L'Ardoise Ratings and Reviews
L’Ardoise is one of our favorite places in the city. We love to come here for the cozy French style decor, impeccable service and delicious food. The food and wine list is reasonably priced. We’ve never had a bad time or dinner here! Definitely a neighborhood gem that’s always booked up.
Five star food, two star service.
Came here for Valentines Day and enjoyed a delicious 4-course meal after hearing great things. We were greeted warmly upon arrival. Unfortunately our server disappeared after our main courses and some ground pepper were brought to the table. In stark contrast to the neighboring tables, our wine glasses sat empty after the first glass, and were taken away without offering another for the rest of our time there. They also delivered the check without asking/checking to see if we wanted an after dinner drink or tea/coffee. We essentially ordered our food, and that was the end of any sort of personal interaction with wait staff. Very delicious food, but the service was nearly absent with the exception of prompt food running and water refills. The Valentine’s Day rose they gave us as we left was a nice gesture though!
An unapologetically classic French restaurant, full of flavor, full of butter, rich and delicious. More like a French country restaurant in France, all the delicious food without the pretense and unctuousness that often accompanies really good French food in the US. A modest wine list, modestly priced, with plenty of good choices. We came a long way for this (80 miles) and it was absolutely worth it! We'll be back!
Charcuterie selection was excellent. Brussels sprouts were prepared perfectly and were refreshing palate cleanser. We both had steak (one the special and the other off the menu), which was perfectly seasoned, and cooked to the perfect temperature. The one area to improve on are the desserts. The Ile flottante and the Valrhona cake were OK. Wince list continues to be well-rounded with some great values. Last but most important, our server was attentive, pleasant and did NOT rush us as is so customary. Thank you for a memorable dinner!
We have been coming here for birthdays, anniversaries, promotions, etc for many years and it is our favorite restaurant in San Francisco. The food is always great as well as the awesome wines available and kir royal to start. Highly recommended for authentic French cuisine and ambiance.
Restaurant vibe was very casual and unpretentiousness. This was a very good find in San Francisco, located in mostly residential area, with street parking. Inside, feels cozy, warm and intimate. The food was simple and comforting. Started the evening with tiger prawn ravioles with a touch of finesse. The duck confit was moist and flavorful. My husband had the mushroom risotto with a good punch of earthiness. My daughter ordered the wagyu flat iron steak which was tender and cooked just right. My other daughter had the Parmesan risotto with Mahi-Mahi, moist and paired well with the grains. Offered good wine list that pairs well with the dishes on the menu. We ended the meal with their creme brûlée (silky & creamy texture) and the vahlrona chocolate fondant (delicate). Altogether, a delightful evening with very attentive servers.
I dine at L'Ardoise as often as is feasible. The owners are wonderful, the servers professional and helpful, the menu superb as is the wine list. Above all this may be the environment. Having lived in Paris for a time and dined at many wonderful Paris bistros, this transports me back to that wonderful time in my life. Also, it is quiet enough for a conversation without getting a sore throat from shouting and ringing in my ears when I leave. The desserts are the least wonderful selection so I almost always order the creme brulee which is always worth it.
We thoroughly enjoyed L'Ardoise! I took a friend there for a birthday dinner, and once we figured out how to get inside (their entryway is on the corner of the building, but it's curtained off on the inside, making it look more like a little coat room...kind of fun trying to figure it out though!), we thought we'd walked into a little slice of Paris. From the decor to the French waiter, to the authentic food, we were incredibly satisfied. We had the pate plate which was phenomenal, a frisee salad that was one of their specials (also delicious), and the escargot (which was tasty, but could have done without the potatoe cup surrounding it, in my opinion). Then we shared the filet mignon, which was perfect. We had wine pairings by the glass, suggested by the waiter, for 3 courses and all were excellent. Oh and the floating pastry dessert was amazing!!! We spent about $160 before tip. Highly recommend this spot if you're into all things French!
We went to L'Ardoise for date night and it was a lovely evening. Cozy and intimate inside with great decor and a manageable noise level. The food was good, he had the bacon wrapped scallops (a special I believe) and I had the filet mignon. The waitstaff were attentive and could read the table well so there wasn't any unnecessary interruptions to our meal. Only complaint was the wait, we had a reservation for 7:30 but we weren't seated until 7:50. It's not unexpected because of how small the restaurant is and the pace of the meal. When we were seated the host was very gracious and made us feel right at home, plus we stayed for at least two hours so I can see why our table was delayed at 7:30. All and all a great ambiance and good food, maybe not worth the price for every day dining but a great change of pace and comfortable evening.
This is probably our 5th time coming here since moving to the City, and L'Ardoise NEVER disappoints. This is a great restaurant for authentic French cuisine - if you're looking for one. There's a lot in the City, but highly recommend coming here first. They pretty much set the standard in cuisine and in service. For this reservation, we went on NYE to ring in the 2018 - and had a great time! Highly recommend - huge wine list, great cocktails, and wonderful staff!!
My French husband gave it accolades. He appreciated the authentic food and flavors. This will be our go-to French bistro henceforth. Great neighborhood location. Keep in mind, it is not white tablecloth, but it would be, in his words, the kind of real bistro French people would go to for a nice meal in France—it had all the classics and everything was on point. Thank you, L’Ardoise. À bientôt!
This is my second visit to L'Ardoise; this time, i went with my partner to kick off our anniversary weekend. I wanted to take him somewhere sophisticated with memorably delicious food. L'Ardoise impressed him the way it does me--the food is exquisitely prepared and presented, and delivers on every hope of fine food you had on walking in the door. The service is flawlessly graceful, with the entire team of servers working in concert, with polish and style. The ambience is vibrant, relaxed and has the slightly crowded feel of eating in a restaurant in France.
The lamb and fish come with our hearty thumbs up!
