardoise saura vous contenter avec un délicieux confit de canard, une belle tarte Tatin sans oublier les ravioles aux crevettes.
L’accueil est très sympathique et chaleureux.
Good for couple and unusual SF vibe
I had a lovely experience dining at L'ardoise. It was a rainy night and the restaurant was very cozy and warm. We had a reservation, but the previous table hadn't left yet; however, the staff made sure we were attended to while we were waiting and sat us as soon as the previous table left. The food was classic French comfort food. Entrées were rich and filling, and the sauces were spot on (short rib special and the duck confit). The creme brûlée was the perfect consistency---not too thick, but perfectly set. Great date night spot or for intimate dinners.
Fantastic food in a cozy pleasant environment
Great dining experience. Best foie gras we've ever had.
It was great as always.
L'Ardoise is a terrific dining experience. Excellent food, outstanding and friendly service. I took some friends for a boys night out and they all raved about the experience. Highly recommend for foodies and for an intimate and romantic, if a bit noisy, dinner.
The best restaurant experience I’ve had in ten years. I can’t say enough about how great everything was. I had the Filet and potatoes. Each was perfect. Absolutely perfect. The potatoes are cooked in duck fat as God intended. The flavor and the crispy crunch took me back to my Grandmothers cooking. It actually brought a tear to my eye as I never thought I would experience that again. The steak was cooked perfectly and with great flavor. My dates chicken was the best she ever had. She normally doesn’t like the skin and gives it to me. But not one bite of the crispy skin found its way to my plate.
We finished with two fantastic desserts. A perfect crem brûlée and an amazing Meringue.
Stepping through the velvet curtains transports one to such boite in France, the furnishings simple, the look & feel tres French. Wonderful menu, so many delicious choices, and such great wines to pair. The welcome is warm, the staff warm & helpful, and the kitchen is superb. Always a delightful time!
As usual, this prize in our district is our favorite for "steping out" and celebrating an occasion or just a very nice time in our busy lives. It reminds us of several small bistro' that we always visit when in the City of Light, Paris. This last visit to L'Ardoise we did start to plan a European jaunt.
Have always wanted to go to this restaurant and it did not disappoint
When you walk into the restaurant you feel like you have stepped into a Bistro in the heart of Paris. Wonderful food and service.
Simply the best! Excellent food, service, and ambience!
Fantastic food, expert waiter assistance, great value. Would definitely recommend.
Everything except the service was wonderful. Last time we ate there, the service was perfect and intuitive (never a conversation interrupted, always there when needed). This time, the person taking our order seemed impatient and was not helpful with, for example, wine choices. I felt like I had to hurry and make my ordering decisions and that didn't feel good at all.
This small, lovely restaurant is a neighborhood gem with many loyal customers. We made early reservations and were seated immediately. We chose a table nestled near the window. My husband and I shared the butter lettuce salad with smoked olive oil vinaigrette and marinated white anchovies. For entrees, he chose the Black Cod with Risotto and I, the Day Boat Scallops. Both were delicious. We shared Creme Brulee for desert. All dishes were wonderfully prepared and very fresh. Our waiter was attentive, yet afforded us private time to converse. What a great find very close to where we were staying on a visit to San Francisco.
We have been coming here since it opened. The welcome is always genuine, food spectacular and service friendly without being fawning. There are also interesting dinner guests so one does not mind the intimacy of the tables. It actually works!!
The best French Restaurant in San Francisco. Hands down!
Food was excellent. Service was great and the restaurant is a cozy place on the corner of a clean and cute neighborhood. I am definitely coming back to eat here. It was a great experience.
